Dystopian Young Adult Literature As Waypoints To Censorship Across Time And Space, Shelby Boehm, Savannah Bean
Dystopian Young Adult Literature As Waypoints To Censorship Across Time And Space, Shelby Boehm, Savannah Bean
Faculty Publications – English
We advocate for the reading of young adult literature (YAL) as a means for justice-oriented education, and we also recognize how the recent surge in challenges to youth-centered texts in the U.S. attempts to limit such work in classrooms. In response, we wondered about the ways in which YAL offers pathways for critically framing and situating global concerns, such as censorship, in time and space as a means of entering public conversations on issues. In this article, we offer waypoints as a critical reading framework for approaching sociopolitical issues in YAL as gateways for shifts in perspectives, orientations, and actions …
“The Direful Spectacle Of The Wrack”: Teaching Against Colonialism Through Shipwrecks And Shakespeare, Sara A. Rich
“The Direful Spectacle Of The Wrack”: Teaching Against Colonialism Through Shipwrecks And Shakespeare, Sara A. Rich
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
It has become increasingly apparent that anti-colonial and anti-racist pedagogies are necessary in higher education classrooms, and honors education as an experimental zone is an ideal place to test ideas that can be taken into the wider university community. Honors professors epitomize the teacher-scholar model, and this paper presents a six-year trajectory of anti-colonial pedagogy coupled with original interdisciplinary research in the social sciences, arts, and humanities. Bringing canonical Shakespeare into conversation with historical shipwrecks and their aftermath, students learn how The Tempest was written at a pivotal point in history, coincidentally situated in the same year as the earliest …
Differentially Unwell: On Mimi Khúc's "Dear Elia", Seo-Young J. Chu
Differentially Unwell: On Mimi Khúc's "Dear Elia", Seo-Young J. Chu
Publications and Research
[...] Inviting readers to reclaim the stigma of unwellness and collectively to "tend to our unwellness, together," Khúc approaches unwellness as a crucial resource for subverting the "wellness and unwellness" dichotomy entirely. After all, the opposite of "wellness" is not "unwellness"; the opposite of "wellness" does not exist. The opposition itself is an artificial framework, one that reductively harms more than it dialogically helps. We need to move away from these simplistic dualisms, Khúc suggests, and towards more generous, trauma-informed epistemologies. [...]
The Message Behind The Aesthetic: Intersections Of Class And Sexuality In Oscar Wilde's The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Matthew J. Milotakis
The Message Behind The Aesthetic: Intersections Of Class And Sexuality In Oscar Wilde's The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Matthew J. Milotakis
English Theses
Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891) follows the life of a doomed high-class gay man named Dorian while revealing a discussion of art and the imitation of life itself. This paper reveals the parallels between characters like Dorian and Lord Henry's life to Wilde himself and how they all move through society as high-class gay men. The intersectionality of both identities provides a social commentary on societal policing, compulsory heterosexuality, and the villainization of queerness through the lives of men who lived in 19th-century England with challenges like the Criminal Amendment Act of 1885 and laws against sodomy. …

Frankenstein As Therapy: Mary Shelley's Journey Through Loss And Trauma, Laylo Makhkamdjanova
Frankenstein As Therapy: Mary Shelley's Journey Through Loss And Trauma, Laylo Makhkamdjanova
English Theses
This paper explores Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as a therapeutic diary through which she processes her losses and traumas. It will draw parallels between Shelley's life experiences: loss of a mother; loss of children; relationships throughout her life and the characters in Frankenstein. These parallels will demonstrate a deep analysis of how her writing had reflected important themes such as mother lessness, abandonment, grief, and isolation. When examining transformations between the different editions the paper argues that Frankenstein is not simply a gothic masterpiece, but it is a path through which Shelley worked to process her inner conflicts that were caused …

Wise Blood Through The Lens Of Reader Response Theory, Hannah Rose Horton Stewart
Wise Blood Through The Lens Of Reader Response Theory, Hannah Rose Horton Stewart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Flannery O’Connor’s 1952 novel, Wise Blood, is a frequently misunderstood classic. While O’Connor is very rarely associated with reader response theory, its framework offers a way to more fully appreciate O’Connor as an author and Wise Blood as a novel while addressing aspects of critics’ confusion. The objective of this study is to consider a previously under-researched area of O’Connor scholarship while offering greater clarity to Wise Blood. By considering O’Connor’s personal nonfiction writing and the text of her first novel through the lens of reader response scholars such as Wolfgang Iser, this study offers a call towards viewing …

