The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is one of the largest single Federal agencies involved in the planning, design and construction of public waterborne transportation facilities. A critical review of a typical corps of Engineers survey report on the improvements to a harbor should provide an insight to the means of allocating the costs and benefits resulting from government expenditures. The purpose of this paper is to review this process using as a vehicle the proposed improvements to the navigation channel at New London, Connecticut

An extensive compiliation and general evaluation of the literature is presented which describes the temperature interaction with toxicity. Recent literature is summarized and made accessible along with a few generalized relationships such that researchers may design studies in a manner that will increase the utility of their results. A detailed indexing system is employed which makes the information contained in the report accessible by author, toxicant, and text organism. Summary tables of the most pertinent literature are also presented for easy subject retrieval. Laboratory studies indicate dimethyl mercury may be a major product of microbial methylation of inorganic mercury. Although another methylation product, monomethyl mercury, has been extensively studied, the physical, chemical, and biologicl factors affecting the transport and food chain distribution of dimethyl mercury have remained unclear. Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 5th (1972)

The Fifth Vertebrate Pest Conference drew a registered attendance of 239 with an estimated additional 50-75 persons who attended portions of the conference but did not register. As in past conferences, the attendance was made up of individuals having varying interests in vertebrate pest problems from twenty two states plus the District of Columbia. Participants from Canada, Denmark, England, Germany, India and New Zealand contributed greatly to the success of the conference and provided further exchange of information on an international level.

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 5th (1972)

Resistance of commensal rodents to anticoagulant rodenticides is not a new phenomenon. Its confirmed presence in several areas of northern Europe is wel1-documented (Jackson 1969, 1972; Bentley 1969; Lund 1969). Not until 1971 was a similar situation with the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) to be demonstrated in the United States (Jackson et al. 1971). Because it represents an initial occurrence, the site and background observations will be described in some detail. Pollution From Sewage Loading In River And Lakes Downstream From Bemidji, James Ludwig

The deleterious effects and downstream distribution of pollutants from domestic sewage discharged at Bemidji, Minnesota, are examined with reference lo parameters for pollution as defined by the state's Pollution Control Agency (PCA). Periodic overloading of the resort city's sewage treatment plant also is considered, along with problems pertinent to a community upstream of popular vacation facilities on a lake and river system.

For centuries there has been awareness of pollution but it has received dramatic publicity in recent years.

In Western Australia, provisions for its control are written into the Health Act and many other Acts besides the Environmental Protection Act of 1971.

A number of factors have acted worldwide and locally to increase awareness and concern about pollution, and to justify careful examination of the problems it causes.

Reports

A comprehensive environmental study involves lengthy and complex research and this report presents results which are preliminary in nature. The sampling period was limited to the fall (September-November) of 1970 in an area which shows marked seasonality. The results however represent a considerable body of information on the Anclote environment and valuable conclusions can be drawn from them. Included in the reports of each sub-discipline which follow are comments on future objectives, especially those for the coming year.

Reports

The sub-discipline reports which follow represent a considerable body of data on the Anclote environment. In general the results provide additional support for many of the conclusions stated or implied in the Annual Report for 1970 (op. cit.). The considerable diversity and complexity of the Anclote estuary and Anchorage including the major role of the grassbeds is now documented in some detail. The overall results also support previous recommendations concerning power plant construction and design (op. cit.).
