Despite the great number of published works that deal with English prosody or the more restricted subject of versification, there is a noticeable scarcity of studies that describe the practices of individual poets. One of the more apparent reasons for the meager number of versification studies is the instability of the basic criteria by which a poem is examined. Prosodists quite simply find it difficult to establish concrete principles of scansion that are acceptable to all other prosodists. The purpose of this study of Shakespeare's use of letters is twofold. First, representative plays will be examined to determine some of the ways in which letters contributed to such important elements as plot structure, character delineation, creation of atmosphere, heightening of suspense, or a combination of two or more of these and possibly other uses. In addition, the letters will be studied for the evidence they may furnish in themselves, of the development of Shakespeare's dramatic technique and artistry.

I have little of that Dionysian faith which supposes that there are ways of "breaking through” to some ideal reality beyond the limits of the individual skin. We are all prisoners in individual cages of bones. It is difficult to even tap out a message to the people who have "known" us for years, and to communicate with strangers is a near impossibility. Yet it is one of poetry functions to attempt just that, for no poet worth his salt can, like Ivan Ivanich of Chekhov's "Gooseberries," murmur, "God forgive us sinners" and go to sleep.

The method I have followed in writing this dissertation has been to examine critically in chronological order those poems which in my judgment most significantly reveal the different characteristics of Conrad Aiken’s poetry. The method of critical examination has been empirical. The poems have been read and studied without reference to a strict literary theory. Those qualities which are present in Aiken’s poetry have been stated and then usually supported with quotations.
