A Chance-Constrained Programming Model Of Water Allocations In Utah, John E. Keith, Gustavo A. Martinez Gerstl, Rangesan Narayanan, Donald L. Snyder
A Chance-Constrained Programming Model Of Water Allocations In Utah, John E. Keith, Gustavo A. Martinez Gerstl, Rangesan Narayanan, Donald L. Snyder
Reports
A chance-constrained separable programming model of water allocations between agriculture and energy production was developed in order to examine the effect of the variability of water supplies in Utah. Using an incomplete gamma function, based on method of moments estimation of parameters, the water flows at 85, 90, and 95 percent probabilities of occurence were generated. These flows were then used as constraints in the allocation model. Results indicate that water quality could be a more significant constraint on irrigated agriculture than water quantity in the face of large scale energy development, and the variability of water availability alone is …

The Exploitation Of The Antarctic Oil And Its Environmental And Legal Implications, Renzo Follegati
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The focus of the paper is the feasible exploitation of the Antarctic offshore oil and the environmental consequences that this fact could have to the whole ecosystem of the Southern Ocean and for other ecosystems of neighboring regions, e.g. the South East Pacific basin. The legal implications that have to do with the exploitation of the Antarctic oil and the regulations that could be applied to preserve the environment are examined.

The Influence Of Salinity On Larval Development And Population Dynamics Of Anopheles Merus Dönitz (Diptera: Culicidae), F. W. Mosha, C. M. Mutero
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Variations in density of adults of Anopheles merus Dön. in Jimbo Village on the Kenya Coast were found to be correlated both with rainfall and with salinity at their breeding sites. Densities started to increase at the beginning of the rains when several breeding sites were formed. This was followed by a decline in numbers resulting mainly from the decrease in salinity in the semi-permanent breeding sites. A second rise occurred after the end of the rains, corresponding with an increase in salinity in the semi-permanent breeding sites due to evaporation. Peak density coincided with salinities of 30–50% sea water …
Urban Vertebrate Pest Management: A Practical Approach, Patricia A. Chamberlain, Milton Caroline, William A. Wright
Urban Vertebrate Pest Management: A Practical Approach, Patricia A. Chamberlain, Milton Caroline, William A. Wright
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Urban vertebrate pest management is influenced by a variety of factors. Public perceptions of wildlife limit control specialists in their methods of operation. Population density, costs of operation and timing of control are considered. Suggestions are made for operational mode, methods, baits, traps and disposal. Two new trapping concepts are described and experimental data on attractants are given. Computer-summarized data on urban wild life conflicts from one state (Texas) show that most complaints can be handled by extension methods supplemented with direct control by the public and wild life damage control specialists.

Use Of Starlicide To Reduce Starling Damage At Livestock Feeding Operations, James F. Glahn
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Starling damage at livestock feedlots is discussed and background information is given on the properties of Starlicide® which need to be considered when using this product for control of starlings. A five-step guideline for a starling control program with Starlicide is presented: pre-treatment assessment, collecting information and materials, pre-baiting, baiting strategies with bait containers and broadcast application methods, and post-treatment assessment.
Reducing Coyote Damage To Sheep With Non-Lethal Techniques, Jeffrey S. Green
Reducing Coyote Damage To Sheep With Non-Lethal Techniques, Jeffrey S. Green
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Since 1972, when the U.S. Government restricted uses of toxicants for controlling coyotes, a variety of non-lethal techniques has been tested for effectiveness in protecting livestock. Some were ineffective, but others helped to reduce the incidence of predation on sheep. In addition to sound management practices, electric fencing and livestock guarding dogs appear to have the widest applicability for sheep producers. Mechanical frightening devices have been successful in some fenced pasture sheep operations. As with the lethal methods currently used, non-lethal control does not solve all depredation problems. A combination of various control techniques (both lethal and non-lethal) is necessary …

Instars And Polymorphism Of Castes In Macrotermes Michaelseni (Isoptera, Macrotermitinae), B. M. Okot-Kotber
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Biometric studies and physiological investigations made it possible to propose a scheme of post-embryonic development and polymorphism in Macrotermes michaelseni. An instar hitherto undescribed has been found and designated fourth instar. This instar is comprised of female larvae which moult into major presoldiers. Minor presoldiers moult from some of the third instar female larvae which are morphologically identical to the female worker larvae. Three instars were detected in the case of both minor and major worker development. Workers and soldiers are sterile castes. Nymphs develop from first instar larvae and moult through five instars before imaginal moult. © 1981 Masson.

