This assignment invites students to examine how section headers function as rhetorical and organizational tools in research writing by analyzing headers generated by ChatGPT. Using a shared sample text, students prompt generative AI to produce multiple sets of headers that foreground different analytical emphases (e.g., race or language). Students then compare these AI-generated headers to identify how shifts in emphasis reshape the implied structure, focus, and interpretation of a text. Shakespeare and Identity in a Divided World examines some of the most pressing issues about identity and so-called identity politics in the highly polarized twenty-first century. The book uses Shakespeare’s plays and the history of sixteenth and seventeenth-century England to discuss gender, race, mental health, disability, and fatness as they were perceived in Shakespeare’s age and then considers ways in which audiences, readers, and classrooms might use them to think about those same topics in the twenty-first century.

In 1891, newspapers across America printed a story about witches in the Appalachian Mountains and the alleged powers they possessed to control their small farming community. The article was scathing in accusation and ultimately contributed to continued othering of the women profiled, increasing their visible vulnerabilities of class, gender, and societal status. Despite an implied familiarity with the region, the article was published with initials for its byline, an act that simultaneously identified the author to locals as historian Eva Grant while offering her anonymized national protection as a subject expert. This thesis examines several Old English texts to understand how power is portrayed in literature relating to women and their positions as wives, mothers, and daughters. Looking at women characters in Beowulf, Elene, “The Wife’s Lament,” Juliana, and Judith through a New Historicist lens, this thesis attempts to better understand the cultural and social expectations for women in power in Anglo-Saxon England, c. 1000. These women are portrayed as socially intelligent and politically active figures in their communities. The story of King Arthur has been told time and time again, emerging most recently as a major literary fascination for fantasy writers. The huge body of Arthurian literature published in the 20th century has been well-documented. Raymond H. Thompson’s The Return From Avalon surveys nearly two hundred works published from 1882 to 1983, noting trends and common themes that emerge over this collection. Baruch Hochman and Ilja Wachs describe the negative impacts of orphanhood in Dickens: The Orphan Condition. This thesis applies just war theory to Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games trilogy, arguing that while the districts' rebellion satisfies the principles of jus ad bellum (justice in going to war), it systematically violates jus in bello (justice in the conduct of war) and jus post bellum (justice after war), and ultimately replicates the oppressive structures of the Capitol it sought to overthrow.

This thesis examines how Victorian and early twentieth-century British literature imagines queer childhood as a spatial condition that generates alternative temporalities, rather than as a stable identity. Focusing on The Well of Loneliness (1928), Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871), and Peter Pan (1904) and Peter and Wendy (1911), this project argues that queer childhood emerges within literary environments that actively produce misalignment with normative developmental logics of innocence, growth, and reproductive futurity. This thesis explores the baptismal imagery across two of Marilynne Robinson’s novels, Housekeeping and Lila. The hermeneutic used to understand baptism is based on some of the works of Rowan Williams, Mircea Eliade, and Northrop Frye. In its death and rebirth function, baptism is understood for its connection to the formation of self and identity. Baptism is also explored as a means of community initiation. Further, connecting these two baptismal functions, this thesis also looks at the role community plays in the formation of that identity. Ornamental flowering plants have been instrumental symbols in literature across all times and cultures. I’m examining why flowers are such perceptual stimulants, sexual symbols, and literary agents. Through the lens of Joela Jacob’s term “phytopoetics,” which describes the impact of plant life on the human imagination and culture; botany; and literary scholarship, I will look closely at this phenomenon in The Peony Pavilion, a Chinese opera from 1598 which features the first recognized complex and convincing female protagonist in world literature.
