Perceptions And Realities: When Does 2 + 2 = 5?, Robert M. Timm Feb 1991

Perceptions And Realities: When Does 2 + 2 = 5?, Robert M. Timm

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

The theme of this conference, "Human and Wildlife Interactions: Public Perceptions and Management Realities," suggests to me that the reality of what wildlife managers do is often affected by the public's perception of the problem. In considering animal damage, there's the question of which solutions the public fords appropriate and acceptable. Attitudes and perceptions nowadays, whether correct or based on misinformation, are often translated into policy and law. "Management realities"- why can't we just go ahead and solve the problem the way we want to? After all, we're the scientists and wildlife managers; we know the problem better than anyone. …

Wildlife Damage Management: Policy And Professional Considerations, Harry E. Hodgdon

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

I am honored by the opportunity to be part of this conference and to participate with such a distinguished panel this morning.

Today I have been asked to address policy and professional considerations as they relate to wildlife damage management. As an advocate of professional wildlife management, I will share with you some of the problems and issues that confront, frustrate, and confound us; some sense of the problems that lie ahead; and some thoughts on what we need to do to ensure the wildlife profession remains relevant in the future.

The Wildlife Society endorses the management of wildlife to …

The Quabbin Reservation White-Tailed Deer Impact Management Plan: A Case History, James A. Parkhurst, Robert W. O'Connor Feb 1991

The Quabbin Reservation White-Tailed Deer Impact Management Plan: A Case History, James A. Parkhurst, Robert W. O'Connor

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

Quabbin Reservation, a 22,662-ha watershed management area located in west-central Massachusetts, is experiencing moderate to severe browsing pressure by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on much of the reservation's forested land. In many areas, park-like habitat exists where natural regeneration of the dominant mixed oak (Quercus spp. ) forest has been severely repressed, or outright eliminated, due to repetitive browsing by deer. Understory composition is now dominated by patches of blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), huckleberry (Gayl ussacia baccata), thick carpets of hay-scented fern (Dennstaedtia punctilobula), and grasses. Managers are concerned that as the …

Ecological Considerations In The Management Of Wildlife Damage , Robert K. Swihart Feb 1991

Ecological Considerations In The Management Of Wildlife Damage , Robert K. Swihart

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

Strategies for managing wildlife damage may be divided into 3 broad categories: direct manipulation of populations, manipulation of behavioral or ecological traits of pest species, and manipulation of environmental features. For each of these categories, I review the importance of ecological considerations in determining the effectiveness of management strategies. Proper incorporation of ecological information is important to the success of management strategies in all 3 categories. I predict that future demands will increase for ecologically-based strategies that require minimal intervention, and for integration of management strategies that simultaneously address problems posed by both vertebrate and invertebrate pests. Several recent ecologically-based …

Geographic Variation In Sea Otters, Enhydra Lutris, Don E. Wilson, Michael A. Bogan, Robert L. Brownell Jr., A. M. Burdin, M. K. Maminov

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Univariate and multivariate analyses of 20 skull characters of 304 adult sea otters from throughout the geographic range strongly suggest that three subspecies should be recognized. The nominate form, Enhydra lutris lutris, occurs from the Kuril Islands north to the Commander Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. Individuals of E. l. lutris are characterized by large size and wide skulls with short nasal bones. E. 1. nereis is found along the California coast and off San Nicolas Island, where the species recently has been reintroduced from coastal California. Specimens of E. 1. nereis have narrow skulls with a long …

Animal Damage Management: Responsibilities Of Various Agencies And The Needs For Coordination And Support, Jack H. Berryman

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

It is a pleasure and privilege to again have a part in the Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference and to return to Ithaca and Cornell. The opportunity is much appreciated. I commend the sponsors of the conference and their selection of the theme, "Human and Wildlife Interactions: Public Perceptions and Management Realities"-an increasingly important and compelling topic.

