Idaho River Systems Management Study Wetlands Report, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamations
Natural Resources-Planning, Management, and Conservation
The Bureau of Reclamation is cooperating with the Idaho Department of Water Resources and others in the formulation of a comprehensive water plan for the conservation, development, management, and use of waters within the state's river basins. The impact that wetlands may have on the use of water in the state is a major consideration.
This report identifies opportunities that exist for private citizens, corporations, government agencies, and others to work together to slow the rate of wetland loss and to improve the quality of remaining wetlands. To work together effectively, these groups must reach an understanding of what comprises …

Post-Shearing Losses Of Sheep Following Cyclonic Rains, M. Holm Glass, R. Jacob
Post-Shearing Losses Of Sheep Following Cyclonic Rains, M. Holm Glass, R. Jacob
Animal production and livestock published reports
Sudden unpredicted rainfall during summer has caused high mortality rates in newly shorn sheep on at least two previous occasions. These occurred at Darkan, Western Australia, in 1982 (Buckman 1982) and at Kybylolite in the south-east of South Australia in 1960 (Geytenbeek 1982).
Geytenbeek (1982) reported an average mortality of 8.3%, which was highest for sheep within five days of shearing. The mortality declined for animals shorn more than seven days before the rain.
Buckman (1982) reported an average mortality of 27.9% which was highest within 12 days of shearing. The losses related directly to the amount of rain received. …
The Influence Of Redd Distribution And Microhabitat Availability On The Distribution And Abundance Of Young-Of-The-Year Trout In The Green River, Utah, Michael J. Buntjer
The Influence Of Redd Distribution And Microhabitat Availability On The Distribution And Abundance Of Young-Of-The-Year Trout In The Green River, Utah, Michael J. Buntjer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Redd distribution, redd density, and physical habitat were used to explain the distribution and abundance of young-of-the-year (YOY) brown trout (Salmo trutta) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in the Green River, Utah. The importance of variables at both a microhabitat and macrohabitat scale were assessed using stepwise regression analysis. Availability of cover (rock and vegetation) and proximity to spawning sites were the most important variables used to explain the distribution and abundance of YOY brown trout and rainbow trout. In addition, YOY brown trout and rainbow trout occupied specific microhabitats and showed patterns of use for …
A Survey Of Electronic Environmental Controllers, Richard S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, Larry W. Turner
A Survey Of Electronic Environmental Controllers, Richard S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, Larry W. Turner
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Sixteen commercially available electronic environmental controllers were evaluated. The units were classified according to enclosure type, analog versus microprocessor based control, power supply, sensors, alarms, control relays and triac output, interval timers, outside temperature feedback, and retail price. An assessment of these controllers indicated several critical limitations in the application of this technology.
The use of integrated controllers for animal production has the potential for substantial improvements in production efficiencies. If the limitations observed in the present controller technology, as represented by this sample, are addressed, industry acceptance of the technology can be accelerated. A uniform standard to address this …
Desert Bighorn Sheep And Riverboat Interactions In Cataract Canyon, Utah, Mark C. Stanger
Desert Bighorn Sheep And Riverboat Interactions In Cataract Canyon, Utah, Mark C. Stanger
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
I studied desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni) behavior and habitat use in response to boating activities during 1985. The percent of total observed time in attention behavior before the boating season, during the boating season, and while riverboats were< 0.8 km from bighorn sheep groups was 1, 1.4, and 12.2, respectively. Estimated energy expenditure did not significantly differ for high riverboat pressures (2 > 0.2) or seasonal comparisons (2 > 0.1). Habitat use significantly differed for proximity to the river, which was probably related to the summer use of the river for drinking. Moderate, minor, and no responses to passing riverboats were observed 3, 39, and 58%, respectively. Responses to riverboats did not significantly differ according to time of day (2 > 0.15) or …

