Short-Run Subsidies And Long-Run Willingness To Pay: Learning And Anchoring In An Agricultural Experiment In Ethiopia, Solomon Balew, Erwin Bulte, Menale Kassie
Short-Run Subsidies And Long-Run Willingness To Pay: Learning And Anchoring In An Agricultural Experiment In Ethiopia, Solomon Balew, Erwin Bulte, Menale Kassie
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
We study how temporary provision of an agricultural innovation at zero cost affects long-run demand for that innovation. Our experimental design enables us to distinguish between an “anchoring effect” of subsidies and a “learning effect.” We document large and persistent anchoring and learning effects. For the innovation that we consider, an integrated pest management (IPM) package for Ethiopian smallholder farmers, the learning effect dominates the anchoring effect, so temporary subsidized provision promotes long-run technology diffusion.

This study develops a comprehensive system dynamics model to predict and manage African armyworm (Spodoptera exempta) outbreaks, a major threat to cereal crops across Africa. We applied system dynamics approache with its archetypes (causal loop diagram (CLD), reinforcing (R) and balancing (B)) to analyse the population dynamics of the pest. The VENSIM modelling platform (Ventana Systems Inc., DSS 8.2) was used to implement the models and carry out the simulations. The research integrates extensive data from 1980 to 2023, encompassing the African armyworm's life cycle stages, climatic variables, and intervention strategies, to simulate potential outbreak scenarios and evaluate the impacts …

Global terrestrial and ocean surface temperatures continue to reach record levels, resulting in heat waves, drought, and prolonged heat stress experienced by vegetation in many regions. In 2023-2024, coastal terrestrial ecosystems in Western Australia were particularly affected, experiencing their driest and hottest summer since observations began in the early 1900s. Banksia woodlands are a threatened ecological community in this region that are endangered by the cumulative impacts of climate change, clearing and changing groundwater regimes, the last of which is strongly influenced by the dual use of groundwater resources by the ecosystem and by the ∼2 million people in the …

Deep Learning Of The Particulate And Mineral-Associated Organic Carbon Fractions Using A Compositional Transform And Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy, Mingxi Zhang, Zefang Shen, Lewis Walden, Farid Sepanta, Zhongkui Luo, Lei Gao, Oscar Serrano, Raphael A. Viscarra Rossel
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
We need soil organic carbon (SOC) and the SOC fractions, the particulate and mineral-associated organic carbon (POC, MAOC), to understand SOC dynamics. They have implications for soil management, carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation. However, conventional laboratory measurements of the SOC fractions, which involve physical or chemical separations, are elaborate, time-consuming and expensive. Mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy combined with multivariate modelling can alleviate these limitations because the method can estimate SOC and its fractions rapidly, cost-effectively and accurately. Previous spectroscopic modelling has mostly ignored the compositional nature of the SOC fractions (i.e. SOC = ∑fractions), causing discrepancies in the estimation such …

Interactive Mapping Of Allergenic Urban Street Trees In Australia, Diman Krwanji, Anna J. Hopkins, Kristina Lemson, M. Hanson
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Tree pollen can be a persistent allergen for sensitised individuals, causing allergic rhinitis and asthmatic symptoms. Increased urbanisation results in larger populations living in cities and relying on urban greenspaces for recreation and associated ecosystem services, where the street landscapes are determined by urban planners. Urban forest strategies broadly divide planting choices based on biological functionality, climate resilience and environmental benefits but increasingly the associated physical and mental health impacts of urban vegetation are being considered. Here, we studied pollen allergenicity in four Australian cities by incorporating measures of allergenicity in existing street tree asset databases and visualising these using …

Widespread use of genetically engineered maize targeting the corn rootworm complex (Diabrotica species) has raised concerns about insect resistance. Twelve years of university field trial and farm survey data from ten United States Corn Belt states indicate that maize hybrids expressing toxins derived from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt maize) exhibited declining protection from rootworm feeding with increased planting while pest pressures simultaneously decreased. The analysis revealed a tendency to overplant Bt maize, leading to substantial economic losses; this was particularly striking in eastern Corn Belt states. Our findings highlight the need to go beyond the “tragedy of the …

The transition from a carbon-intensive economy to a carbon-neutral one has become a critical global objective to address climate change. This study examines the relationship between Low-Carbon Economic Development (LCED) and Geopolitical Risk (GPR) in China by focusing on the challenges and opportunities they present. We use a qualitative analysis to identify that rising GPR, exacerbated by market instability, resource allocation conflicts, and trade disputes, significantly hinders LCED progress. However, these geopolitical tensions also act as a catalyst for accelerating the development of renewable energy, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources, and fostering low-carbon technologies. Furthermore, LCED can ameliorate GPR …