The Reclamation Of The Victory Mine Site, Vigo County, Indiana, Carla J. Badger
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was involved with the physical and socioeconomic aspects related to the reclamation of the Victory Mine located in Vigo County, Indiana. The Victory Mine is an abandoned slope mine which includes 165 acres of gob and slurry. During the past ten years the site has been used as a sanitary landfill utilizing the gob as a covering agent. Pollution of Honey Creek, a tributary to the Wabash River, has been caused by sediment and acid mine drainage from the Victory Mine. Possible reclamation procedures were outlined for the Victory Mine site. Physical aspects included soils, surface and ground …

Fuel Saving Methods For The Commercial Fishing Fleet, Gerald H. Taylor
Fuel Saving Methods For The Commercial Fishing Fleet, Gerald H. Taylor
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The Oil Embargo of 1973 emphasized not only how oil dependent the fishing industry has become but that the days of inexpensive energy had ended. Oil prices have risen dramatically, but so have the price tags on new technologies, labor, vessel renovation, new construction and the cost of procuring capital for making improvements. However, one must focus on the long range picture versus the short term snap shot. This can be accomplished by looking at two aspects of the problem. First, as costs increase so does the price of fish in the marketplace. There is a point however where the …

The Potential Of The Port Of New York In The Export/Domestic Coal Trade, Jane E. Mccallion
The Potential Of The Port Of New York In The Export/Domestic Coal Trade, Jane E. Mccallion
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This paper researches the potential of the Port of New York in the Export/Domestic coal trade markets. The Port is faced with short-term and long-term proposals in order to enter these markets. On a short-term basis, the Port will be able to offer an advantage to export markets because of the backlog at the traditional coal ports of Hampton Roads, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. A modest export trade can develop this way. In the domestic trade, substantial inroads can be made due to the conversion of power plants in New England to coal-fired. In the long-term, the Port is faced with the …
The Energy Expenditure Of Heifers Grazing Crested Wheatgrass Rangeland In West-Central Utah, Kris M. Havstad
The Energy Expenditure Of Heifers Grazing Crested Wheatgrass Rangeland In West-Central Utah, Kris M. Havstad
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The free-roaming ruminant requires energy for the demands of vii grazing, traveling and thermoregulation that are not required by its confined counterpart. Literature estimates of these additional costs range from 10 to 170 percent above maintenance. The uncertain magnitude of this increased demand and the factors that contribute to it impede the ability of the rangeland ruminant nutritionist to establish guidelines for the energy requirements of the free-roaming herbivore. This study was designed to estimate the energy expenditure of yearling Angus heifers while grazing a declining supply of available crested wheatgrass forage (Agropyron cristatum) on rangeland in west-central …

The Rhode Island Quahogger: Candidate For The List Of Endangered Species?, James M. Korney
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
It is the hypothesis of this paper that today the livelihood of the independent Narragansett Bay quahogger is faced with two potentially dangerous threats; water pollution in upper Narragansett Bay and the prospect of an expanding aquaculture industry in the lower bay. Unless the state of Rhode Island properly interprets and enforces existing state legislation to protect the quahoggers interests, his very livelihood will be jeoprodized. This paper will examine the legal, political, economic, and environmental affects of water pollution in upper Narragansett Bay and an expanding aquaculture industry in the lower bay in their relation to the Rhode Island …

(1) Gravid females representing fourteen species of marine snakes were collected from four localities along the coast of Malaysia in 1975. The average clutch size ranged from 2.9 to 17.8 but most species had between three and seven young. The number of young produced and the size of gravid Lapemis hardwickii differed significantly at two sites in the Straits of Malacca. Eight species showed a significantly positive relationship between the number of oviducal eggs and female weight. The rate of infertility among ten species ranged from 4.5 to 20%.
(2) Sex ratios in the collections varied significantly through time and …