Dynamic Multi-Species Animal Habitat Modeling With Forest Succession Models, Stephen A. Compton
Dynamic Multi-Species Animal Habitat Modeling With Forest Succession Models, Stephen A. Compton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research determines and demonstrates the ability to simulate dynamic multi-species animal habitat suitability with forest succession models. A literature review of dynamic animal habitat models is presented. The structure of an existing forest simulation model (MASS10) was modified from a basal area-based model to a volume-based model (DYNAM10). The forest model was calibrated using data from permanent-plot growth and vegetation samples collected by USDA Forest Service Forest Survey procedures. The theoretical growth parameters used to simulate stand development were validated. Predictions of DBH and height growth, as well as stand-level behavior, were verified. A subroutine, VEGDYN, was added to …
Soil Heterogeneity And Its Exploitation By Plants, Robert B. Jackson
Soil Heterogeneity And Its Exploitation By Plants, Robert B. Jackson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In this dissertation I first examine the ability of individual plants in the field to garner localized soil nutrients. I then measure actual soil variability around perennial plants and use various statistics to quantify the scale and degree of that variability.
Soil patches on opposite sides of Pseudoroegneria spicata tussocks were treated with distilled water or a nutrient solution containing N, P, or K in three field experiments. When P was augmented in the enriched soil patches, rates of P uptake increased significantly for roots from enriched patches compared with roots in control patches. Rates of ammonium and potassium uptake …
Microwave Treatment Of Hazardous Wastes : Feasibility Studies-Mass Balances, Liu Liu
Microwave Treatment Of Hazardous Wastes : Feasibility Studies-Mass Balances, Liu Liu
Theses
This laboratory has been developing processes for the remediation of soils contaminated with hazardous wastes using microwave treatment. The initial stage was to define situations in which microwave treatment could potentially have unique advantages, and to define the relevant physical chemical mechanisms. That having been accomplished, at the present stage, feasibility studies are being carried to determine whether or not on-site field testing is justified. To that end, mass balances on the processes are needed. In this study mass balance studies were carried out on the microwave assisted steam distillation of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and semi-volatile organics (SVOCs), respectively, …

In 1988 the United States Geological Survey published a radar image mosaic of an area roughly that of the Alliance. Nebraska 1° × 2° topographic map at the same scale, 1:250,000. Striking near-parallel valley trends in the vicinity of Chadron, Nebraska, may be related to jointing or possible faulting. Two sets, oriented approximately N30E and N28W, are obvious in the area east of Chadron. Sets south of Chadron on the Pine Ridge trend approximately N40E and N50W. On the Pine Ridge west of Fort Robinson in Sioux County some E-W and N-S features are also apparent. Other features that may …

John Muir Newsle spring, 1992 university of the pacific volume 2, number 2 ON EARLY YOSEMITE ARTISTS AND TOURISM Katherine M. Littell of Harvard University has published a short essay about early Yosemite artists entitled, "Chris Jorgensen and the Pioneer Artists of Yosemite." It appeared in the fall, 1990 issue of the Harvard Graduate Society Newsletter. Littell reports that nineteenth century artists were very much responsible for the political viability of Yosemite. The new Yosemite Grant needed tourism to be finacially stable. California had accepted administration of Yosemite in 1866 but was not given any funds by the federal government …

Influence Of Water Supply On Farm Productivity In The North-Eastern Wheatbelt, E J. Hauck
Influence Of Water Supply On Farm Productivity In The North-Eastern Wheatbelt, E J. Hauck
Resource management technical reports
In the area with reliable reticulated water supplies, average what yield, average wool production and average number of sheep per pastured hectare showed a positive correlation with annual rainfall in all but one year. By contrast, in the area served by on-farm water supplies only, average wheat yield and annual rainfall were strongly correlated, whereas average wool production and average number of sheep per pastured hectare showed a weaker correlation with annual rainfall. These correlations suggest tt on farms with a reliable water supply, livestock numbers have been adjusted annually to ensure optimum utilisation of available feed in all seasons.