Investigation Of Methane Content And Sorption Properties Of Lignite Deposits, Marcin Karbownik
Investigation Of Methane Content And Sorption Properties Of Lignite Deposits, Marcin Karbownik
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Methane is one of the main greenhouse gases (GHG) affecting climate change, and proper quantification of the amount of its emissions to the atmosphere is crucial. The basic parameter for determining the potential amounts of naturally occurring methane in coal for both hard coal and lignite is the methane content. Determination of the methane content of lignite for open-pit mines is not commonly used and required as there is no possibility of its accumulation in the mine workings, as is the case for underground hard coal mines. In this article, two research areas for open-pit lignite mines were analyzed in …

Perceived And Recorded Temperature In Aircraft Cabins During 143 Flights, Matthew Nicholls, Peter Vink
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
This essay reports on the perceived and recorded temperature in aircraft cabins during 143 flights. In each flight, passengers reported their experience. They recorded temperature and humidity after boarding and one hour later. The reports show that fewer than half of the passengers perceived the temperature as “good.” Most passengers (39%) perceived it as hot, and some (17%) perceived it as cold. Comparing the temperatures with guidelines shows that 18% of the recorded temperatures in the cabin were empirically too hot and 2% empirically too cold. The differences between passengers in what they perceive as a good temperature are large, …

Sea star wasting syndrome has affected numerous species of sea star, with populations of Pycnopodia helianthoides (Brandt, 1835) left most at risk. As their populations are struggling to recover, it is important to gain a better understanding of the impacts that the multiple stressors in their habitats can have on their populations. Contaminant stressors in particular are of increasing importance, because aquatic organisms can be exposed to a dynamic range of contaminants from nearby anthropogenic activity that may affect their future recovery efforts. This study is the first to quantify the effects of contaminant stressors on the larvae of P. …

Safety Distances For Fires In Underground Hard Rock Mines, Rickard Hansen
Safety Distances For Fires In Underground Hard Rock Mines, Rickard Hansen
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Preventing the ignition of combustibles in an underground mine will be one of the decisive actions affecting the risk to mining personnel during a fire. This study focuses on the application of safety distances in underground hard rock mines, where a safety distance will ensure that the incipient heat flux upon the fuel surface will not be sufficient for ignition. No earlier study has been conducted on safety distances in underground mines, and where data from earlier fire experiments and studies were applied. Safety distances were calculated using empirical expressions, accounting for influencing parameters. It was found that safety distances …

Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective and Methods The Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA; ca. 360‒254 Ma), the only period recording the transition from icehouse to greenhouse conditions throughout the geological history, can provide a deep-time perspective for glacier-environment-climate coevolution and future climate change. To gain a deep understanding of the potential relationship between the continental chemical weathering trends in low-latitude regions and the glacial cycles in the high-latitude Gondwana region from the Late Carboniferous to the Early Permian, this study investigated the mudstones of the Benxi-Taiyuan formations, Liujiang coalfield, North China Basin. Using multiple chemical weathering indices such as chemical index of alteration (CIA), …

Anisotropy In Non-Darcy Flow In Individual Rough-Walled Rock Fractures, Zhu Yinbin, Liao Zhen, Li Changdong, Liu Hongbin, Jiang Xihui
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective Investigating the flow behavior of fluids in individual rough-walled rock fractures is fundamental for fully understanding the seepage characteristics of fluids in rock fracture networks. Methods Rock fractures were artificially synthesized based on the fractal theory, and numerical simulations of seepage along these fractures were performed using the COMSOL Multiphysics software. Then, fracture specimens with the same geometric characteristics as numerical models of fractures were prepared using 3D printing technology. In combination with the self-designed equipment for seepage experiments, this study conducted seepage experiments on these fracture specimens under different injection flow rates to investigate the impacts of varying …

Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective To achieve safe and efficient hydraulic fracturing, it is necessary to conduct timely and accurate microseismic monitoring in the reservoir stimulation process. The purpose is to analyze and assess the fracturing effects. Methods Using a permanently deployed fiber-optic cable outside the casing of a coalbed methane (CBM) well, this study employed distributed optical fiber acoustic sensing (DAS)for full-borehole, wide-azimuth, and high-density real-time monitoring of microseismic events induced by the hydraulic fracturing of coal seams. Furthermore, this study proposed a novel method for localizing microseismic sources based on information about wave travel time and a source-constrained mapping algorithm. First, effective …

A Model Predictive Control Method For Directional Borehole Trajectories In Underground Coal Mines, Li Hao, Yao Ningping, Lu Chengda, Zhang Jinbao, Wei Hongchao, Wu Jiajun, Li Jinyu
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective It is challenging to control the borehole trajectories during directional drilling in complex strata in underground coal mines, resulting in significant deviations from the designed trajectories. Given this, this study proposed a method for tracking and controlling directional borehole trajectories based on model predictive control (MPC). Methods Focusing on the directional drilling process conducted using a screw drill, this study investigated the movement patterns of the directional screw drill by analyzing the characteristics of directional drilling in complex strata in underground coal mines. Based on the kinematic theory, this study developed a borehole trajectory extension model for sliding directional …
