Invited Response To James J. Kilpatrick’S “And Some Are More Equal Than Others”, Mary Jo Deegan Jan 1976

Invited Response To James J. Kilpatrick’S “And Some Are More Equal Than Others”, Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

It is difficult to take Mr. Kilpatrick's column seriously. Not only is it written in a light-hearted vein, like many remarks written on minority groups and women, but also it takes an illogical and indefensible position. Somehow, I gather, the reader is supposed to feel that women should not be in half of the illustrations relating to society. In "reality" they are 51% of the population, so perhaps Mr. Kilpatrick is referring to a different reality than the one where women live. It would be interesting to know where this" reality" exists. In an additionally inexpicable manner there is supposed …

Dimensions Of The Ideal Family As Perceived By Adolescents, Lily Hok-Neo Wong

Dissertations

Problem

The purpose of this study was to Identify the types of family concept held by different groups of adolescents in thirteen selected high schools in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. Could the adolescents' concepts of the ideal family be described in terms of a number of factors? If there were basic factors, how would they compare with those previously identified by van der Veen in his study of disturbed adolescents? Were there differences in the ideal family concept when the adolescents were compared according to grade in school, church membership, sex, race, residential location, and number of parents? With the …

Social Research On Housing In The United States: Directions And Themes, Shirley S. Angrist Nov 1975

Social Research On Housing In The United States: Directions And Themes, Shirley S. Angrist

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

I shall present a selective overview of recent themes and directions in social research on housing in the U.S. I narrowed the topic by focusing on research centering on the family and on neighborhood. These topics offer ways to concentrate on "social" research and to narrow a rather broad topic.

My meaning of "social" research encompasses work not only by sociologists. It also includes the separate or collaborative work of other disciplines, especially psychology, anthropology, social psychology, architecture and urban planning. Research on housing has from its Post-World War II flowering been an interdisciplinary enterprise. And it continues to be …

Therapists Or Helpers? Notes On A Youth-Type Free Clinic, Michael W. Agopian, Robert W. Dellinger, Gilbert Geis Jul 1975

Therapists Or Helpers? Notes On A Youth-Type Free Clinic, Michael W. Agopian, Robert W. Dellinger, Gilbert Geis

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper builds upon a helpful typology of free clinics that divides then into four major kinds - the street, neighborhood, youth, and sponsored. While the typology tends to weave among characteristics of clientele, locale, and source of support in setting up its units, it nonetheless has the advantage of being based on an empirical assessment of the major forms of clinic operations through the country. Youth clinics - the type that particularly concerns us here - are defined as "generally organized by adults, service clubs, or official boards... because of their concern about drug use among high school students." …

Role Exits Among The Aged, Nancy Whitelaw Mancini Jun 1975

Role Exits Among The Aged, Nancy Whitelaw Mancini

Dissertations and Theses

The concept of role exit presented by Zena Smith Blau in her book, Old Age in a Changing Society, refers to the ongoing process of relinquishing previously enacted social roles; a process which is part of everyday life for men and women of all ages. However, Blau argues that role exits in later life are different from those in earlier stages of the life cycle because they tend to be terminal and involuntary. These factors, according to Blau, cause role exits in old age to negatively influence the individual's overall satisfaction with life.

This thesis examines the concept of …

Factors Affecting Consumers' Utilization Of Unit Pricing, Maurine Bingham May 1975

Factors Affecting Consumers' Utilization Of Unit Pricing, Maurine Bingham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Characteristics of consumers who used unit pricing were compared to consumers who did not use unit pricing. A numerical rating was developed to aid the researcher in classifying consumers into two extreme groups, "usually" and "seldom." The sample consisted of 50 shoppers who usually and 50 shoppers who seldom used unit pricing. Data was collected at a local supermarket where unit pricing is provided.

Of the variables tested, annual family income was not significant (.861)r number of individuals shopped for was relatively significant (.283)r and age of consumer (.028), occupation of consumer (.067), employment pattern of consumer (.031), education of …

Leave-Taking Behavior Between Preschool Children And Their Parents, Elizabeth Y. Aoki May 1975

Leave-Taking Behavior Between Preschool Children And Their Parents, Elizabeth Y. Aoki

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Behavior of 84 parent-child dyads engaged in separation in preschool settings are presented. A factor analysis and correlation matrix revealed patterns of child-parent-teacher interaction, child-parent tactile-affiliative behavior, and child dependency-attachment behavior. The main pattern showed high parent-teacher gazing, smiling, and approaching interaction and high teacher smiling and gazing activity toward the child. A teacher-mediator theory in which the teacher's presence is important as an anxiety-lessening factor in child-parent leave-taking behavior is suggested and discussed to both interpret the findings and for further leave-taking research.

