This thesis is an exploration of the Neo-Humanistic themes in the works of Irving Babbit. The theories and criticism of this author may be studied through two approaches. A reading of his books and essays, which are copious and diversified, gives to the careful reader a firsthand introduction to his ideas. He has influenced the thinking of many literary men. From them, both his opponents and proponents, one may further study his theories. Much reading from both of these sources has been done by the writer, and the method used in arriving at conclusions has been largely one of comparisons.

It is the purpose of this study to show the influence of higher criticism of the Bible upon the life and works of George Eliot. The critical attitude toward the Bible was the first disrupting influence felt by the brilliant mind of George Elliot, and “it created a change amounting to a revolution in Miss Evans's life. A Survey Of The Life And Novels Of David Graham Phillips, Abraham Feldman

In the opening chapters I have tried to explain the development of Phillips' outlook. Then, I have endeavored to establish by analysis of every novel that he published just what is ephemeral and what is permanent in his work. The opinions of all important judges of the books, as well as the decision of many insignificant critics who reflect contemporary literary appetites, have been examined and balanced by each other. Sketches of the background against which Phillips struggled, the material and moral forces and cries of his age, are given with necessary details.
