Symbolic Texture In A Selection Of The Short Fictions Of D.H. Lawrence, Robert L. Stallman

Symbolic texture, a combination of two terms outlined above, uses images generally thought of as textural to form groups of symbols that support the main theme of a story and provide for its underlying unit. This element or quality is in the work; it is not the feeling or "radiance" arising from the reader's reception of the work.

The Los Pastores, or Shepherd's Play is the traditional Nativity play which is performed yearly during the Christmas season in those areas where the Spanish-speaking folk still hold to the traditional pattern of celebrating the Nochebuena or Christmas Eve. This genre of folk drama extends over a wide area of the American Southwest: in New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Arizona, California, and parts of Mexico. Particularly in New Mexico in the more or less isolated but rapidly changing Spanish-speaking communities, the Spanish miracle play has managed to survive as an expression of sincere, religious devotion.

The dramatic poem entitled Empedocles on Etna, which is set in ancient Greece, was first published anonymously in 1852 when Matthew Arnold was thirty years of age. It was contained in a slender volume called Empedocles on Etna and Other Poems by A. Previous to that, he had published only one collection of verse. This appeared in 1849 with the title The Strayed Reveller and Other Poems.

The department has given encouragement to numerous research projects and summer workshops held for the purpose of finding an answer to the problem of emphasizing moral and spiritual values in public education. The concern for this need has informally become known as the “Kentucky Movement.”

The purpose of studying the Victorian women in poetry has been to find some relation between the historical woman and the literary woman. Louise E. Rorabacher in a similar thesis considered only the novels of the day (Victorian Women in Life and Fiction, University of Illinois, 1942). Her purpose was to determine the validity of the concept of the woman in the novel in terms of historical fact. The obvious weakness of the project is that all these two hundred and forty-five short stories were selected as the best of each year by one person, Martha Foley. In the one hundred fifty years since Charles Lamb published what might be termed his first formal criticism, opinions of his stature as a critic have waxed and waned. His critical writing has been attached as the "blasphemies of a poor manic," and praised as possibly the greatest applied criticism in English. It ia a generally accepted fact among critics that George Crabbe was a realist. It will be the purpose of this paper to examine this conclusion for its validity. More exactly, I shall compare the poetry of Crabbe with the historical records of his era and measure how closely Crabbe came to reproducing, realistically, his own times. The paper is really a study of Crabbe's realism as reflected in his poetry with a view toward questioning the verdict of the critics.