Comparisons Of Draw-A-Child Test Among Preschool Children, Margaret Prather Ezell May 1975

Comparisons Of Draw-A-Child Test Among Preschool Children, Margaret Prather Ezell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

McCarthy's Draw-A-Child test was administered to 20 lower class and 20 middle class four-year-old children matched for age and sex. The purpose of the test was to find if socioeconomic class and sex differences effected the child's ability to draw a same sex figure. Analysis of results supported the theory that girls do better than boys. Analysis of socioeconomic differences suggests that lower-class children do not have the ability to draw as well as middle class children but the difference is not significant at the .05 level. It was concluded that the McCarthy Draw-A-Child test measures the general drawing abilities …

The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Responses Of Others During A Marital Crisis, Kathryn Ann Farr Feb 1975

The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Responses Of Others During A Marital Crisis, Kathryn Ann Farr

Dissertations and Theses

Symbolic interaction theory indicates that an individual's self-concept is related to the way in which the individual perceives others as responding to him/her. Although this theory is widely accepted in social psychology, it has been given little empirical attention. In this study a typological model was developed in an empirical examination of the relationship between self-concept and responses of others during marital crisis. Self-concept was defined as the organization of qualities (roles, social-psychological feelings) that an individual assigns to himself/herself. Kind of qualities were described, and social-psychological feelings about self were examined on a positive to negative continuum. Responses of …

The Influence Of Economic And Non-Economic Factors On Decisions To Limit Family Size By Wives' Educational Level In Huntington, West Virginia, Sylvia Lutz Mcroberts Jan 1975

The Influence Of Economic And Non-Economic Factors On Decisions To Limit Family Size By Wives' Educational Level In Huntington, West Virginia, Sylvia Lutz Mcroberts

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The birth rate in the United States has been declining over the past years from a peak reached in 1957. It is apparent that during the past twenty years increasing numbers of couples have made decisions to limit family size; moreover, the decisions could be easily and effectively implemented with use of modern contraceptive methods. Tubal ligations and vasecetomy have further served to implement decisions to end fertility permanently for millions of couples. In recent years, legal abortion has extended the decision period beyond the point of conception.

Socialization Of Children, Linda Davis Jan 1975

Socialization Of Children, Linda Davis

Nebraska Anthropologist

The children of a culture represent its greatest asset and responsibility. They insure the survival of a culture if its members can accomplish the formidable task of socialization. Americans are acutely aware of this responsibility. This concern is reflected in the tremendous amount of literature about children. For this reason, I used a familiar type of American literature, the comic strip, for an analysis of socialization in the United States. I chose to study "Dennis the Menace" and "Peanuts" because they deal specifically with children from a white, middle class neighborhood.

Socialization, as defined by Hartley and Hartley (In HSU …

A Descriptive Study Regarding Perceptions Of Sex Roles In Cooperative Households, Emily Fultz, Billie Huntwork Jan 1975

A Descriptive Study Regarding Perceptions Of Sex Roles In Cooperative Households, Emily Fultz, Billie Huntwork

Dissertations and Theses

The roles of men and women are among the many elements of contemporary American society which are in a process of rapid and sometimes disruptive change. The more or less traditional ways in which men and women have viewed themselves and each other are being openly challenged by a number of significant factors. Although there have always been those exceptional persons who questioned the inevitability of seemingly given role differentiation, today's social climate makes such questioning more common and acceptable.

A few specific factors may be mentioned as being particular interest. With modern communication and mobility, the options for varied …

Maturity Of Adolescent Unwed Mothers, Sarah L. Claiborne Dec 1974

Maturity Of Adolescent Unwed Mothers, Sarah L. Claiborne

Dissertations and Theses

Adolescence traditionally has been recognized and accepted as a period of exploration of an occasional rebellion against the adult world. Explorations are viewed by behavioral scientists as a quest for identity expansion, and as such, a necessary phase for attaining maturity. Several tasks have been identified which each adolescent must complete if he is to reach maturity. For the present these tasks can be summarized as character formation, attainment of sexual identity, establishment of mature relationships and emancipation from parental control.

Society's attitude towards the rebellion and exploitation of youth is mixed. This confusion seems related to a general breakdown …

A Holistic Perspective On Child Abuse And Its Prevention, David G. Gil Dec 1974

A Holistic Perspective On Child Abuse And Its Prevention, David G. Gil

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In recent decades, child abuse has come to be considered a social problem of significant scope and has, therefore, attracted intense public and scholarly interest. Yet, in spite of efforts by scholars, professionals, government agencies, concerned individuals and organizations, and the media of public communications, misconceptions prevail concerning the nature, sources, and dynamics of this destructive phenomenon and concerning effective approaches to its primary prevention. Such conceptual shortcomings, and a related persistent failure to design effective policies and programs for the primary prevention of child abuse, seem to be due to a number of obstacles.

