Reproductive Success Of Grasshopper Sparrows In Relation To Edge, Jennifer M. Delisle, Julie A. Savidge Sep 1996

Reproductive Success Of Grasshopper Sparrows In Relation To Edge, Jennifer M. Delisle, Julie A. Savidge

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Using an index based on observations of breeding behaviors, we estimated reproductive success of 31 territorial grasshopper sparrows (Ammodramus savannarum) on Conservation Reserve Program fields in southeast Nebraska. Reproductive success was 52%, and no difference was detected between birds holding interior (>100 m from the edge) vs. edge territories. However, grasshopper sparrows appeared to avoid nesting within 50 m of edge habitats. Territories ranged from 0.36-1.24 ha, and territory size did not differ between successful and unsuccessful males.

Fisheries Research Report No 105 - The Western Rock Lobster Fishery 1986/87 To 1990/91, C. F. Chubb, E. H. Barker, R. S. Brown

Fisheries Research Reports

This report on the western rock lobster (Panulirus cygnus, George 1962) fishery covers the five seasons 1986/87 to 1990/91 and is the latest in a series of reports on the State's largest and most valuable fishery. While more detailed data bases exist, these reports form a historical record of basic data for use by both industry and research workers, now and in the future. Catch and fishing effort in the seasons (1986/87 to 1990/91) varied between 8500 and 12300 tonnes and 11.3 and 12.8 million pot lifts respectively. This report provides detail on the distribution of catches and fishing effort; …

The Real Cost Of Beef: A Monetary Assessment Of The Environmental Degradation Caused By Beef Production, Carolyn Babcock Jul 1996

The Real Cost Of Beef: A Monetary Assessment Of The Environmental Degradation Caused By Beef Production, Carolyn Babcock

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The environmental degradation caused by beef production is severe. The current literature assesses the ecological damage, but falls short of assigning a per pound dollar amount to reflect the real cost of beef. In the United States, most of the environmental focus has been centered around the use of public lands for grazing and the grazing fee the government considers appropriate. The fee covers the maintenance of the grazing program, which includes maintenance of the actual land. This paper will concentrate on beef-related environmental degradation and select specific damage for monetary valuation.

Development Of A Forestry, Fish, And Wildlife Center, W. Daniel Edge, Edward Jensen, Nancy Boriack Jun 1996

Development Of A Forestry, Fish, And Wildlife Center, W. Daniel Edge, Edward Jensen, Nancy Boriack

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

Public concerns for stewardship and conservation of biological diversity have caused a reduction in the timber supply in the Pacific Northwest on federal lands. This reduction in the availability of federal timber has resulted in an intensification of management activities on private forest lands. The reduced timber supply has also increased timber prices to the point that many nonindustrial private woodland owners, who previously were not interested in selling timber, have entered the market. This intensification of management activities on the private forest base has resulted in additional increased concerns for fish and wildlife species. Reliable and readily accessible information …

A fee-fishing operation is a business, a recreational people-oriented business, and not just a method to market fish.

Finding Your Song, John Munn Jun 1996

Finding Your Song, John Munn

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

Planet Earth is a magnificent mix of things that make "living" possible. Delicate mixtures of chemicals, minerals, gases, and waters bathe us. Earth is just the right distance from our sun to provide the energy, driving all the systems—necessary for life—as we know it. Some refer to this as the Great Balance of Life.

How well are these systems balanced, and what would it take for the Planet to lose its ability to create and sustain Life?

We are all aware of the long list of environmental problems facing us. We are also aware of the scientific uncertainties that make …

Interdisciplinary And Multidisciplinary Public Education By Combining Consensus-Based Planning And Environmental Analysis, Sherman Swanson, Robert Wilson

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

In extension, we educate people to improve their lives. In natural resources extension, we educate people to improve life. Resolving issues often does this. In natural resources extension we also resolve issues to educate people.
As educators we steer clear of some issues to avoid the hazards. We may refrain from choosing sides. When we choose sides, we often tarnish the perceived objectivity of our University. Yet issues provide the need for knowledge, the teachable moments, and the set and focus that translates knowledge exposure into learning. When issues involve common resources, shared or conflicting interests, complications from complex or …

Multimedia Programs And New Computer Technologies: A Look At Texas 4-H Wildlife School Enrichment Programs, Billy Higginbotham

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

4-H multimedia school enrichment modules offer excellent wildlife educational opportunities for elementary students as we near the 21st century. Modules consisting of hands-on displays, interactive computer programs, videos, lesson plan activities, and pre/post-test components serve to reinforce information relative to topical issues in the wildlife arena. In Texas, modules have been developed entitled "The White-tailed Deer," "Wildlife Success Stories and Endangered Species," and "Something's Fishy." These modules and their duplicates are used as components of county 4-H programs and serve to deliver wildlife information to an ethnically and socio-economically diverse audience of third and fourth graders. Teacher committees are instrumental …

Fluorescent Labeling Technique And Dna Amplification By The Polymerase Chain Reaction For The Detection Of Human Malaria Parasites., Maryam Mohd Ai-Shaikh Omer Ai-Ameri

Theses

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and fluorescence staining based diagnosis of Malaria infection was attempted. 187 samples in two groups: 135 and 52 patients Attending the Malaria Clinic (preventive Medicine and Al-Ain Hospital, UAE) were Collected Two PCR systems; using small subunit ribosomal RNA (ssrRNA) based primers And merozoite surface antigen (MSP) based primers were assessed, taking the Giemsa Stain as the reference test.

The re sults of PCR using the merozoite surface antigen (MSP) primers specific for Pfalciparum, proved to be specific and accurate. These results were analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE) and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (page) stained …

Oxidation Of Isobutane And Isobutene Reaction Pathways And Detailed Mechanism, Chiung-Ju Chen May 1996

Oxidation Of Isobutane And Isobutene Reaction Pathways And Detailed Mechanism, Chiung-Ju Chen

Theses

A reaction mechanism consisting of 248 elementary reactions and 138 species has been developed to model experimental systems - decomposition of 2,2,3,3 tetramethylbutane in the presence of oxygen and oxidation of isobutene. This elementary reaction mechanism based on two important reaction systems: tert-butyl radical with O2 and allylic isobutenyl radical with O2, plus their subsystems, such as isobutene + HO2, isobutene + OH and allylic isobuteny1hydroxy + O2. Thermochernical kinetic parameters are developed for each elementary reaction and a chemical activation kinetic analysis using quantum RiceRamsperger-Kassel (QRRK) theory for k(E) and modified strong …
