Demonstrating Sustainable Farm Management Systems. Final Report For Rcg05-Ord13, Tara Slaven, Francis Bright, Jodie Hawley, Joe Sherrard

Natural resources research reports

The Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA) has a 'flow through' irrigation system. That is, irrigation water is diverted from Lake Kununurra and any waste water from the irrigation system and farms flows directly back into the river downstream. This means that any sediment, nutrient or chemicals in tailwater from farms flows straight into the river.

The Ord Land and Water Management Plan 2000 specifies goals to improve surface water quality. The goals are to reduce the load of chemical and nutrient contamination and sediment in tailwater by 40 per cent.

The aim of this project was to develop and demonstrate …

An Inventory And Condition Survey Of The Lower Murchison River Area, Western Australia, P Hennig

Technical Bulletins

The inventory and condition survey of the lower Murchison River area, undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) between 2002 and 2003, describes and maps the natural resources of the region’s pastoral leasehold land. This survey report provides a baseline record of the existence and condition of the natural area’s resources, to assist with the planning and implementation of land management practices. The report identified and described the condition of soils, landforms, vegetation, habitat, ecosystems, and declared plants and animals. It also assessed the impact of pastoralism and made land management recommendations. This survey report presents …

Diet Of Pygmy Sperm Whales (Kogia Breviceps) In The Hawaiian Archipelago, Kristi West, William Walker, Robin Baird, Whitney White, Gregg Levine, Eric Brown, David Schofield Jan 2009

Diet Of Pygmy Sperm Whales (Kogia Breviceps) In The Hawaiian Archipelago, Kristi West, William Walker, Robin Baird, Whitney White, Gregg Levine, Eric Brown, David Schofield

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The biology and ecology of the pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps) is poorly understood among odontocetes (McAlpine 2002). In Hawaiian waters, pygmy sperm whales are the second most frequently recorded stranded cetacean species, with 35 strandings documented between 1963 and 2008 (Shallenberger 1981, Nitta 1987, Maldini et al. 2005, NMFS database). Despite the high frequency of strandings, sightings of this species in Hawaiian waters are rare (Baird 2005). Given the low number of sightings, examination of stranded animals provides virtually the only means to study the biology and ecology of pygmy sperm whales in the area.

Treatment Of Northern Fur Seal (Callorhinus Ursinus) Pups With Ivermectin Reduces Hookworm-Induced Mortality, Robert Delong, Anthony Orr, Ryan Jenkinson, Eugene T. Lyons Jan 2009

Treatment Of Northern Fur Seal (Callorhinus Ursinus) Pups With Ivermectin Reduces Hookworm-Induced Mortality, Robert Delong, Anthony Orr, Ryan Jenkinson, Eugene T. Lyons

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

A breeding population of approximately 8,000–10,000 northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) is located at San Miguel Island in the California Channel Islands. The population is increasing and produces about 2,500 pups annually (Melin et al. 2008). Pup mortality has increased during the past 10 yr and has reached 50% or more in some recent years. Although we have not completed studies to describe the causes of this pup mortality, it appears that hookworm disease has been a major cause (Lyons et al. 2001).

An Hsus Report: The Implications Of Farm Animal-Based Bioenergy Production, The Humane Society Of The United States

Impact of Animal Agriculture

As the current and potential impacts of climate change become more evident and increasingly urgent, entities such as governments, corporations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are seeking out non-fossil fuelbased sources of energy to mitigate those effects. In addition, many governments are investigating ways to promote their own domestic energy sources as a result of rising oil prices. Bioenergy—made from recently living organic matter, such as plants, agricultural waste and crop residue, meat processing wastes, or farmed animals’ fats and manure—has quickly become one of the fastest growing, and controversial, alternative energy sources. Globally, production of biofuels, generally used for transport, …

Predicted Fire Behavior And Societal Benefits In Three Eastern Sierra Nevada Vegetation Types, Christopher Dicus, Kenneth Delfino, David R. Weise Jan 2009

Predicted Fire Behavior And Societal Benefits In Three Eastern Sierra Nevada Vegetation Types, Christopher Dicus, Kenneth Delfino, David R. Weise

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

We investigated potential fire behavior and various societal benefits (air pollution removal, carbon sequestration, and carbon storage) provided by woodlands of pinyon pine (Pinus monophylla) and juniper (Juniperus californica), shrublands of Great Basin sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) and rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa), and recently burned annual grasslands near a wildland-urban interface (WUI) community in the high desert of the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. Fire behavior simulations showed that shrublands had the greatest flame lengths under low wind conditions, and that pinyon-juniper woodlands had the greatest flame lengths when winds exceeded 25 km hr-1 …

Structured Decision Making As A Conceptual Framework To Identify Thresholds For Conservation And Management, Julien Martin, Michael C. Runge, James D. Nichols, Bruce C. Lubow, William L. Kendall Jan 2009

Structured Decision Making As A Conceptual Framework To Identify Thresholds For Conservation And Management, Julien Martin, Michael C. Runge, James D. Nichols, Bruce C. Lubow, William L. Kendall

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Thresholds and their relevance to conservation have become a major topic of discussion in the ecological literature. Unfortunately, in many cases the lack of a clear conceptual framework for thinking about thresholds may have led to confusion in attempts to apply the concept of thresholds to conservation decisions. Here, we advocate a framework for thinking about thresholds in terms of a structured decision making process. The purpose of this framework is to promote a logical and transparent process for making informed decisions for conservation.