It will be my purpose to discuss the responsibilities of various agencies and stress the obvious imperative of coordination, cooperation, and support. In keeping with the conference theme, I would like to develop the concept that the cooperating agencies should assume a greater …

Sheep And Goat Losses To Predators In The United States, Guy Connolly Feb 1991

Sheep And Goat Losses To Predators In The United States, Guy Connolly

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

This paper analyzes and compares 3 recent estimates of the value of sheep, lambs, and goats killed by predators in the United States. The estimates, by Pearson (1986a,b), the General Accounting Office (GAO 1990), and the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS 1991), varied from $18 million to $59.7 million annually due to differences in scope, assumptions, data, and estimation methods of the 3 studies. Pearson's and NASS's estimates of the value of sheep and lambs lost to predators in 17 western states totaled $38.3 million and $18.3 million in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The difference between these estimates was attributed …

Thermal Desorption Of Organic Contaminant From Sand Using A Continuous Feed Rotary Kiln, Hsien-Tsung Chern Jan 1991

Thermal Desorption Of Organic Contaminant From Sand Using A Continuous Feed Rotary Kiln, Hsien-Tsung Chern

Theses

The purpose of this research was to determine the feasibility of removing organic contaminants from sand by thermal desorption. A continuous feed rotary kiln was designed and constructed to study the thermal desorption behavior of organic contaminant from sand with respect to temperature and residence time, and to develop a mathematical model that will describe this desorption behavior. The model will allow prediction of the desorption rate of an organic contaminant in larger scale rotary kiln desorption system over temperature at a known set of residence time.

In this experiment, sand was uniformly contaminated with a known amount of organic …

Thermal Desorption Of Contaminated Soils, Hsi-Ming Sung Jan 1991

Thermal Desorption Of Contaminated Soils, Hsi-Ming Sung

Theses

A new method by employing the heating probe for the in-situ cleanup of soils that are contaminated with volatile organic hazardous substances is explored. This investigation is a laboratory simulation that was aimed to evaluate the feasibility of desorption of volatile organic compoumds (VOCs) from soil, and to determine the efficiency of the heating probe for maximum desorption.

Two organic compounds, Trichloroethylene, Carbon tetrachloride, were selected as simulants. The experimental results demonstrate that the removal efficiency range from 97.65% to >99.95% of Trichloroethylene and 98.14% to >99.95% of Carbon tetrachloride can be recovered for a 24 hour interval with a …

Analysis Of Chemical Contaminants In Tissue Samples From Two Species Of Fish, Michael David Reive Jan 1991

Analysis Of Chemical Contaminants In Tissue Samples From Two Species Of Fish, Michael David Reive

Theses

Interaction of marine species with chemical pollutants within the marine ecosystem is extremely complex and difficult to interpret. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the effect of an exposure of treated municipal wastewater on winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) and striped bass (Morone saxatilis). Fish from two locations were exposed to different concentrations of wastewater. Half of the fish from each tank were sacrificed, and the remaining fish were given a depuration period in unpolluted water. Tissue samples were composited, soxhlet extracted and passed through a florisil cleanup column. Gas chromatography, was used to analyze for hexachlorobenzene, hexachlorobutadiene, Aroclor …

The Oil Pollution Act Of 1990: A Solution Or A Problem?, Kevin M. Carey Jan 1991

The Oil Pollution Act Of 1990: A Solution Or A Problem?, Kevin M. Carey

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The signing of the Oil Pollution Control Act of 1990, Public law 101-380, (OPA 90) on August 18, 1990 was a significant landmark in the struggle to control pollution by oil and the activities associated with the recovery, transport, and refinement of oil and associated products in the territorial waters of the United States, and was long overdue. The aftermath of the Exxon Valdez spill, which was the impetus that finally prodded Congress to pass the oil spill legislation that had been under consideration for years, has been filled with controversy over how the spill occurred, how the clean up …

Impacts Of The Unclos Iii Consent Regime On U. S. Marine Scientific Research, 1982-1989, Matthew Patrick Murphy Jan 1991

Impacts Of The Unclos Iii Consent Regime On U. S. Marine Scientific Research, 1982-1989, Matthew Patrick Murphy

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The 1982 Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III) has given states jurisdiction over unprecedented scopes of ocean space. Marine scientific research is among the activities under coastal state control. This thesis examines five possible areas of impact of coastal state control on United States research programs. These are: 1. research which was denied outright, 2. reasons for denials, 3. research which was delayed, 4. the extent to which researchers avoid requests in the waters of restrictive states, and 5. the level of interest among UNOLS institutions in cooperative arrangements with foreign governments. The international legal framework for …

