H. D. And Time, Cheryl Walker

From the introduction to the volume:

A Feminist Critic Responds To Recurring Student Questions About Dickinson, Cheryl Walker
A Feminist Critic Responds To Recurring Student Questions About Dickinson, Cheryl Walker
Scripps Faculty Publications and Research
Book abstract:
The life and the range of topics and tones of Emily Dickinson suit her to be included in such courses as American literature, Romanticism, realism, nineteenth-century culture, and women’s literary traditions. Her poetry poses numerous challenges for readers because of its compressed style, indeterminacy, and constant surprises; her biography fascinates students and critics alike.
This volume emphasizes instruction of Dickinson’s poetry at the undergraduate level. Like other volumes in the MLA’s Approaches to Teaching World Literature series, it is divided into two parts. The first, “Materials,” discusses editions of Dickinson’s poetry, aids to teaching, reference works, biographies, critical …
Minorities And Hiv Infection, Veneita Porter
Minorities And Hiv Infection, Veneita Porter
New England Journal of Public Policy
This article discusses a preliminary comparison of responses to AIDS in ethnic communities and their basis in previously established support systems. The importance of public policy and its connection to racism and cultural insensitivities are discussed as they relate to communities of color at risk. Particular attention is paid to problems of communication and to the ethics involving confidentiality.
Two Cheers For Pornography, Steven Sanders
Two Cheers For Pornography, Steven Sanders
Bridgewater Review
The existence of pornography from the earliest times and in virtually every culture attests to a remarkable universality and persistence. Of course, popularity is no proof of legitimacy. How, if at all, can pornography be justified? This question has no easy answer. Indeed, if one may judge from the controversy, consensus is far from being reached on the question of pornography. I shall suggest some things that can be said in favor of pornography, though I am by no means giving my unqualified endorsement - hence, only two cheers for pornography. Naturally, I expect some readers to disagree with me, …

The 1984 George Eliot Memorial Lecture: Love, Knowledge And Narration: George Eliot On Other Minds, Richard Freadman, D. Phil
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
'It was by loving them ... that he knew them; it was not by knowing them that he loved'1 - such was Henry James's legendary conclusion about Balzac and his characters. James's point was simple but important: Balzac was, in his view, able to invest his characters with a special freedom and opaqueness because he loved them as one might love another person. They didn't spring complete and transparent from a fictional blueprint. 2
James makes a similar point about Trollope, a writer in whom he elsewhere finds fault. If Trollope 'was a knowing psychologist, he was so by grace; …
George Eliot's Theory Of The Novel, Richard Freadman
George Eliot's Theory Of The Novel, Richard Freadman
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
By the time George Eliot began work on Scenes of Clerical Life late in 1856, she already had in mind a pretty clear idea of what a novel ought to be. Here her work for the Westminster Review and the Leader had been of great assistance, for it had enabled her to assess many contemporary novels as well as numerous works of historical, sociological, philosophical and topical interest. The 'theory' of the novel that resulted was not as comprehensive or integrated as the historic one formalised in Henry James's Prefaces fifty years later, and it clearly underwent alteration as George …
The 1985 George Eliot Memorial Lecture, Michael Bell
The 1985 George Eliot Memorial Lecture, Michael Bell
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
At the heart of George Eliot's fiction is an abiding concern for truth of feel i ng. The al truism of a Dorothea, as much as the egoism of a Rosamund, can lead to a disastrous failure in self-knowledge and in understanding of the world. Eliot, of course, was concerned with the outer worlds of nature, of society and of history, yet her approach is always through the emotional perceptions of specific individuals. Several of the great mid-Victorian novelists shared this belief that large social questions were to be approached through the issue of right feeling. Most notably Dickens sought …