Specification of such a framework leads naturally to consideration of definitions and roles of different kinds …

Bats And Bell Holes: The Microclimatic Impact Of Bat Roosting, Using A Case Study From Runaway Bay Caves, Jamaica, Joyce Lundberg, Donald A. Mcfarlane Jan 2009

Bats And Bell Holes: The Microclimatic Impact Of Bat Roosting, Using A Case Study From Runaway Bay Caves, Jamaica, Joyce Lundberg, Donald A. Mcfarlane

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

The microclimatic effect of bats roosting in bell holes (blind vertical cylindrical cavities in cave roofs) in Runaway Bay Caves, Jamaica, was measured and the potential impact of their metabolism on dissolution modelled. Rock temperature measurements showed that bell holes with bats get significantly hotter than those without bats during bat roosting periods (by an average of 1.1 °C). The relationship is clearest for bell holes with more than about 300 g aggregate bat body mass and for bell holes that are moderately wide and deep, of W:D ratio between 0.8 and 1.6. Measurement of temperature decay after abandonment showed …

Estimating Survival Of Precocial Chicks During The Prefledging Period Using A Catch-Curve Analysis And Count-Based Age-Class Data, Conor P. Mcgowan, Joshua J. Millspaugh, Mark R. Ryan, Casey D. Kruse, Greg Pavelka Jan 2009

Estimating Survival Of Precocial Chicks During The Prefledging Period Using A Catch-Curve Analysis And Count-Based Age-Class Data, Conor P. Mcgowan, Joshua J. Millspaugh, Mark R. Ryan, Casey D. Kruse, Greg Pavelka

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

ABSTRACT: Estimating reproductive success for birds with pre-cocial young can be difficult because chicks leave nests soon after hatching and individuals or broods can be difficult to track. Researchers often turn to estimating survival during the pre-fledging period and, though effective, mark-recapture based approaches are not always feasible due to cost, time, and animal welfare concerns. Using a threatened population of Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) that breeds along the Missouri River, we present an approach for estimating chick survival during the pre-fledging period using long-term (1993–2005), count-based, age-class data. We used a modified catch-curve analysis, and data collected …

Solar And Topographical Breeding Habitat Preferences Of Two Damselflies Calopteryx Aequabilis And Calopteryx Maculata, Christopher St. Andre Jan 2009

Solar And Topographical Breeding Habitat Preferences Of Two Damselflies Calopteryx Aequabilis And Calopteryx Maculata, Christopher St. Andre

Undergraduate Review

As the global climate changes many species are forced to adapt, but if the climate changes beyond their tolerance levels they can face extinction1. Scientists need to work fast in order to mitigate these extinctions. Using field observations of species’ habitats coupled with the use of geographic information systems (GIS), researchers can model the locations of ideal habitats. Using these models, scientists can work to improve conservation efforts by raising the populations of dwindling species or predicting locations to place new subpopulations. Data used in GIS are spatially explicit, so stored within individual data sets and information systems are locational …

Carbon Nanotube Cluster Based Micro-Fluidic System For Bacteria Capture, Concentration, And Separation, Chris Nelson Jan 2009

Carbon Nanotube Cluster Based Micro-Fluidic System For Bacteria Capture, Concentration, And Separation, Chris Nelson

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Disease-causing pathogens continue presenting enormous global health problems, especially due to their easy transmittance to people via water supply systems. The detection, filtration, and purification of bacteria-contaminated water samples are complex activities, ones subject to considerable error. Here we present a new and highly effective micro-fluidic system with carbon nanotube (CNT) clusters for effective and efficient detection, filtration, and purification of bacteria-contaminated medium. The developed system is based upon two unique properties of CNT clusters: high bacterial affinity and magnetic susceptibility. The CNTs 'high affinity to bacteria cells makes them a key candidate for the bacteria adsorption. The magnetic susceptibility …

Rat Population Assessment And Control In Eastern Suburbs Of Cleveland, Ohio, James W. Coates Jan 2009

Rat Population Assessment And Control In Eastern Suburbs Of Cleveland, Ohio, James W. Coates

ETD Archive

The Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) is found to inhabit many urbanized areas needs to be controlled, given that it is a carrier of diseases and a source of economic damages. As harborage areas in suburbs, the rat prefers compost piles, cesspits, sewer systems, and basements that are near water. Norway rats prefer food sources such as waste disposal sites, unclean yards with trashcans, gardens, and slaughterhouses (Traweger and Slotta-Bachmayr 2004). The typical range for this species in an urban setting is 25-150 meters (27-164 yards). The research for this thesis was done in conjunction with the Cuyahoga County Board of …

