Criticism Of Material Success In The American Novel, Neil Bowen Porterfield

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Those authors who criticized material success as a proper or rewarding goal in life were not moving with the grain of American opinion. The novelists who did examine the goals of American life did not condemn material success immediately, but instead their thoughts grew by gradual stages. These novels are grouped into three stages for discussion in this thesis. The first group is drawn from authors who were sceptics of success. These novels, although finding areas of concern in the American goal of success and the self-made man, still held out redeeming features as generally admirable. Arthur Mervyn discovers that …

Inhumanism, Robinson Jeffers' philosophical solution to the problems of modern society, is highly individualistic and reflects this author's pessimistic attitude toward the present and the future of the species. His definition, stated in prose as: " ... a shifting of emphasis and significance from man to not-man; the rejection of human solipsism and the recognition of the transhuman magnificence.", presents a cosmography made up of three divisions: man, not-man, and the transhuman magnificence. The English language has undergone many changes since its evolution from the Teutonic dialects. It has become simplified in many ways; one area of simplification is in the second person pronoun. Originally nine different forms of the Old English pronoun of address appeared, while today only three {you, your, yours) remain. Although ambiguity can and does result from only one form in the nominative and objective case (i.e., whether you is singular or plural in reference), the English-speaking people have reduced the pronoun to the same nominative and objective form as a means of linguistic economy. It is the purpose of this study to discuss Dryden's adaptations of Shakespeare's The Tempest, Antony and Cleopatra, and Troilus and Cressida. As a background for this study, Restoration drama will be discussed from the standpoint of the following criteria: relationship to Elizabethan drama; Restoration audiences, theaters, and fashion; adaptations, primarily of Shakespeare; D’Avenant, Dryden, and heroic drama; and finally, English opera in the Restoration period. The first of the five chapters in this discussion will be concerned with the items listed above. Lawrence Durrell has written The Alexandria Quartet in a form he considers modern and which he has labeled a "continuum." In this continuum the first three novels of the quartet occur at the same place in time and treat the same characters and incidents with the point of view and interpretation changing in each of the novels; the fourth novel then constitutes a sequel. Throughout this general framework of abstract time established by the continuum, the motif of the grotesque is woven, constantly evident, attempting to force an awareness of the sordid aspects of humanity as well as those of …

The earliest conceptions I had of The Ceremony of Innocence were almost purely structural and centered around the desire to create a completely autonomous experience, dependent on its own specific laws, and not a derivation from, or a representation of, psychological reality. At the same time, I wanted to design a theatrical spectacle which would be as amusing and enjoyable as a puppet show. Both of these concerns led far from the usual concerns of similitude and psychological realism. Certainly, every reader of Samson Agonistes who is at all familiar with the circumstances of Milton's life, his thought, and the history of his times has been attracted by obvious parallels between 'the poet and certain aspects or his dramatic creation, and he may understandably assume that the presentation or the sufferings of Samson constitute intentional, hidden autobiography. To assume even the obvious, however, is something too blithely done. A little research into this area of Miltoniana will reveal to him that scholarly opinion concerning Samson Agonistes and autobiography is greatly varied and that some scholars are inclined not only …
