The subject matter has changed in an attempt to meet the purposes of the author, and I believe that these stales or purposes of the author fit into four main groups—the observer, the philosopher, the preacher, and the mystic.

The Huntsville Literary Association was founded in 1967 to provide a community for writers, readers, and artists through workshops, readings, and educational programs. One of their key contributions is the literary magazine titled POEM which showcases original writings from both established and emerging writers. This issue highlights the work of Anton N. Nyerges and Gary Pitsenberger. It also features Conrad Aiken's manuscript "The Morning Song of Land Zero" as cover art.

Winfield Townley Scott, who published ten volumes of poetry between 1937 and 1967, has been highly praised by noted poets and critics, but he has yet to gain much popular recognition. For one thing, he wrote personal and lyric poetry in a time when the dominant movement in poetry was an escape from personality. For another, he devoted his lifetime to refining his poetry, until a casual reader may miss the subtle music and variations worked from a direct, simple language. The traditional ballad, the genre of the above poetry, has been a subject of much controversy and speculation, especially regarding its origin. The problem of origin is not likely to be solved unless much more evidence is found. Among the many theories are communal authorship, and individual poet; humble and oral origin, and sophisticated and literary origin. Studies of linguistics, of ballad refrain, and of carole continue the attempt to discover ballad genesis.
