Extensive studies have been reported on the air pollutant sulphur dioxide (SO₂), and its effects on vascular and nonvascular plants. It has been shown to interrupt normal physiology, metabolism, reproduction, and alter the plant’s morphology.

Of the cryptogams, lichens have been extensively used as biological indicators of air pollution. More recently, bryophytes have been shown to be as sensitive to contaminates as lichens, and may exhibit responses to the pollutant similar to those of vascular and nonvascular plants. The threshold sensitivity of these cryptogams is about 0.5 ppm over a 12 hour period. However no study to date …

Most of the presentations from other members of the panel have discussed direct predation of one animal upon another with evidence and data to support it. Their presentations indicate that in some instances, considerable data has been collected that substantiates the fact that predation has been and can be a limiting factor in sustaining certain local animal populations. Suggestions have also been made concerning management alternatives that might help to reduce this predatory impact when desirable. Distribution of the bobcat includes the 48 contiguous United States and limited occupance of southern Canada and northern Mexico. There are 11 subspecies, the one in Wyoming being Lynx rufus pallescens. Bobcats inhabit an amazing variety of habitat types, from northern boreal forests, southern swamp, and cane regions to the below sea level desert of Death Valley, California. Throughout this vast area, they utilize a wide variety of prey species. One study in Wyoming revealed at least 18 different species in the stomachs of bobcats; the cottontail rabbit being predominant. A similar study in New England revealed 20 different …

The pleomorphism of Coprinus radians was studied. The three distinct growth forms--sporophore, oidial stage, and ozonium stage--were examined in relation to ultrastructure, morphology and development. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy are correlated with photomicrographs of developmental stages. Development of the oidia and of the sporophore are of particular interest. The multinucleate oidia develop quite differently from oidia as generally described for Basidiomycete imperfect stages. Development of the oidia of this Coprinus is holoblastic and sympodial. The mushroom primordia are differentiated internally into gill, cap, and stipe hyphae while only l-2mm in diameter. At this stage they look superficially like sclerotial …

There is a long history of involvement between Kansas State University (formerly Kansas State Agricultural College) and township governmental units regarding control of prairie dogs. In 1901 and 1903, the Kansas legislature passed laws authorizing townships to conduct prairie dog control programs and providing funds for the College to conduct experiments on methods of controlling prairie dogs and gophers. The acts also directed the College to procure and furnish to the townships the proper prepared materials for prairie dog control. The Experiment Station began supplying strychnine baits in January of 1902 and continued this practice until 1970.

This paper summarizes information from the literature and personal observation to present an overview of the effects of predators on big game populations. Specifically it examines control of prey populations, culling of inferior prey, and stimulation of prey productivity. Food habit investigations were omitted because of the impossibility of evaluating the impact of predation by this approach because of a lack of population data.

Fisheries Report No 30 - The Wildlife Of The Proposed Karroun Hill Nature Reserve, Western Australia, W. K. Youngson, N. L. Mckenzie

Fisheries Research Reports

Plants and vertebrate animals were recorded from a proposed 300 000 ha nature reserve centred on Karroun Hill in the goldfields of Western Australia (30°03'S; 118°02'E).

Plant communities are described in terms of their structurally important species and related to local physiography.

Fifteen native mammal species, sixty-four bird species, twenty-four reptile species and one amphibian were recorded. Annotated lists are presented. The wildlife reflects the transitional nature of the Coolgardie Botanical District. Both Eremean and South Western Province species were recorded.

Assessment Of The Water Quality In The Salt River Prior To Its Impoundment In Anderson And Spencer Counties, Kentucky, Andrew C. Miller, Louis A. Krumholz, Stuart E. Neff, Darly E. Jennings, Patricia B. Olmes, David S. White

Monthly water samples were taken and analyzed to determine the water quality of the Salt River in Anderson and Spencer counties Kentucky prior to the river's impoundment. Sediments from the area watershed were analyzed to total acid digestion, barium chloride extraction, and aqueous extraction methods. Rainwater and runoff water were collected and analyzed for major cations and anions from two sites in the watershed.

The Salt River at Taylorsville is characterized by hard water with high levels of calcium (33.5-74.8 mg/1), bicarbonate (136-236 mg/l), specific conductance (200-535 μmhos/cm), and sulfate (16.5-71.5 mg/l). Nitrates (0.6-5.7 mg/l), phosphates (0.2-2.4 mg/l), sodium (3.2-20.3 …

We have significantly increased our analytical capabilities this year by developing a cooperative project with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and continuing our cooperative program with E.P.A. We also were able to derive significant benefit from the reviews of the Pollution Abatement Project written by Clair Sawyer and Charles Goldman. The Buffalo River originates in the Ozark plateau in Newton County, Arkansas. This magnificent Ozarkian wilderness river is about 238 km long and flows north-eastward to its confluence with the White River. The Buffalo River drains 3,465 km² and has some 30 named tributaries. In its upper reaches, huge multicolored cliffs extend nearly 213 m above the river as it flows through mountainous countryside which reaches an elevation of 732 m. Within its watershed may be found 700 species of plant life, a habitat for 250 species of birds, and a variety of game animals. In its aquatic habitat …

This study was initiated to determine operational characteristics of runoff control facility components for beef cattle feedlots.

A runoff control facility was designed and constructed for a 3,000 head capacity feedlot in eastern Nebraska. Components of the runoff control facility included debris basins inside the pen and outside the pen, a holding pond, and a disposal system.

Results indicated that design volumes for the debris basins and holding ponds were effective in controlling runoff from the lots caused by snowmelt and rainfall for climatic conditions within eastern Nebraska. Characteristics of runoff transported solids from this large lot compared favorably with …

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Phytoplankton samples were collected monthly (August 1974-June 1975) at two stations in the Back Bay system of southeastern Virginia. Measurements of phytoplankton productivity and potentially influencing environmental parameters (water and air temperature, turbidity, depth, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen) accompanied sample collections. A total of 106 phytoplankton species, representing six algal divisions and 54 genera were identified. Cyanophyta species were dominant at both stations in the warmer months of August, September, October, and June, and in April at one station only. In all remaining months, Chlorophyta species were dominant, indicating a seasonal shift in phytoplankton composition during winter and spring. The …

The affect of the Anclote Power Station on the plankton community was evaluated by (1) determining differences among stations, (2) comparing results from the post-operational plankton monitoring program, 93) examining any major changes in seasonal cycles from those expected of plankton communities in shallow-water, subtropical estuaries and (4) determining the frequency of occurrence and extent of temperatures known to adversely affect the copepods Acartia tonsa and Oithona spp.

As part of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has required that Florida Power Corporation (FPC) demonstrate that .operation of the Anclote Power Station does not adversely affect the aquatic community of the Anclote River and Anchorage. In response to this requirement FPC initiated the Anclote Post-operational Ecological Monitoring Program and contracted with Westinghouse Environmental Systems Department to conduct the plankton monitoring portion of the program.
