Coal Geology & Exploration
The technique of staged fracturing horizontal wells in coal seam roof is effective for efficient extraction of coalbed methane (CBM) in broken soft and low-permeability coal seams. With the help of the major national science and technology projects of the 13th Five Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development, the efficient extraction technology of CBM by staged fracturing horizontal wells in coal seam roof was studied. By using theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, the fracture propagation patterns in different in-situ stress states were compared, and the influence of the angle between the horizontal well layout orientation and the minimum …

Production Characteristics Of Deep Coalbed Methane Gas Reservoirs In Daning-Jixian Block And Its Development Technology Countermeasures, Nie Zhihong, Shi Xiaosong, Sun Wei, Yan Xia, Huang Hongxing, Liu Ying, Feng Yanqing
Coal Geology & Exploration
The Ordos Basin is rich in deep coalbed methane resources with a depth of more than 2 000 m, which is an important coalbed methane exploration and development area. A number of tests on deep coalbed methane have been carried out in Daning-Jixian Block, and preliminary results have been achieved, but the main technology of scale-efficient development needs to be studied. On the basis of the analysis of experimental data, production data and fracture monitoring data, and by the evaluation of the characteristics, production performance and fracturing effect of deep coalbed methane reservoirs in Daning-Jixian Block, the production characteristics of …

Crop prices and energy prices can affect the water level in an aquifer? Absolutely, yes, because over time, they affect the amount withdrawn for irrigation. Our recent research confirms that effect and provides estimates of the size of the effect on the High Plains Aquifer (HPA). The HPA underlies parts of eight states and 208 counties in the west-central United States (see Figure 1). This region produces more than 9% of US crop sales and relies on the aquifer for irrigation. These withdrawals for irrigation have contributed to a diminished stock of water in the aquifer that varies considerably across …

A Physically Constrained Wavelet-Aided Statistical Model (Pcwasm) For Multidecadal Groundwater Dynamics Predictions And Climate Change Evaluation, Fatih Gordu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Long-term groundwater management relies on forecasts of decadal or longer groundwater levels driven by nested scales of variability in climate. Discerning the impacts of anthropogenic stressors on groundwater is also critical for establishing predevelopment benchmark groundwater conditions and developing climate change adaptation strategies to reduce risks and increase resiliency. This research demonstrates the development and successful applications of a new methodology to predict and assess multidecadal groundwater dynamics for understanding long-term effects of climate change and groundwater withdrawals.
A Physically Constrained Wavelet-Aided Statistical Model (PCWASM) is first introduced to analyze and predict monthly aquifer levels on multidecadal time scales. The …

Forecasting natural disasters such as inundations can be of great help for emergency bodies and first responders. In coastal communities, this risk is often associated with storm surge. To produce flood forecasts for coastal communities, a system must incorporate models capable of simulating such events based on forecasted weather conditions. In this work, a system for forecasting inundations based predominantly on storm surge is explored. An automation and a coupling strategy were implemented to produce forecasted flood maps automatically. The system leverages an ocean circulation model and a channel water flow model to estimate flood events in South Texas specially …

Vedantic Basis And Praxis Of The Integral Advaita Of Sri Aurobindo, Debashish Banerji
Vedantic Basis And Praxis Of The Integral Advaita Of Sri Aurobindo, Debashish Banerji
Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal
The integral nondualism of Sri Aurobindo can be traced to the great pronouncements (mahāvākya) of the Upanishads and later commentaries. This study examines teachings on the Supermind (vijñāna) and the other four kinds of consciousness that define human reality: Matter (annaṃ), Life (prāṇaḥ), Mind (manaḥ), and Bliss (ānanda). Through Yoga and Tantra, one learns and embodies the pathway to the divine.

Digital And Spatial Humanities Mapping: Eurasia-Pacific Early Trade And Belief Linkages, Igor Sitnikov, David Blundell
Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal
The Eurasia-Pacific is a dynamic region of rapid economic growth, cultural awareness, natural resource exploration, and military buildup. The concept of the region is relatively new, featuring contested vast areas of geo-resource space of numerous cultures and languages. The current findings in anthropology and archaeology and even its more specific subfields such as folklore are important contribution to the understanding of periodic environmental changes and technical innovations were the main forces of transformations in social structures that have determined the mechanisms and levels of cross-cultural trade activity across the region. We have traced early trade and belief linkages across Eurasia-Pacific …

Ganges In Indian Sculpture And Literature: Mythology And Personification, Nalini Rao
Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal
The river Ganges is a symbol of wealth, purity and eternity, and its sacred waters have inspired sages, philosophers, and artists in India who have immortalized its divine imagery. However, it has rarely been understood from a historical point of view, as to how it became so sacred and to view it from a multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary perspective with an accumulation of layers of historical thought and practices, provides a rationale for the living practices around the river. The paper explores the evolution of the concept of sacredness and eternity of River Ganges through art- historical and archaeological evidence. It …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Globally marine-terrestrial interfaces are highly impacted due to a range of human pressures. Seagrass habitats exist in the shallow marine waters of this interface, have significant values and are impacted by a range of pressures. Cumulative risk analysis is widely used to identify risk from multiple threats and assist in prioritizing management actions. This study conducted a cumulative risk analysis of seagrass habitat associated with the Australian continent to support management actions. We developed a spatially explicit risk model based on a database of threats to coastal aquatic habitat in Australia, spanning 35,000 km of coastline. Risk hotspots were identified …

Sustainable Manufacturing And Recycling Approaches For Lithium Ion Battery, Amrita Sarkar
Sustainable Manufacturing And Recycling Approaches For Lithium Ion Battery, Amrita Sarkar
Sustainability Seminar Series
Li-ion batteries (LIBs) are known to be one of the primary power sources for energy storage andconversion devices, including portable electronics and electric vehicles. State-of-the-art LIBsmanufacturing process is largely seeking advanced electrode production method with minimumenvironmental concern. Current manufacturing method is based on slurry casting process where atoxic solvent N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) is used. NMP is declared as a priority substance in USAunder the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) for having “unreasonable risk” and requires immediateregulatory action. Thus, sustainable fabrication of slurry-based electrode involving greener alternativeof NMP is needed urgently to mitigate risks to both environment and workers. Likewise, wide …

Spatiotemporal Variability In Swedish Lake Ecosystems, Tarsha Eason, Ahjond Garmestani, David G. Angeler
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Studying ecosystem dynamics is critical to monitoring and managing linked systems of humans and nature. Due to the growth of tools and techniques for collecting data, information on the condition of these systems is more widely available. While there are a variety of approaches for mining and assessing data, there is a need for methods to detect latent characteristics in ecosystems linked to temporal and spatial patterns of change. Resiliencebased approaches have been effective at not only identifying environmental change but also providing warning in advance of critical transitions in social-ecological systems (SES). In this study, we examine the usefulness …

Innovative Ideas For A Changing Geoscience: Moving Toward A Sustainable World By Attending To Its Complexity, Tim Lutz
Earth & Space Sciences Faculty Publications
Rapidly changing environmental and social conditions require thinking outside boxes and pioneering unconventional practices. But not just any innovative line of thought or novel practice will be a positive response to the major problems of our time; some might make things worse. How can we recognize unconventionality that orients us toward being more sustainable rather than less? One approach is to attend to complexity. Conventional thinking – that which is embedded throughout culture and is generally accepted – sees complexity as a characteristic of the world (earth systems are complex; society is complex) and as a problem to be simplified, …
