Not So Nice Colored Girls: A View Of Tracey Moffatt’S Nice Coloured Girls, Caroline Vercoe

Nice Coloured Girls is Tracey Moffatt’s first film. Produced in 1987, this seventeen-minute film describes a tradition that has been passed down from her grandmother’s and great-grandmother’s generation—that of “picking up Captain.” Moffatt explains “since colonisation ‘picking up Captain’ has been a way for Aboriginal women to survive off white men.” Rather than creating new and empowered Aboriginal heroines for the 1990s, Moffatt chooses to site her characters within a colonial continuum. This article is part one of two of an analysis of the Jean Baudrillard's essay, "A Conjuration of Imbeciles". This essay compares the idea of art as a metaphor for French politics and the “uselessness” of contemporary art. A sense of postmodernism is drawn from that comparison and relates to contemporary art shared on the World Wide Web. Inevitable messages and meaning found in art will change, but economics and distribution continues to ground the economy on a global scale. This dissertation conducts feminist narrative textual analysis of films by three independent women film-makers-of- color: Julie Dash, Mona Smith and Trinh T. Minh-ha. The research utilizes traditional cinematic narratological methods combined with a feminist perspective. Narratology is the structural/textual study of narrative organization, style and content. Feminism is a theoretical body of inquiry which lends implications of gender difference, power relationships, cinematic stereotypes, and cultural significance to textual analysis. Feminist inquiry contributes a social, cultural, ideological and historical perspective to the taxomony of a structuralist narrative methodology. The emergence of a new science paradigm has been identified. It is characteristically described as structuring an organic, holistic and ecological framework for understanding the nature of reality. The modern scientific paradigm with its characteristic underlying inorganic, reductive, and mechanistic vision of reality, discursively dominates Western societies' cultural sense-making with its attempts to unlock the 'mysteries' of nature. The radically different characteristics of the new paradigm science is linked to 'rising culture' articulated in the exploratory social change of alternative social movements. Garifuna tradition bearers, artists, and technicians collaborated with filmmakers Andrea E. Leland and Kathy Berger to produce The Garifuna Journey, a documentary focused on the story of resistance and continuity of culture. The National Garifuna Council of Belize also worked on the project with the goal of cultural retrieval, as little had been documented and collected for its own archives.

With direction from tradition bearers in Belize, video footage and audio taped oral histories were collected, transcribed, and returned to the Belize community. The documentary was produced from these materials, focused on the Garifuna experience in Belize.
