The Belt and Road Initiative has played an important role in promoting the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind and actively integrated into the global governance system over the past decade. At the same time, through scientific and technological cooperation, it has also significantly impacted domestic regional development. The Tibetan Plateau, known as the “Third Pole” of the Earth, is not only an important internationalized region but also a crucial component of the Belt and Road Initiative, offering opportunities to establish a South Asian land corridor. This study analyzes and summarizes the role of scientific and …

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The Belt and Road countries and regions have complicated geological environment and controlled by monsoon climate, which is easy to cause a variety of natural disasters and lead to serious harm. The natural disasters have become an important factor hindering the green development to the Belt and Road countries and regions. At the same time, most of the Belt and Road countries and regions are developing countries and regions, with lower capacity for disaster prevention and reduction. It is difficult for science and technology as well as institutional mechanisms to meet the needs of the implementation of the Belt and …

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Scientific and technological talents are critical resources to China and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Although China is the most favorable destination country for overseas students in Asia, it is facing increasing global competition for talents, especially from the developed countries that have introduced policies to attract international students and scientific and technological innovation talents, China highly needs to figure out how to attract more high-quality foreign students and talents, and how to cultivate more innovation talents to serve the Belt and Road development. This study first evaluates science and education rankings of the Belt and Road countries and …

Structured Decision-Making Framework For Managing Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms In New York State Parks, Jennifer Graham
Structured Decision-Making Framework For Managing Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms In New York State Parks, Jennifer Graham
Sustainability Seminar Series
Cyanobacteria increasingly are a global water-quality concern because of the potential for these organisms to develop harmful blooms that affect ecologic, economic, and public health. Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) can lead to a decrease in water quality and affect many of the recreational and ecological benefits of parks that include lakes. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) is a state agency within the New York State Executive Department charged with the operation of state parks and historic sites. Many New York State parks include lakes or other freshwater bodies, which can be susceptible …
The Influence Of Polystyrene Microplastics On Juvenile Steelhead Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Kaitlyn Marie Baker
The Influence Of Polystyrene Microplastics On Juvenile Steelhead Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Kaitlyn Marie Baker
Dissertations and Theses
Mass production of plastic within the past decade has led to over 100 billion tons of plastics being added to the world’s oceans through rivers and effluent disposal and decomposition. For marine environments, the sudden and constant growth of microplastics (plastics 1 µm to 5 mm in diameter), is of particular concern to top-predatory fish such as steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), who passively or actively uptake microplastics while consuming prey. Previous research has demonstrated clear detrimental impacts of microplastic accumulation in bivalves, seabirds, and zebrafish, including decreased diet, reproduction rates, and metabolism, as well as increased rates of …
Community Adaptations To Wildfire Risk In Central Oregon, Usa: An Empirical Study Of Inclusionary Practices In Collaborative Wildfire Risk Mitigation, Liam Resener
Dissertations and Theses
Adverse impacts of wildfire in Western North America have become increasingly present through the 21st century, driven by landscape changes imposed by colonists in the 19th and 20th centuries. Community adaptations to wildfire will be necessary through the 21st century to restore landscapes and protect the safety and livelihoods of people who live in at-risk areas. Wildfire risk extends across countless environmental and social systems, and individuals have competing ideas about what constitutes that risk and how to best adapt to it. As resources are being allocated to community adaptations, important questions emerge about the values …
Inner Workings Of Milankovitch Cycles, Linda A. Hinnov
Inner Workings Of Milankovitch Cycles, Linda A. Hinnov
Sustainability Seminar Series
Milankovitch cycles are incoming solar radiation (insolation) cycles forced by variations in Earth’s orbital eccentricity, axial obliquity and precession, and are recorded on Earth in cyclostratigraphy. Insolation undergoes major daily and annual cycles with weak modulation from the obliquity variation. Thresholds in the Earth’s climate response to insolation generate the strong precession signals commonly observed in cyclostratigraphy. Dr. Hinnov will demonstrate these and other features using the insolation equation, and will discuss the manifestation of these features in key cyclostratigraphic sections.
Exploring Nonprofit Views On Water Management And Conservation Strategies, Jillian Marie Farley
Exploring Nonprofit Views On Water Management And Conservation Strategies, Jillian Marie Farley
Dissertations and Theses
Valuing water resources presents a multitude of methodological and theoretical challenges, including economics, biodiversity, and cultural significance. Information is not readily available on the individuals working every day on water resource management and how they navigate such a complex topic. This project is designed to help all parties better understand the opinions of individuals working for nonprofit organizations and Watershed Councils in the State of Oregon about current methods of water resource conservation. The results reflect respondents’ personal views on the process and practices of valuing water and are designed to prompt deeper discussions between the organizations, communities, and policymakers. …

Microplastics In Water, Their Effects On The Aquatic Ecosystem And Human Public Health, And The Proposed Solutions, Mohanad Abouserie
The Undergraduate Research Journal
We could be swallowing a credit card's weight in plastic every week. Microplastic water pollution is becoming a threat to both humans and aquatic creatures. In this research, microplastic water contamination is discussed, and divergent solutions are proposed. This paper attempts to investigate the causes and effects of such pollution and analyze the current solutions for this issue. The adopted research method is secondary research, where several studies are explored and analyzed. This study explains numerous causes for this issue like cosmetics, cleaning products, factories, and sewage. Consequently, this contamination can negatively impact the organs and metabolisms of the living …

Hydrothermal Carbonization Of Biomass Wastes: Sustainability And Geochemistry, Michael A. Kruge, Teresa A. Centeno, Alvaro Amado-Fierro, José Manuel González-Lafuente, Ruben Forjan-Castro, José Luis Gallego
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Introduction. To reduce the stream of solid waste going to landfills, innovative means for beneficial use are essential. The diversity and volume of organic wastes pose singular problems and opportunities for recovery and circularity. Common processes for organics include conversion to biofuels and carbonization to biochar, typically done by torrefaction (dry pyrolysis). Research on biochar explores its potential as pollutant adsorbent, agricultural or polluted soil amendment, biofuel (directly or as feedstock), and for carbon sequestration (Ighalo et al., 2022; Cavali et al., 2023). Recently, other processes at lower temperatures such as hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) offer new possibilities (Seshadri et al., …
