Final Report Buffalo National River Ecosystems Part Iv, R. E. Babcock, E. E. Dale, R. L. Meyer, D. G. Parker, E. G. Smith, M. D. Springer

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Sampling point locations and analytical procedures remained unchanged from those outlined in previous Buffalo National River Ecosystem reports. The only significant change in analytical procedures was a reversion to the glass fiber filter method for collection and extraction of samples for chlorophyll analysis. This change was neeessitated by a need for filtering a larger volume to obtain enough chlorophyll for an accurate measurement. Samples were collected monthly from April 9 through December 30. No samples were taken in January or February due to the extremely uncertain traveling conditions caused by the frequent snows. Prior research indicates that the December 30 …

About one-half of these water quality measurements were generated from Bay or River samples collected at the regular networks. About one-fourth were collected by the sewage treatment plant monitoring …

Effects Of Grazing Systems On Sharp-Tailed Grouse Habitat, Samuel N. Mattise Jan 1978

Effects Of Grazing Systems On Sharp-Tailed Grouse Habitat, Samuel N. Mattise

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Effects of grazing systems on sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianellus jamesi) nesting and brooding habitats in the Little Missouri National Grasslands of southwestern North Dakota were evaluated. Three grazing allotments with deferred-rotation grazing systems and three allotments with season-long grazing systems were randomly selected for study. Fifty measurements of vegetation were taken using the height-density pole on line transects in each of three range sites; rolling grasslands, upland grasslands and lowland draws. Vegetation was sampled in late spring, summer and fall of 1976 and early spring of 1977. Average height-density of vegetation for the season-long grazing system was significantly greater than …

Studies On The Role Of Solar Ultraviolet Radiation In "Natural" Water Purification By Aquatic Ecosystems, John Calkins, Jeanne A. Barcelo, Perry Grigsby, Stephen Martin

KWRRI Research Reports

The possibility that pollution might deplete the stratospheric ozone layer and intensify solar UV at the earth's surface focuses attention on the role of solar UV in the various ecosystems at the earth's surface. Previous studies suggested that solar UV might contribute to bacterial die off in wastewater and the studies reported here were directed toward elucidating the action of solar UV in "natural" waters.

It has been assumed that solar UV action on aquatic ecosystems can be evaluated (using proper models) on the basis of the following four independently measurable quantities: I) the intensity of solar UV at the …

Twenty four pairs were located in 1976 and 18 pairs attempted to nest; 17 pairs located in 1977 attempted to nest. The ecological density of breeding pairs was approximately one per 100 km2. Young fledged per nesting attempt averaged 1.89 in 1976 and 2.29 in 1977. All but one nest were located in unbroken, lightly grazed prairie and all were situated on hills, buttes, or river cutbanks. General nest orientation was toward the south and west. …

Cost Allocation Alternatives For The Senegal River Development Program, J. Paul Riley, Jay C. Andersen, A. Bruce Bishop, David S. Bowles, John E. Keith Jan 1978

Cost Allocation Alternatives For The Senegal River Development Program, J. Paul Riley, Jay C. Andersen, A. Bruce Bishop, David S. Bowles, John E. Keith

Reports

The primary purpose of the study reported herein is to present methods for using estimated project benefits as the basis for distributing the capital, oeprating, maintenance, and replacement costs associated with the proposed Senegal River development program. The problem is complicated because the Senegal River is an international stream, so that it is necessary to consider not only the various economic use sectors involved with the program, but also the three separate countries of Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal. In attempting to meet the primary objective stated above, the report proposes an economic model which estimates economic benefits of the development …

The Great Basin Climate Study For Range Fire Management, Kenneth G. Hubbard, Joel E. Fletcher Jan 1978

The Great Basin Climate Study For Range Fire Management, Kenneth G. Hubbard, Joel E. Fletcher

Reports

The BLM (Bureau of Land Management) fire management personnel routinely use a fire danger computer program to estimate the effects of recent weather upon the fire hazard on the BLM rangeland sites. The program used for this purpose is the National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS) which was developed by the National Forest Service (Deeming, 1978). The NFDRS was used in conjunction with fire weather stations in the Great Basin for the dual purposes of evaluating the ability of NFDRS to predict fire danger and of determining the effectiveness of the present fire station network in detecting fire weather on …

Comprehensive Plan For Fish And Wildlife On Nebraska National Forest System Lands Jan 1978

Comprehensive Plan For Fish And Wildlife On Nebraska National Forest System Lands

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

Wildlife and fish are integral and functional parts of forest and grassland environments. Application of this plan should improve and maintain habitats, as well as the types and populations of wildlife species within them. Various types of habitat manipulation are effective means of improving such environments to produce a diversified and sustained supply of wildlife. and fish. Direct habitat improvement and coordination with other resource management programs will be used to help realize the management objectives as they concern lands under Forest Service administration. However, this plan is not a "recipe book," requiring specified ingredients or actions. Rather it provides …

A Simulation Model For Ring-Necked Pheasants, Melvin W. Taylor Jan 1978

A Simulation Model For Ring-Necked Pheasants, Melvin W. Taylor

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

One of the most important game birds in the United States is the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). This Asian refugee has provided recreation for untold numbers of sportsmen. Its presence has meant millions of dollars for state game agency coffers, not to mention its impact on local economies. Pheasant populations have fluctuated widely in past years, but the overall trend since the early 1960's has been downward over most of the pheasant range. This decline was caused primarily by loss of habitat due to change in agricultural land use (Mohlis 1974, Dahlgren 1963, Kobriger 1972, Taylor et al. …

The Effects Of Sulphur Dioxide On Selected Hepatics, Steven L. Gatchel Jan 1978

The Effects Of Sulphur Dioxide On Selected Hepatics, Steven L. Gatchel

Masters Theses

Extensive studies have been reported on the air pollutant sulphur dioxide (SO2), and its effects on vascular and nonvascular plants. It has been shown to interrupt normal physiology, metabolism, reproduction, and alter the plant’s morphology.

Of the cryptogams, lichens have been extensively used as biological indicators of air pollution. More recently, bryophytes have been shown to be as sensitive to contaminates as lichens, and may exhibit responses to the pollutant similar to those of vascular and nonvascular plants. The threshold sensitivity of these cryptogams is about 0.5 ppm over a 12 hour period. However no study to date …