Landscape Structure Control On Soil Co2 Efflux Variability In Complex Terrain: Scaling From Point Observations To Watershed Scale Fluxes, Diego Andrés Riveros-Iregui, Brian L. Mcglynn Jan 2009

Landscape Structure Control On Soil Co2 Efflux Variability In Complex Terrain: Scaling From Point Observations To Watershed Scale Fluxes, Diego Andrés Riveros-Iregui, Brian L. Mcglynn

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We investigated the spatial and temporal variability of soil CO2 efflux across 62 sites of a 393-ha complex watershed of the northern Rocky Mountains. Growing season (83 day) cumulative soil CO2 efflux varied from ~300 to ~2000 g CO2 m—2, depending upon landscape position, with a median of 879.8 g CO2 m—2. Our findings revealed that highest soil CO2 efflux rates were observed in areas with persistently high soil moisture (riparian meadows), whereas lower soil CO2 efflux rates were observed on forested uplands (98% of watershed area). Furthermore, upslope accumulated …

Spring Home Ranges Of White Bass In Irrigation Reservoirs Of The Republican River Basin, Nebraska, D. R. Martin, Larkin A. Powell, K. L. Pope Jan 2009

Spring Home Ranges Of White Bass In Irrigation Reservoirs Of The Republican River Basin, Nebraska, D. R. Martin, Larkin A. Powell, K. L. Pope

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Fishery biologists have documented small home ranges, relative to available habitat, for many littoral freshwater fishes. Home ranges for pelagic species, such as white bass Morone chrysops, are generally not well described, yet are thought to be large. We studied white bass movement using acoustic telemetry in two irrigation reservoirs of the Republican River basin in south-western Nebraska. Acoustic transmitters were implanted in fall of the previous year and tracking occurred a minimum of once per week throughout spring (mid-March to May) 2007 and 2008. Linear home ranges were calculated from observed locations of individual fish. Twelve of the …

A System For Estimating Bowen Ratio And Evaporation From Waste Lagoons, Arturo I. Quintanar, Rezaul Mahmood, John H. Loughrin, Nanh Lovanh, Monica V. Motley

High Plains Regional Climate Center: Staff Publications

A low‐cost system was deployed above a swine waste lagoon to obtain estimates of Bowen ratios and characterize lagoon temperatures. The system consisted of humidity and temperature sensors and anemometers deployed above the lagoon, water temperature sensors, and a meteorological station located by the lagoon. To evaluate the system, data was analyzed from the 25th through 28th June 2007. Bowen ratios showed diurnal behavior near the lagoon surface characterized by negative values during day and positive ones at night. Latent (evaporation) and sensible heat fluxes were towards the atmosphere and the lagoon, respectively for most of the day. A diurnal …

Life History Parameters Of The Humpback Whale (Megaptera Novaengliae) In The Waters Of The Gulf Of Maine For The 2007 Feeding Season, Meghan Wert

Undergraduate Review

The humpback whale (Megaptera novaengliae) is an endangered species of baleen whale that feeds in the waters of the Gulf of Maine during the spring, summer and fall. The worldwide population of humpback whales ranges from 60,000 to 80,000 individuals and the population within the Gulf of Maine is estimated between 9,000 to 11,000. Humpback whales are a large baleen whale that reaches an average length of 40 to 50 feet and a weight of 35 to 40 tons. Although protected worldwide since the International Whaling Commission in 1964, this population has increased slowly and is still considered …

Mitigation Under Section 404 Of The Clean Water Act: Where It Comes From, What It Means, Palmer Hough, Morgan Robertson Jan 2009

Mitigation Under Section 404 Of The Clean Water Act: Where It Comes From, What It Means, Palmer Hough, Morgan Robertson

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The requirement to mitigate impacts to wetlands and streams is a frequently misunderstood policy with a long and complicated history. We narrate the history of mitigation since the inception of the Clean Water Act Section 404 permit program in 1972, through struggles between the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Army Corps of Engineers, through the emerging importance of wetland conservation on the American political landscape, and through the rise of market-based approaches to environmental policy. Mitigation, as it is understood today, was not initially foreseen as a component of the Section 404 permitting program, but was adapted from …

Do Monk Seals Exert Top-Down Pressure In Subphotic Ecosystems?, Frank Parrish Jan 2009

Do Monk Seals Exert Top-Down Pressure In Subphotic Ecosystems?, Frank Parrish

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Patterns of subphotic fish assemblages on seamounts in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands were identified and compared for potential structuring influences, including the bottom-up effects of regional oceanic productivity and top-down predation pressure exerted by visiting monk seals (Monachus schauinslandi). Patterns in fish size, density, and biomass were evaluated at the deep extreme (350–500 m) of the seals feeding range to avoid confounding effects of diverse shallow habitats (e.g., coral reefs). Fish number and size were used to calculate biomass density of the seamount fish assemblages that were then compared to the independent variables of summit depth, substrate type, …
