Review Of Avian Mortality Due To Collisions With Manmade Structures, Michael L. Avery Nov 1979

Review Of Avian Mortality Due To Collisions With Manmade Structures, Michael L. Avery

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Birds have undoubtedly been colliding with manmade structures ever since humans started building things skyward. The earliest documented instances of collision mortali- ty in this country are from the late 1800's (Coues 1876, Merriam 1885) and the problems continue unabated today. The total avian mortality due to collisions with manmade obstacles is probably greater every year as buildings, towers, chimneys, overhead power lines, and other structures are erected in ever-increasing numbers. Weir (1976) provides an excellent review of bird migration, weather, and collision mortality associated with various types of structures.
The biological significance of collision mortality to any species is …

Effective Use Of Sound To Repel Birds From Industrial Waste Ponds, Lee R. Martin Nov 1979

Effective Use Of Sound To Repel Birds From Industrial Waste Ponds, Lee R. Martin

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Birds are not normally attracted to waste ponds as a food source but, rather, as a place to loaf or rest. This is why sound patterns designed to affect bird behavior act as an effective deterrent to birds in these less attractive sites. The number and species of local or resident birds that frequent the site depend upon the degree of suitability found during their first visit. They can often be discouraged from using a waste pond by eliminating or reducing nearby roosting, loafing, nesting sites, and preferred food sources. Migratory birds present a different problem in that as they …

A New “Parotrap” Adapted From The Mac Trap For Capturing Live Parakeets In The Field, Elsadig Awad Bashir Nov 1979

A New “Parotrap” Adapted From The Mac Trap For Capturing Live Parakeets In The Field, Elsadig Awad Bashir

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

The Rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri [Scopdi]) has been reported (Roberts, 1974; Bashir, 1978; Beg, 1978; and DeGrazio, 1978) as a serious bird pest of maize, sunflower, rape seeds, and fruit crops, particularly citrus, mangoes, and guavas, in Pakistan. Estimated annual losses to maize grown for seed alone amount to about 97,000 tons, worth about Pak. Rs. 150 million or US $15 million (Roberts, 1978). Paradoxically, this handsome bright green parakeet is highly esteemed in the pet trade; and limited numbers are also marketed locally and sometimes exported to neighboring countries, particularly the Arab Gulf Emirates, as caged pets. Traditional control …

Blackbird-Starling Winter Roost Survey In Kentucky And Tennessee, 1977-78, Jon F. Heisterberg Nov 1979

Blackbird-Starling Winter Roost Survey In Kentucky And Tennessee, 1977-78, Jon F. Heisterberg

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

The existence of large winter blackbird-starling roosts has, at least in recent years, presented problems to residents of Kentucky and Tennessee. Farmers in the vicinity of large roosts have reported serious crop and feedlot losses (including transmission of livestock diseases caused by blackbirds and starlings). Aesthetic, human health, and nuisance problems are frequently associated with large roosts. To gain knowledge and understanding of the distribution and ecology of winter roosts so that more effective means of alleviating these problems can be found, the Fish and Wildlife Service periodically conducts roost surveys throughout the United States. Surveys of winter roosts, with …

The Effects Of Sewage Pollution Abatement On Phytoplankton Productivity And Standing Crop In Hillsborough Bay, Florida, City Of Tampa Department Of Sanitary Sewers Oct 1979

The Effects Of Sewage Pollution Abatement On Phytoplankton Productivity And Standing Crop In Hillsborough Bay, Florida, City Of Tampa Department Of Sanitary Sewers

Reports

In September 1976, the City of Tampa initiated a comprehensive monitoring study of the ecology of the phytoplankton community of Hillsborough Bay. Numerous studies elsewhere have shown that phytoplankton are well suited as monitors of trophic state due to their rapid response to changing environmental conditions (Hohn, 1959; Williams, 1964; Margalef, 1968; Welch, 1968; Dunstan, 1975; Taslakain and Hardy, 1976). The present study is designed to relate changes in the phytoplankton community of Hillsborough Bay with the reduced nutrient load entering the Bay from the AWT facility.

Mule Deer Habitat Guidelines, Richard M. Kerr Aug 1979

Mule Deer Habitat Guidelines, Richard M. Kerr

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

The purpose of this Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) Habitat Management Guide is principally to assist BLM managers and biologists in planning for and managing mule deer habitat on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management. For many years Federal land management agencies have made the distinction between the Federal responsibility for managing habitat and the State prerogatives of managing native wild ungulate populations. Certainly the two are inseparably linked. These responsibilities, and up to now "symbiotic relationships", are probably best described succinctly in Title 43 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 24.

Outlook -- The …

Gloucerstermen: Before And After "The Law", William S. Weber May 1979

Gloucerstermen: Before And After "The Law", William S. Weber

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Gloucester has been renowned for its leadership in the fishing industry since colonial days. From the first failure of the Dorchester Company at Stage Fort to the subsequent glories of the schooner fleets, the story has been told in fact, fiction, poetry, and painting. The literature brings to life the beauty of the place, the dangers of the sea,and the character building of those who contested life in the North Atlantic. Most of our recorded material deals with the exploits of Yankees, Portuguese, Scandinavians, and Nova Scotians. Today, and in the immediate past, it is the Italian-American fishermen who dominate …

Charged Membrane, Low Pressure Ultrafiltration To Treat Acid Mine Drainage Waters, Dibakar Bhattacharyya, Robert B. Grieves, Shiela Shelton May 1979

Charged Membrane, Low Pressure Ultrafiltration To Treat Acid Mine Drainage Waters, Dibakar Bhattacharyya, Robert B. Grieves, Shiela Shelton

KWRRI Research Reports

Low-pressure ultrafiltration with negatively-charged, non-cellulosic membranes is shown to be a feasible process in terms of achieving the simultaneous separation of dissolved metals (and sulfate) and of suspended solids from acid mine drainage water. The process is evaluated in terms of the simultaneous achievement of good water flux without membrane fouling and of adequate ultrafiltrate quality at high water recovery for water reuse operation.

