Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Wastewater surveillance has been widely used as a supplemental method to track the community infection levels of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. A gap exists in standardized reporting for fecal indicator concentrations, which can be used to calibrate the primary outcome concentrations from wastewater monitoring for use in epidemiological models. To address this, measurements of fecal indicator concentration among wastewater samples collected from sewers and treatment centers in four counties of Kentucky (N = 650) were examined. Results from the untransformed wastewater data over 4 months of sampling indicated that the fecal indicator concentration of human ribonuclease P (RNase …

This article quantifies Daasanach water insecurity experiences in Northern Kenya, examines how water insecurity is associated with water borrowing and psychosocial stress, and evaluates if water borrowing mitigates the stress from water insecurity. Of 133 households interviewed in 7 communities, 95% were water insecure and 74.4% borrowed water three or more times in the prior month. Regression analyses demonstrate water borrowing frequency moderates the relationship between water insecurity and psychosocial stress. Only those who rarely or never borrowed water reported greater stress with higher water insecurity. The coping mechanism of water borrowing may help blunt water insecurity-related stress.

Application Of Borehole Transient Electromagnetic Method In Detecting The Cross-Border Mining Goaf, Fan Tao, Li Ping, Zhao Zhao, Li Wei, Zhao Rui, Zhang Peng, Yao Weihua, Li Yuteng, Fang Zhe
Coal Geology & Exploration
Cross-border mining in underground coal mines disrupts the order of coal resource development, and has huge hidden safety danger. Accurate detection of goafs caused by cross-border mining and their boundaries is extremely important for safe mining. Conventional mine transient electromagnetic detection methods are susceptible to interference from metal and electromagnetic signals in the roadway, and its detection accuracy is limited, which makes it difficult to meet the needs of accurate interpretation of goaf boundary. For the purpose of solving this problem, a drilling transient electromagnetic method and construction technology for transmitting and receiving signals in drilling is proposed to increase …

Influential Factors Of The Electromagnetic Wave Instrument While Drilling In Coal Seam Horizontal Wells And Resistivity Simulation Calculation, Chen Gang, Zhang Jiguan, Li Quanxin, Liu Zhiyi
Coal Geology & Exploration
In order to figure out the influential factors of the detection by the electromagnetic wave instrument while drilling in coal seam horizontal wells, we studied the impacts of roof and floor surrounding rock resistivity, instrument eccentricity, coal seam borehole collapse and coal seam thickness on the measurement of resistivity through finite element numerical simulation. The resistivity response law of the amplitude ratio and phase difference calculation under the condition of high-resistivity coal rock formation was analyzed. On this basis, a three-layer geological mathematical model was established to simulate the difference between analytical and numerical solutions of the amplitude ratio and …

Optimization Of Surface Directional Wells For Water Control Based On Three-Dimensional Seismic Dynamic Geological Modeling, Lu Ziqing, Gao Yaoquan, Guo Yuan
Coal Geology & Exploration
In the treatment of high-pressure Ordovician limestone water in the coal seam floor, the design and construction optimization of surface directional wells mainly relies on two-dimensional AutoCAD geological drawings. For the avoidance of such problems as low drilling rate and off-target in the target area under complex geological conditions, and to improve the effect of precise targeted water hazard control, a technology for optimizing directional wells for water hazard prevention and control based on seismic dynamic modeling is proposed. By comparing and analyzing the current situation and problems of drilling trajectory design and optimization technology, it is pointed out that …

Application Of Mine-Used Resistivity Monitoring System In Working Face Water Disaster Control, Lu Jingjin, Wang Bingchun, Li Deshan, Duan Jianhua
Coal Geology & Exploration
The geological transparency of water disasters is in urgent need to serve the intelligent and unmanned mining of coal mines. Focused on the water disasters during mining in the working face, the mine-used resistivity monitoring system uses pseudo-random signal transmission and full waveform data acquisition to improve the anti-interference ability of the equipment. Electrode grounding condition consistency correction and monitoring data normalization are used to suppress false anomalies. Time-lapse resistivity imaging is used to identify and extract the abnormal resistivity response of hidden water hazards. The monitoring system is able to estimate the risk of water disasters by monitoring the …
Development And Application Of A Mine-Used Dynamic Azimuth Gamma Instrument While Drilling, Chen Long, Chen Gang, Zhang Jiguan
Development And Application Of A Mine-Used Dynamic Azimuth Gamma Instrument While Drilling, Chen Long, Chen Gang, Zhang Jiguan
Coal Geology & Exploration
Gas drainage borehole along coal seams is the most direct and effective gas control method at present. As a common basis for identifying coal bearing formations, natural gamma can tell whether the borehole trajectory is in the target layer according to the formation radioactivity. However, the existing mine-used gamma logging tools can only carry out sliding drilling measurement, which are not applicable to compound drilling or rotary steering drilling, and cannot meet the working condition of continuous gamma dynamic measurement. On the basis of the analysis of the characteristics of the working conditions of MWD and the principle of gamma …