Embracing Ai In English Composition: Insights And Innovations In Hybrid Pedagogical Practices, James Hutson, Daniel Plate, Kadence Berry
Faculty Scholarship
In the rapidly evolving landscape of English composition education, the integration of AI writing tools like ChatGPT and Claude 2.0 has marked a significant shift in pedagogical practices. A mixed-method study conducted in Fall 2023 across three sections, including one English Composition I and two English Composition II courses, provides insightful revelations. The study, comprising 28 student respondents, delved into the impact of AI tools through surveys, analysis of writing artifacts, and a best practices guide developed by an honors student. Initially, the study observed a notable anxiety and mistrust among students regarding the use of AI in writing. However, …

Since its inception in 1912, Poetry magazine has been widely regarded as a premier resource for modern poetry and poets. Published in Chicago as Poetry: a Magazine of Verse, its legacy continues today through the Poetry Foundation, a superlative online resource for seekers of poets, poems, and random lines needing identification. A less immediately recognizable legacy is that of its founder, Harriet Monroe (1860–1936), one of those fin de siècle “intellectual women” typically dismissed as a contradiction in terms. But Monroe was a force to be reckoned with, and this beautifully crafted volume participates in the recuperation of a life …

Identifying Youth Appeals In Alcohol Alternative Social Media Content Through Framing, Melina Oneal
Identifying Youth Appeals In Alcohol Alternative Social Media Content Through Framing, Melina Oneal
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Proposed regulations for alcohol advertising prevent beverage companies from targeting people under the legal drinking age. However, similar regulations for alcohol alternative beverages are less explored, which could allow alcohol alternative products to create awareness for alcoholic beverages among youth. Alcohol alternatives beverages, including no-alcohol and low-alcohol products, are increasing in popularity and can function as compliments to alcoholic products to decrease the total alcohol volume consumed or as substitutes for alcoholic products. Framing theory can be operationalized through the Content Appealing to Youth Index, an index of content elements found in research literature to be appealing to youth, to …
Disney Adult Or Disney Cult?: Observing The Effects And Perceptions Of Transmedia Storytelling Onto Fandom, Sara Spradley
Disney Adult Or Disney Cult?: Observing The Effects And Perceptions Of Transmedia Storytelling Onto Fandom, Sara Spradley
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Transmedia storytelling is the vehicle for narratives to become immersive to their audience through different modalities. The Walt Disney Company employs this form of storytelling by placing any one of its films in the context of attractions and live-action performances, or vice-versa, creating a convergent culture that will follow these products through every medium. This project views transmedia storytelling used by the Walt Disney Company as the reasoning for the Disney Adults' fandom interest in interacting with Disney products. Through the use of discourse analysis, and digital ethnography I will observe this relationship between the use of transmedia storytelling, fandom …
Performing Presidential Age: "It's About How Old Your Ideas Are", Valerie Barnes Lipscomb
Performing Presidential Age: "It's About How Old Your Ideas Are", Valerie Barnes Lipscomb
English Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications
During a February surprise appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, President Joe Biden whipped out his trademark aviator sunglasses and traded quips with Meyers about a supposed conspiracy with Taylor Swift, much to the delight of the younger live audience. The next day, reviews were mixed about whether the president was trying too hard or did in fact manage to look hipper. To look younger. While US presidential nominees have been consciously performing their campaigns for decades, during this cycle, considering age as a performance has been especially prominent. Commentators and critics have specifically addressed the careful staging …
"Lord, What Fools These Mortals Be:" Ambiguity In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet And A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hannah Murphy
"Lord, What Fools These Mortals Be:" Ambiguity In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet And A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hannah Murphy
Scripps Senior Theses
My thesis is focused on how and why ambiguity/double meanings within the language of Shakespeare plays occurs, and how this can be adapted into a ballet format as there is no verbal component. As well as why this aspect of the plays is so vital to the portrayal of the characters that to remove it would be to severely reduce the impact of the story. It focuses specifically on the plays and ballets of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Romeo and Juliet, with the NYC Ballet versions of both as a reference.
Autopathography Across Media: Trauma And Fluid Embodied Subjectivity, He (Kristen) Shen
Autopathography Across Media: Trauma And Fluid Embodied Subjectivity, He (Kristen) Shen
Honors Theses
Illness memoirs with first-person point of view have gained more attention in recent years among medical sociologists and anthropologists. Different from traditional “case histories”written by doctors that are in danger of ignoring patients’ voices, autopathograhical works delineate narrators’ transformative experiences of persons to patients, emphasizing the importance of gaining social understanding of illness. Focusing on three works within the category of autopathography across genres and media forms in the late 1950s and contemporary periods, The Cancer Journals (1980) written by Audre Lorde, The Collected Schizophrenias (2019) written by Esmé Weijun Wang, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) directed …