At a transmembrane pressure of 5.6 x 105 N/m2, water fluxes in the range of 5.8 x 10-4 cm/sec to 12.5 x 10-4 cm/sec could be obtained at 97% water recovery. …

Development And Validation Test Of A Mule Deer Habitat Rule, Glenn Gephart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A mathematical description of Rocky Mountain mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) habitat was developed and subjected to validation testing using correlation and multiple regression statistical techniques. Data were collected on a central Utah study area, which was divided into mountain and desert regions.

Data on deer utilization and several habitat components from 86 study plots visited in 1976 were used to develop a habitat rule. Data from 46 study plots visited in 1977 were used to test the accuracy of the rule. Deer utilization was determined from pellet group counts on 20 0.001 ha pellet plots at each …

Some Effects Of A Grazer, Hyalella Azteca On Ecosystem Level Properties In Aquatic Microcosms, Martin D. Werner May 1979

Some Effects Of A Grazer, Hyalella Azteca On Ecosystem Level Properties In Aquatic Microcosms, Martin D. Werner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A study to determine some ecosystem level effects of an aquatic invertebrate grazer, Hyalella azteca, was performed in aquatic ix microcosms. Impact of the grazer was assessed in three general areas: 1) inorganic nutrient levels of the microcosm water column, 2) productivity and respiration of the biotic community, and 3) plant community composition in the microcosms.

The grazing amphipod caused inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen (except ammonia) levels to be elevated in the microcosms. The increase was due, at least partially, to excretion of nutrients into the water by the amphipod. The presence of H. azteca did not significantly …

Two Basic Methodological Choices In Wildland Vegetation Inventories: Their Consequences And Implications, Donald Alan Shute May 1979

Two Basic Methodological Choices In Wildland Vegetation Inventories: Their Consequences And Implications, Donald Alan Shute

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In designing inventories of wildland vegetation, two of the many basic methodological choices are: 1) whether data are collected, reduced, and stored in discrete classes or as continuous variables, and 2) whether data are gathered as general purpose variables to bear upon many questions, or as specific purpose variables optimized for only one type of prediction. The effects of these two choices on accuracy of vegetation inventories to predict plant community production were examined by comparing regression models built upon differing sets of independent variables "inventoried" from a common data base. Contrary to expectations, discrete variables of classified community types …

Spectral Signature Studies For Application In Deer Census Using Remote Sensing Techniques, Maran C. Pate

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was performed to determine the spectral signatures of deer and their natural background elements for censusing purposes. Consideration was given to atmospheric transmittance, acceptable flying weather, and terrain. Possible spectral bands between 0.3 and 14.0 μm were obtained (over a pathlength of 1500 feet at an altitude of 5000 feet) based upon atmospheric transmittance using the LOWTRAN 3B computer program. They are: 0.30 - 1.33, 1.49 - 1.79, 2.00 - 2.50, 3.00 - 3.16, 3.38 - 4.10, 4.59 - 5.05, and 8.00 - 13.33 μm, for transmittance greater than 75%. Weather conditions are favorable for flying and taking …

"The Global Hope Is Around": An Incident At Salem Sound, K. W. Mathews Apr 1979

"The Global Hope Is Around": An Incident At Salem Sound, K. W. Mathews

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

On February 6, 1978, in the midst of the worst blizzard to hit the Northeast in 100 years, the 682-foot Greek tanker GLOBAL HOPE with more than 340,000 gallons of oil aboard, dragged her anchor and grounded in Salem Sound, Massachusetts, about 15 miles from downtown Boston. An estimated 83,000 gallons of oil escaped the stricken vessel to be deposited on two of the most historic and picturesque coastlines of Massachusetts. Some 2.4 million dollars were expended from the federal pollution fund in cleanup efforts. This paper relates the chronology of events and examines peculiar problems, planning, and response activities …

Bulletin 3992 - Nitrogenous Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M. G. Mason Apr 1979

Bulletin 3992 - Nitrogenous Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M. G. Mason

Bulletins - 3000 - 3999

Because fertiliser prices continue to rise, it is becoming increasingly important to understand what affects the response to fertilisers by crops.

Among the many factors influencing crop response to nitrogen applications, the most important are the season, soil type, paddock history, time of application and source of nitrogen. Before deciding whether to use nitrogen on a cereal crop, which source to use and at what rate, the farmer needs some understanding of how these factors work.

Vole Management Studies-1978, Jay Mcaninch Feb 1979

Vole Management Studies-1978, Jay Mcaninch

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

Earlier studies at the Cary Arboretum (McAninch, 1978) have described mowing and general cultural management practices as key elements in vole management programs. During the 1978 growing season, studies were initiated to quantify several soil parameters and vegetative elements in fruit orchards and correlate these characteristics to the distribution and abundance of vole populations. Although a great deal of additional orchard-vole data has been generated, only the associations described above will be discussed in this paper.

The Endrin Rpar, Lawrence S. Ebner

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

In July, 1976 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued a "Notice of Rebuttable Presumption Against Registration and Continued Registration of Pesticide Products Containing Endrin" (41 Fed. Reg. 31,316). The purpose of this Notice was to initiate an "RPAR" review to determine whether continued usage of endrin, including the use of endrin for vole control, poses a "substantial question of safety" necessitating cancellation proceedings under Section 6(b) of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act ("FIFRA").
