El Dialecto En Las Primeras Novelas De Geroge Eliot: Grafia Y Vocalismo, Maria Fuencisla Garcia-Bermejo Giner
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
This is an examination of Scenes o/Clerical Life, Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss and Silas Marner from the point of view of the linguist. The author points to these novels as repositories of examples of dialect speech of the Midlands in the first part of the nineteenth century. That George Eliot was interested in language and languages, and that she had a passion for getting local detail right makes it unthinkable, according to the author, that her use of dialect in these novels could be anything other than authentic. The examples of dialect speech by characters in these …
Zami: A Portrait Of An Artist As A Black Lesbian, Barbara Dibernard
Zami: A Portrait Of An Artist As A Black Lesbian, Barbara Dibernard
Department of English: Faculty Publications
As feminist critics, we cannot continue to ignore differences in race, sexuality, and class when we write about women; we should heed Adrienne Rich's critique of her own earlier work, that she will never again write of the "faceless, raceless, classless category of 'all women.'" Aware that my work will be partial and limited, I would like to explore Audre Lorde's Zami as a portrait of an artist as a black lesbian. In doing so, I hope to suggest areas where we must open up our conception of the female Kunstlerroman so that we are taking account of Lorde's black …

"But Where Shall Understanding Be Found?" Searching For Sophia, Personified Wisdom, Kathleen Damiani
"But Where Shall Understanding Be Found?" Searching For Sophia, Personified Wisdom, Kathleen Damiani
Institute for the Humanities Theses
The thesis examines the image of Sophia, divine feminine wisdom, from the point of view of -archetypal psychology. The paper describes the emergence of Sophia in the Old Testament against the background of the development of monotheism in Judaism. Modern scholarship defines Sophia in religious terms, thus restricting her meaning to the limits imposed by the Judaeo-Christian concept of God. When the "problem" of Sophia is removed from the language of theology, however, and re-examined from the perspective of archetypal psychology, new meanings emerge. The position taken is that Sophia is an archetypal image which personifies the capacity of reflection …
Feminist Fiction And The Uses Of Memory, Gayle Greene
Feminist Fiction And The Uses Of Memory, Gayle Greene
Scripps Faculty Publications and Research
All writers are concerned with memory, since all writing is a remembrance of things past; all writers draw on the past, mine it as a quarry. Memory is especially important to anyone who cares about change, for forgetting dooms us to repetition;and it is of particular importance to feminists.
Phonetic Key To The Non-Standard Othography In The Novels Of George Eliot, Maira F. Garcia-Bermejo Giner
Phonetic Key To The Non-Standard Othography In The Novels Of George Eliot, Maira F. Garcia-Bermejo Giner
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
Any writer attempting to represent graphically variant pronunciations is faced with the double problem of being accurate as regards the pronunciation he has in mind and of choosing a spelling easily identifiable with the standard word. As a rule, he will keep most of the normal spelling and alter only the orthography of the syllable pronounced in a different way. The results of this operation should enable the reader to interpret the variant spelling quickly and, at the same time, give him a good idea about how that word sounds in dialect speech. It is not always easy to interpret …
Review Of George Eliot (Marian Evans): A Literary Life, Kerry Mcsweeney
Review Of George Eliot (Marian Evans): A Literary Life, Kerry Mcsweeney
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
Many publishers run series of 'introductions' to English literature - handy roll-calls of the canon, beginning with Chaucer and ending with Virginia Woolf or thereabouts - and inevitably George Eliot has to be there. One is, of course, glad for the small army of academics for whom gainful employment is thus provided, but the question naturally arises whether so many books covering the same ground serve any useful purpose.
In Professor McSweeney's case the answer is yes. His book is rewarding because he is sufficiently master of his subject to make it his own. He forms his own judgements, chooses …

Virginia Woolf & Postmodernism: Literature In Quest & Question Of Itself, Pamela L. Caughie
Virginia Woolf & Postmodernism: Literature In Quest & Question Of Itself, Pamela L. Caughie
English: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Virginia Woolf and Postmodernism argues not that Virginia Woolf is a postmodernist but that postmodern assumptions about art can account for her narrative innovations and feminist politics better than conventional modernist and feminist approaches to her works. In rethinking many of the prominent aesthetic and critical positions of her day, Woolf anticipated many postmodernist tenets. This book helps us to understand how and why she came to hold such views, and how we might change our reading of Woolf and narrative literature in turn.
Pamela Caughie brings together pragmatism and postmodern theory to move critical inquiry, particularly feminist criticism and …

Feminist Literary Criticism And The Author, Cheryl Walker
Feminist Literary Criticism And The Author, Cheryl Walker
Scripps Faculty Publications and Research
In the course of this essay I wish to reopen the (never fully closed) question of whether it is advisable to speak of the author, or of what Foucault calls "the author function," when querying a text, and I wish to reopen it precisely at the site where feminist criticism and post-structuralism are presently engaged in dialogue. Here in particular we might expect that reasons for rejecting author erasure would appear. However, theoretically informed feminist critics have recently found themselves tempted to agree with Barthes, Foucault, and the Edward Said of Beginnings that the authorial presence is best set aside …

Challenging Law, Establishing Differences: The Future Of Feminist Legal Scholarship, Martha Albertson Fineman
Challenging Law, Establishing Differences: The Future Of Feminist Legal Scholarship, Martha Albertson Fineman
Faculty Articles
I begin with my version of the ideally antagonistic interaction of feminist theory with the law. I locate my discussion between the extremes of grand theory and unique experience. I consider the central, pressing task of feminist theory to be challenging existing law and legal doctrines through the articulation and establishment of a theory of difference. In this essay I divide my discussion of the theory of difference into two sections. The first section concerns the theoretical and political necessity of establishing the differences between men and women. Articulation of the extent of this manifestation of difference illustrates that the …