A Reflective Study Of Textbook-Centered Ela Curricular Resources, Autumn Frykholm Damann
Masters Theses
It is essential for English Language Arts educators to understand the multiple ways in which they can make the classroom an inclusive environment for all students. This study examines the racist ideas deeply ingrained within texts taught in an American literature-centered secondary English Language Arts course and explains one way for teachers and professional learning communities (PLCs) to survey and closely scrutinize one’s text choices for racist and overall biased messaging. Using qualitative content analysis of the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Collections textbook for Grade 11, I analyze the texts from the first two units I taught as a first-year teacher …
The Thought Of Getting Lost In Space, James Keffer
The Thought Of Getting Lost In Space, James Keffer
Theses
"The Thought of Getting Lost in Space" is a poetry collection that explores nostalgic memories and connections of relationships, whether they are new or old and forgotten, and attempts to weave them together in hopes of forming constellations. There are hesitations and fears, such as rejection, failing, or even doubting oneself, when reaching out to other people. Sometimes we even get lost within ourselves and forget how to self-love our own bodies. Constellations are these amazing and beautiful wonders in the night sky that depict stories of old, yet stories that still teach lessons. The most influential people are storytellers. …
Slouching Towards Causality: Does Our Writing Center Tutoring Work?, Dennis Paoli, Jack Kenigsberg
Slouching Towards Causality: Does Our Writing Center Tutoring Work?, Dennis Paoli, Jack Kenigsberg
The Writing Center Journal
Replicable, aggregable, data-supported (RAD) research has become standard in writing center studies. Choice of research question is determined by local conditions and exigencies, often influenced by institutional assessment policy and national mandates. The methodology of choice in most writing center research is qualitative inquiry, though quasi-experimental quantitative studies, with their inherently difficult protocols and ethical problems, persist in their effort to address the question fundamental to writing center labor: Does writing center tutoring improve student writing? In a quasi-experiment applying propensity score matching to a sample of student users of the Rockowitz Writing Center at Hunter College of the City …

Review: Writing Centers & Racial Justice: A Guidebook For Critical Praxis, Faith Thompson
The Writing Center Journal
Writing Centers & Racial Justice seeks to answer the question many writing center directors seeking to enact antiracism have: “But how do we DO it?” This edited collection is not a how-to guide but offers strategies, suggestions, and even curriculum for writing center administration. It is broken down into five parts, each tackling a different component of writing center work, such as hiring and retention practices as well as tutor education. It calls on readers to look outside the writing center and begin to expand this work through their institutions and communities, as well as directly calling out professional organizations …
Review: A Working Model For Contingent Faculty, Courtney L. Werner
Review: A Working Model For Contingent Faculty, Courtney L. Werner
The Writing Center Journal
In his book A Working Model for Contingent Faculty, Robert Samuels presents multiple ideas for helping contingent faculty organize to gain equity on campus: in their careers, working conditions, and pay. Samuels critiques current prominent, negative discourse on contingent faculty, offering instead ways to emphasize contingent faculty’s diverse and positive experiences and opportunities. I offer additional insights spurred from Samuels’s ideas, including connecting with student government and finding ways to make writing center work and research more public and apparent to institutional stakeholders (e.g., students, faculty, donors, administrators, boards/trustees).

"A collection of stories inspired by the author's father; from his earlier childhood in Italy, to his emigration to the US around age 10 and to his adjustment in finding a balance as an Italian-American teen in the 50s, it includes his meeting / falling in love with the author's American mother and the ensuing circumstances of the culture clash from their relationship. This collection includes 5 historical fiction stories that are based heavily on factual stories, which are chronologically connected by 9 non-fiction pieces."