Survey Of Mollusks Of The Platte River: Final Report, Patricia W. Freeman, Keith Perkins
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
A survey of the mollusks of the Platte River was carried out during the summers of 1990 and 1991. With the exception of the Big Bend Reach of the River in Dawson, Buffalo and Hall counties, no unionids (mussels) were found in the main channel of the river. We found 11 species of mussels along the river and 16 species of snails at 49 different sites from east to west across the state. We found the Asiatic clam, a known, non-native, pest species, for the first time in the state placing it several hundred miles west of the present eastern …

Effects Of Waterlogging On Crop And Pasture Production In The Upper Great Southern, Western Australia, J F. Wallace, G A. Wheaton, D J. Mcfarlane
Technical Bulletins
Separate estimates of the effect of waterlogging on cereal yields were made using rainfall and crop yield statistics, and remote sensing. Both methods showed that waterlogging costs tens of millions of dollars each year in lost crop production in the Upper Great Southern Statistical Division. The costs will be over $100 m in wet years. Losses in pasture production are likely to be of a similar magnitude, but are harder to quantify.
Responses Of The Adc Program To A Changing American Society, Bobby R. Acord
Responses Of The Adc Program To A Changing American Society, Bobby R. Acord
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 15th (1992)
Changes in the Animal Damage Control (ADC) program are reviewed relative to changes in American societal background and attitudes. Many of the program changes that occurred in the past were imposed on ADC in response to external factors, while more recent program changes have been and will continue to be more self-directed. Examples of ADC's proactive approach to dealing with critical issues are provided.

Field Evaluation Of Three Anticoagulant Rodenticides Against Mus Musculus Populations In Apartmental Buildings In New York City, Ranjan Advani
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 15th (1992)
Field efficacy studies using three anticoagulant rodenticides were conducted on House mice, Mus musculus under a variety of conditions in 35 apartment buildings scattered over four boroughs of New York metropolitan area. Percent control successes and relative efficacies of various rodenticides and their formulations were determined by recording pre and post control census for about four years. After four monthly treatments, the control success rate of bromadialone (0.005%, meal form) was highest (94.5%) followed by brodifacoum (0.005%, pellet form, 91.23%) and diphacinone (77.72%) in the wax cake formulation. However, build up of the residual mice population was faster in the …
Efficacy Of Methyl Anthranilate As A Bird Repellent On Cherries, Blueberries And Grapes, Leonard R. Askham
Efficacy Of Methyl Anthranilate As A Bird Repellent On Cherries, Blueberries And Grapes, Leonard R. Askham
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 15th (1992)
Anthranilitic acid derivatives, used as common food additives, have been explored as bird repellent agents for a number of years. Research in this study show that methyl anthranilate, when exposed to the UV spectrum of sunlight, readily dissipates within 64 hours. The addition of surfactants and extenders did not appreciably alter the degradation curve, nor did they lessen the phytotoxic properties of the chemical. Field trials under IR-4 guidance and support indicate that methyl anthranilate (MA) is an effective, biodegradable, nontoxic bird repellent. In formulation with a lipid molecular binding compound degradation of methyl anthranilate was extended from four to …
Exposure Of Persons To Phosphine Gas From Aluminum Phosphide Application To Rodent Burrows, Rex O. Baker
Exposure Of Persons To Phosphine Gas From Aluminum Phosphide Application To Rodent Burrows, Rex O. Baker
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 15th (1992)
An industrial hygiene study was performed monitoring levels of phosphine gas workers are exposed to when applying aluminum phosphide tablets to rodent burrows. Clothing and gloves were monitored for phosphine gas from residual dust. Air in the breathing zone was monitored with short and long term monitoring equipment. No levels of phosphine exceeding the legal permissible exposure limits (PEL) was detected and although residues were detected on clothing, the levels were usually quite low and dissipated in open air to undetectable levels within 12 to 17 hours in all but a few cases. Hand application was also compared to a …
Cougar Attacks On Humans: An Update And Some Further Reflections, Paul Beier
Cougar Attacks On Humans: An Update And Some Further Reflections, Paul Beier
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 15th (1992)
I examined historical records of unprovoked attacks by cougars on humans in the U.S. and Canada during 101 years (1890-1990). There were 9 attacks resulting in 10 human deaths and at least 44 nonfatal attacks. In a recent paper, I listed these attacks and discussed them in considerable detail (Beier 1991). Although extremely rare, attacks on humans have increased markedly in the last 2 decades, during which cougar numbers and human use of cougar habitats have increased. There is no substantial evidence that habituation underlies this increase in attacks. The data provide weak support for the notion that an attacking …
