Population, Home Range, And Dispersal Of Red Foxes In East-Central South Dakota, James D. Sweeting

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The population, dispersal movements and summer home range of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) were studied in east-central South Dakota during 1974 and 1975. The spring population density of foxes on a 23,319 ha study area declined from 9.2 families/township in 1974 to 7.6 families/township in 1975. Fifty-four percent of 130 foxes tagged in spring, 1974 and 1975 were recovered during the first year following tagging. Hunting and trapping accounted for 18.0 and 77.8 percent, respectively. Recoveries revealed that dispersing juvenile male foxes were more mobile than juvenile females; juvenile foxes traveled a mean distance of 39 km for males and …

The Florida Coastal Zone Management Program: What, Why, How, Who., Florida Bureau Of Coastal Zone Planning, State Of Florida, Dept. Of Environmental Regulation, Division Of Environmental Programs, Bureau Of Coastal Zone Planning

Waterways and wildlife

A Florida coastal zone management program, once approved and established, will be a cooperative effort of all levels of government and the citizens of Florida. It will establish coastal land and water resource policies, based on realistic goals and objectives, that contribute to the wise use of those resources and protect the options of future generations. It will be a system that is sensitive to criticism, accessible to review and appeal, and flexible enough to reflect changing goals, needs, attitudes and lifestyles. With this approach we can not only treat current problems, but can also avoid future resource use conflicts. …

Effect Of Deforestation By The Douglas-Fir Tussock Moth On The Quality Of Streamflow And Stream Productivity Parameters, Martin Ed Hicks Jan 1977

Effect Of Deforestation By The Douglas-Fir Tussock Moth On The Quality Of Streamflow And Stream Productivity Parameters, Martin Ed Hicks

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine if deforestation by a recent outbreak of Douglas-fir tussock moth and logging of such deforested timber has had any effect on stream water quality. To determine this, seven different watersheds of three types were examined. The three types were: undamaged watersheds as controls, watersheds with deforestation and watersheds with deforestation where the timber was subsequently logged. Twenty-four variables were used to determine water quality. Included were seven biological and seventeen chemical variables.

In general, the results indicate only seasonal fluctuations and differences between watersheds due to inherent properties of individual watersheds. Increased …

Design Standards For Farm Surface Water Supplies, J L. Frith

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Design is usually concerned with getting adequate return from limited recources. Farm dams which dry up represent dam failure. Less seriously, so too do dams which, although not drying out, never fill; they waste a recource.

Species Composition, Food Habits, And The Economic And Ecologic Impact Of Winter Blackbird Flocks, Raleigh J. Robertson, Patrick J. Weatherhead, Frank J. S. Phelan, Geoffrey L. Holroyd, Nigel Lester Nov 1976

Species Composition, Food Habits, And The Economic And Ecologic Impact Of Winter Blackbird Flocks, Raleigh J. Robertson, Patrick J. Weatherhead, Frank J. S. Phelan, Geoffrey L. Holroyd, Nigel Lester

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Crop depredation by blackbirds (Icteridae) and Starlings (sturnus vulgaris) in North America has long prompted experimentation with control techniques. These efforts have been centered in the northeast and northcentral United States where concentrated cultivation of vulnerable crops coincides with the location where flocks of blackbirds congregate in the fall prior to their migration south (Stone, et al., 1972; Wiens and Dyer, 1975). In these areas the high cost and logistic impracticality of implementing widespread controls has suggested the need for modifying agricultural practices instead (Wiens and Dyer, 1975). More recently, attention has been focused farther south, particularly in Kentucky and …

Land Use Planning For Control Of Birds Near Airports, Michael J. Harrison Nov 1976

Land Use Planning For Control Of Birds Near Airports, Michael J. Harrison

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

During the 1966 Bird Control Seminar, we began to look at birds as a hazard to air- craft, and a possible new role was emerging for the pest control industry. Ten years later, we have yet to see the concept of bird control as seen through the eyes of our Canadian and European counterparts. You know of the assistance role the Air Force is playing in reducing bird strikes, and the Federal Aviation Administration is beginning to actively participate in bird control programs. Success has been seen in habitat modification as a means of reducing bird strikes. The Canadians (Blokpoel, …

Aircraft And Birds, Victor E. F. Solman Nov 1976

Aircraft And Birds, Victor E. F. Solman

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

At the third seminar I reported that our work on ecological changes at airports was a useful method of controlling bird hazards to aircraft. At the fifth seminar I talked about our studies of bird migration by radar and the use of that knowledge to keep flying aircraft away from bird concentrations. Those techniques are still effective. Since then we have: sought ground cover less attractive to birds than grass; developed methods of controlling earthworms to reduce bird attraction; improved radar data handling; improved bird hazard forecasts; studied light effects on birds; quantified bird spacing in flocks; studied the relation …

Bird Strikes And The Air Force, Portia R. Mccracken Nov 1976

Bird Strikes And The Air Force, Portia R. Mccracken

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

The first recorded bird strike accident was in 1912, when a gull got caught in an air- craft control cable. The pilot was killed in the crash. Since that first squaring-off, man and bird have been engaged in an accelerating contest in which there can be no winner. At first, birdstrikes were not really much of a problem. Aircraft were slow, and birds were able to learn to move out of their paths in time to avoid a collision. But, with the coming of the jet age, the problem began to take on more sinister proportions. At this point, birds …

A Review Of The Limnology Of And Water Quality Standards For Lake Mead, Charles R. Goldman Oct 1976

A Review Of The Limnology Of And Water Quality Standards For Lake Mead, Charles R. Goldman

Publications (WR)

1. The waters of Las Vegas Bay, a heavily utilized recreational resource, receive discharges from a variety of municipal and industrial waste sources. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has determined, on the basis of numerous studies, that the present water quality violates state and federal standards and constitutes a public nuisance. Consultants have advised the Sewage and Wastewater Advisory Committee that rapid abatement of the alleged pollution conditions can be achieved by an advanced wastewater treatment (AWT) plant.

2. The major problems in Las Vegas Bay are an objectionable water color, excessive turbidity, noxious odors, and oxygen depletion in certain …

Publications (WR)

This report is concerned with the management of waste-waters and subsurface drainage from the City of Las Vegas and its environs and the BMI complex, all in Clark County, Nevada. The prime objective is to recommend a plan of action which will utilize the natural resources of the area in the least costly manner and still protect Lake Mead for recreational purposes and use as a public water supply, At this writing, conditions in the upper Las Vegas arm of Boulder Basin are quite unsatisfactory for some recreational purposes due to the extensive blooms of algae which develop. Experience at …

Botanical Pioneers Of The Nebraska Sandhills, Curtis Twedt, Carl Wolfe Aug 1976

Botanical Pioneers Of The Nebraska Sandhills, Curtis Twedt, Carl Wolfe

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

The Nebraska Sandhills comprise an area of about 20,000 square miles, extending from about 980 30' to 1030 . Northern and southern boundaries are parallel with the Niobrara and Platte River valleys, respectively. The Sandhills merge with the Loess Hills physiographic region at the southeast, resulting in irregular interfaces of low dunes with clay bluffs and canyons of the latter region (Elder, 1969).