A Closer Look At Csr Practices In Sustainable Fashion: A Guideline For Apparel Brands, Elline Deogracias, Tracie Tung, Natale Zappia
CSU Journal of Sustainability and Climate Change
While it might be greenwashing that impedes consumers' eco-consumption, the researchers posit that this gap is also due to fashion brands’ weak CSR communication and inconsistent understanding of CSR activities. This study aims to 1) determine the ease with which consumers can navigate sustainable fashion brand websites to find corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, and 2) construct a framework that clearly identifies CSR activities, CSR dimensions, and the business operation stages at which they occur. Website content analyses were conducted on 27 sustainable fashion brands in the United States to investigate their CSR activities. A framework was proposed to better …

Winters in northeastern North America have warmed faster than summers, with impacts on ecosystems and society. Global climate models (GCMs) indicate that winters will continue to warm and lose snow in the future, but uncertainty remains regarding the magnitude of warming. Here, we project future trends in winter indicators under lower and higher climate-warming scenarios based on emission levels across northeastern North America at a fine spatial scale (1/16°) relevant to climate-related decision making. Under both climate scenarios, winters continue to warm with coincident increases in days above freezing, decreases in days with snow cover, and fewer nights below freezing. …

Application Of Gravity Data For Hydrocarbon Exploration Using Machine Learning Assisted Workflow, Oluwafemi Temidayo Alaofin
LSU Master's Theses
Gravity survey has played an essential role in many geoscience fields ever since it was conducted, especially as an early screening tool for subsurface hydrocarbon exploration. With continued improvement in data processing techniques and gravity survey accuracy, in-depth gravity anomaly studies, such as characterization of Bouguer and isostatic residual anomalies, have the potential to delineate prolific regional structures and hydrocarbon basins. In this study, we focus on developing a cost-effective, quick, and computationally efficient screening tool for hydrocarbon exploration using gravity data employing machine learning techniques. Since land-based gravity surveys are often expensive and difficult to obtain in remote places, …

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is a hotspot of earth system research, and understanding its landscape and ecosystem evolution has been hampered by the lack of time-constrained geological records. Geochronological data from 14 loess sites covering a large region in the Tibetan interior show that the TP loess, rather than accumulating during glacial periods, began aggrading at either 13.4 ± 0.4 or 9.9 ± 0.2 ka. An ecological threshold was crossed, when warmer and wetter conditions resulted in increased vegetation cover enabling dust trapping. This dust accumulation model is out of phase with that of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) where …

Heat, Wildfire And Energy Demand: An Examination Of Residential Buildings And Community Equity, Chrissi Argyro Antonopoulos
Dissertations and Theses
Extreme heat and wildfire events are becoming more prolific and exacerbated by climate change, carrying significant implications for environmental and social systems. Residential buildings play a central role in protecting people from heat and pollutant exposure during extreme weather events, but the level of protection varies dramatically depending on building energy efficiency and technology availability. Low-income and communities of color have higher energy burdens compared to affluent populations, and underserved communities often do not have financial resources for, or access to, advanced building technologies. This dissertation explores the impacts of extreme heat and wildfire on residential buildings, focused specifically on …

Investigating The Effectiveness Of A Ground Support System Implemented On Block A: A Case Study Of Southern Africa Metalliferous Mine, Kamogelo Manyelo, Peter Kolapo
Journal of Sustainable Mining
This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the ground support systems that are planned to be implemented on Block A, which will be excavated through the Marikana fault zone. The block of ground being prepared for mining has been physically affected by the presence of the Marikana fault and is therefore geomechanically and geotechnically weaker than the normal stoping conditions on the rest of the shaft. Joint mapping conducted in Block A raiselines indicated that there is a high concentration of shallow dipping joints which are dipping in opposite directions. Such conditions present special challenges in the planned excavations …

Main-Stem Seepage And Base-Flow Recession Time Constants In The Niobrara National Scenic River Basin, Nebraska, 2016–18, Kellan R. Strauch, Philip J. Soeksen
United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications
The Niobrara River of northern Nebraska is a valuable water resource that sustains irrigated agriculture and recreation, as well as a diverse ecosystem. Large-quantity withdrawals from the source aquifer system have the potential to reduce the flow into the river and to adversely affect the free-flowing condition of the Niobrara National Scenic River (NSR). Therefore, to understand the magnitude and characteristics of those flows, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Park Service, began a study to quantify seepage gains/losses along the eastern half of the Niobrara NSR and to create a map characterizing the base-flow …