Marriage In An Age Of Possibility: Joseph Epstein's Divorced In America, William I. Fine Oct 1974

Marriage In An Age Of Possibility: Joseph Epstein's Divorced In America, William I. Fine

IUSTITIA

Ever since the William Loud family first exhibited their marital difficulties on the Public Broadcasting Service, there has been a new direction in the popular literature on American divorce. In the past, the study of marital breakdown relied heavily on a foundation of case studies and empirical data. As society became more complex and variable, permutations from the basic theories became inextricably confused. Often the validity of a research technique would become a greater point of controversy than the results achieved. The product was a contradictory and prematurely dated body of knowledge in which no conclusive evidence could be assembled …

Protective Services: Coercive Social Control Or Mutual Liberation, Alfred J. Fortin Sep 1974

Protective Services: Coercive Social Control Or Mutual Liberation, Alfred J. Fortin

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

The area of protective services for children has always been a difficult one for social work. Protective casework has, and is now, both praised and condemned simultaneously from different elements of the community. The stakes in the protective field are usually high and players are subject to various episodes of the "emotional plague" as Wilhelm Reich would have called it. People in protective work exercise their role as worker in a variety of ways and these 'styles' range from being police-like and oppressive to radical and promoting social change. It is characteristic of this work …

Social Work Practice And The Social Context, Jeffry Galper Jul 1974

Social Work Practice And The Social Context, Jeffry Galper

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Any effort to define appropriate tasks and directions for social work practice must necessarily come to grips with some analysis of the particular social-political-historical situation within which that practice is being formulated. Too often it seems as though we attempt to define practice abstracted from the particular period in which that practice takes place. It is true, on the one hand, that it is important to develop generic principles of practice. Similarly, it is true that the definition of the social work task is not a matter left solely to the discretion of the profession. In fact, the profession may …

Evaluating A Pilot Social Service Project For Widows: A Chronicle Of Research Problems, S. Roxanne Hiltz Jul 1974

Evaluating A Pilot Social Service Project For Widows: A Chronicle Of Research Problems, S. Roxanne Hiltz

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The decade of the 70's has seen the appearance of a number of publications in the area of "evaluation research", the effort to systematically apply social science research methods to the evaluation of action programs set up for the purpose of helping to solve social problems. Evaluation research is thus one area in which social scientists can be of direct aid in setting public policy about social welfare services.

An excellent primer on the problems that are likely to arise in the course of an evaluation effort and the "conventional wisdom" that has been developed thus far is Carol Weiss' …

Head Start And School Readiness, Robert Bruce Turner May 1974

Head Start And School Readiness, Robert Bruce Turner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effect of compensatory education was studied as it influences school readiness in preschool children. The research was conducted in the Logan and Providence areas of Cache County, Utah, with 44 children who had completed the kindergarten year of school. Twenty-two of the children had participated in the compensatory educational experience of Head Start prior to their kindergarten experience. It was found that there was not a significant difference between the Head Start children and their neighbors in terms of their performance on the Boehm Test of Basic Concepts. Therefore, in terms of school preparedness, the Head Start children seem …

Effects Of An Instructional Program On Concept Attainment Of Middle-Class Pre-Kindergarten Children, Joan Spencer Ross

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The objective of this study was to determine if a highly structured instructional program, as a supplement to a more traditional pre-school program would have an effect on the concept attainment of pre-school children. Two groups of eighteen pre-school children, enrolled in the Child Development Laboratory at Utah State University comprised the study sample.

The eighteen children in the experimental group received the instructional program, in addition to the Child Development Laboratory school experience. Standardized pre and post tests were administered to both the experimental and control groups. A standardized test, The Boehm Test of Basic Concepts, was utilized.

Marriage Role Expectations And Religiosity, Gilbert Craig Orme May 1974

Marriage Role Expectations And Religiosity, Gilbert Craig Orme

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this paper was to determine the effect, if any, of religiosity on marriage role expectations. During the past years, the young person's marriage role expectations have been undergoing a gradual change from traditional type roles to more equalitarian-partnership type roles, Religiosity has been found to have a differing effect on the values of people. It was hypothesized that the more religious a person was, the more traditional he would be in his marriage role expectations. Religiosity was determined using a questionnaire developed by Faulkner and De Jong, Marriage role expectations were determined by using an instrument developed …