A Methodology For The Study Of Children's Environmental Knowledge In Other Cultures, Cindi Katz
A Methodology For The Study Of Children's Environmental Knowledge In Other Cultures, Cindi Katz
Publications and Research
This paper presents a methodology which I used to study the content and acquisition of children's environmental knowledge as central to the social reproduction of a rural agricultural economy in the Sudan. My approach was forged drawing on methods of geography, linguistics and anthropology to provide information on (1) how children learn to interact productively with their environment, (2) the nature of their interactions and (3) their knowledge of environmental processes and resources. In this paper I will describe first the methodology adopted including participant observation, ethnosemantic interviews, child-led walks, environmental modeling and "geo-dramas". I will then discuss its use …

The Function Of Self-Consciousness In John Barth's Chimera, Marilyn Edelstein
The Function Of Self-Consciousness In John Barth's Chimera, Marilyn Edelstein
English
Much recent American fiction has become increasingly self-conscious, displaying an awareness of itself as fiction, as artifice that diminishes the role of a central human consciousness or self in the fiction. The fictional process is in the foreground of much contemporary fiction where the narrative human presence once was. Yet, both fictional process and human presence serve similar structural functions within the text, which suggests that the creation of a fiction resembles the creation of a human self, real or imaginary. The provisional reality of self-conscious fiction is like the provisional reality of the "post-modern" self, prone to self-questioning, constituted …

Nwsa As Metaphor For The United States, Dearbhal Nicharthaigh
Nwsa As Metaphor For The United States, Dearbhal Nicharthaigh
Women's Studies Quarterly
The Convention at Storrs was not only my first experience of the NWSA in action but also my first experience of the United States. Having followed Storrs with trips to women's studies centers in New York, Washington, and Boston, I found two facts emerging:
1. There are three estates of persons in the United States: taxi drivers, hotel workers, and feminists. This last is by far the largest of the three.
2. There are very few men in America.
So much for cross-cultural perspectives!
In Irish society there is little racial diversity, though much latent racism. "Otherness" is defined more …
Teaching The Feminist Minority, Barbara Hillyer Davis
Teaching The Feminist Minority, Barbara Hillyer Davis
Women's Studies Quarterly
In women's studies conferences during the past few years, I have heard many descriptions of pedagogical approaches to specific student groups—working women, displaced homemakers, business majors, and so on. I admire and learn from these presentations and at the same time I am uneasy. For some reason my classes are never like those described. The longer I teach them, the less homogeneous they seem. I am working out my role as a women's studies teacher in a university in which—as in most others, I suspect—no class consists of just working-class women, just reentry women, just Native American women. It is …
Mothers And Daughters, Marianne Hirsch
Mothers And Daughters, Marianne Hirsch
Dartmouth Scholarship
In 1976 Adrienne Rich alerted us to the silence that has surrounded the most formative relationship in the life of every woman, the relationship between daughter and mother: "The cathexis between mother and daughter-essential, distorted, misused-is the great unwritten story. Probably there is nothing in human nature more resonant with charges than the flow of energy between two biologically alike bodies, one of which has lain in amniotic bliss inside the other, one of which has labored to give birth to the other."1 Since Rich demonstrated the absence of the mother-daughter relationship from theology, art, sociology, and psychoanalysis, and its …

Women Mathematicians: A Bibliography, Karen D. Rappaport
Women Mathematicians: A Bibliography, Karen D. Rappaport
Women's Studies Quarterly
Although long ignored or unrecognized, there have been several notable women in the history of mathematics. That the list is not long is due to the barriers presented to women trying to study mathematics. Those who were able to learn the subject encountered many more difficulties in their attempts to apply their knowledge. Yet in spite of these difficulties there were women who, because of circumstances, force of will, and/or brilliance, were able to achieve some recognition.

Closeup: Women's Studies Department At San Diego, Marilyn J. Boxer
Women's Studies Quarterly
Despite hazards both external and internal, the Women's Studies Program at San Diego State University (SDSU) has now survived eight years, has been strengthened in the process, and has moved in new directions. Designated a "program" in 1970, it is in fact a functioning "department," thanks to two successive supportive deans.
Funded initially by the SDSU Foundation in a period of militant feminism, in 1974 Women's Studies was assimilated into the administrative structure of the College of Arts and Letters. In the California State University system, funding for academic programs is determined almost exclusively by student enrollment. Departmental status for …