The Siia: A Mechanism For Addressing Pollution Problems Plaguing New Jersey's Coastal Zone, Laurie J. Sands

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

New Jersey has been plagued in recent years by beach closures resulting from elevated bacteria levels after rainfall events. The Sewage Infrastructure Improvement Act (SIIA) was adopted to correct these problems by addressing both point and nonpoint sources of pollution found in discharges of stormwater. However, there are problems with the SIIA such as overly burdensome requirements, limited resources and lack of future funding and direction. This research identifies these problems and examines existing State and federal legislation to find the necessary components to correct these concerns. The results show that by pursuing a legislative amendment to the SIIA, redistributing …

Long-Term Decline In Freshwater Mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of The Western Basin Of Lake Erie, Thomas F. Nalepa, Bruce A. Manny, James C. Roth, Samuel C. Mozley, Donald W. Schloesser

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Long-term trends in the abundance of unionids in the western basin of Lake Erie were examined from data collected at 17 stations in 1961, 1972, and 1982. The mean number of unionids at these stations declined over this time period, decreasing from 10 m-2 in 1961, to 6 m-2 in 1972, down to 4 m-2 in 1982. This decline in abundance was reflected in the decrease in the number of stations where mussels were found; unionids were found at 16 of the 17 stations in 1961, but at only 6 stations in 1982. Reasons for the decrease …

13.4.6. Strategies For Water Level Manipulations In Moist-Soil Systems, Leigh H. Fredrickson Jan 1991

13.4.6. Strategies For Water Level Manipulations In Moist-Soil Systems, Leigh H. Fredrickson

Waterfowl Management Handbook

Water level manipulations are one of the most effective tools in wetland management, provided fluctuations are well-timed and controlled. Manipulations are most effective on sites with (1) a dependable water supply, (2) an elevation gradient that permits complete water coverage at desired depths over a majority of the site, and (3) the proper type of water control structures that enable water to be supplied, distributed, and discharged effectively at desired rates. The size and location of structures are important, but timing, speed, and duration of drawdowns and flooding also have important effects on plant composition, plant production, and avian use. …

Planting Trees To Control Salinity, Nick Schofield, Phil Scott Jan 1991

Planting Trees To Control Salinity, Nick Schofield, Phil Scott

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Dense tree plantings covering at least 30 per cent of cleared land can lower groundwater levels by two metres or more in 10 years from the time of planting. This sizeable drop can be expected at sites receiving 700 to 800 mm of rain a year. Research by the Water Authority of Western Australia shows the most promising strategy when using trees is to put dense plantings on the discharge zone and on lower to midslopes. This strategy is successful where groundwaters contain less than 30,000 milligrams per litre total soluble salts (TSS).

This article discusses research in the 450 …

Trees And Livestock : A Productive Co-Existence, Richard Moore Jan 1991

Trees And Livestock : A Productive Co-Existence, Richard Moore

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Trees, as part of farming can help to combat land degradation problems and produce a good economic return from timber at the same time. For example, there is now clear evidence that planting trees can help combat salinity by lowering water-table levels. Trees can also substantially improve overall farm productivity by providing shelter for pastures and livestock. The challenge is to find practical and economical methods of integrating trees and farming. A combination of widely-spaced trees and livestock is one promising method. This article describes the benefits of this type of agroforestry to farmers, suitable locations and how to practice …

A Study Of Periphyton, Sediment And Diatom Community Structure As Monitors Of Heavy Metal Pollution In The Embarras River And Brushy Fork, David L. Vaultonburg

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate periphyton (diatom) and sediment heavy metal content and diatom community structure as potential monitors of heavy metal pollution in the upper reaches of the Embarras River system. The study was initiated due to recent industrialization in the area which could potentially contribute to the present heavy metal burden of Brushy Fork and the Embarras River. These streams are already subject to agricultural runoff, wastewater plant effluent, landfill leachate and other miscellaneous urban and highway runoff. The Embarras River system drains an area of approximately 2800 square miles in 11 east-central Illinois counties …
