Bayard Taylor's The Prophet: Mormonism As Literary Taboo; Calaveras County Comes Of Age; The Erosion Of Belief In The Poetry Of Clinton F. Larson, Thomas D. Schwartz

Theses and Dissertations

The three papers included in this thesis reflect my development as a graduate student during the course of my master's program at Brigham Young Universtiy. I came to Brigham Young University interested in creative writing and developed a love for research and criticism. My work in nineteenth century American literature led to the first two papers. Both deal with literary history, the first narrow in scope, devoted to a study of the significance of a single play, the second broad in scope, devoted to a study of the unifying thread of anti-sentimentalism in the writings of the major American realists. …

The Ancient Mariner's Conversion : Coleridge, Religion, And The Rime, Meta Margaret Lale Jan 1972

The Ancient Mariner's Conversion : Coleridge, Religion, And The Rime, Meta Margaret Lale

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

My thesis that Coleridge employed universal images of the supernatural and traditional Christian symbols to illustrate the Mariner’s religious conversion in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The basis for this proposition is that Coleridge made religion the Rime’s theme. The following validations of the religious theme proposal will be offered in these chapters: (1) The religious theme synthesizes two popular but unsatisfactory thematic statements: “estrangement” and “sacramental vision.”; (2) Coleridge’s philosophical system is founded upon the postulation of a supernatural reality. The Mariner’s conversion may be seen as his change from Aristotelian conceptualism (which recognizes one reality - nature) …

The Echo Structure Of Death As A Regenerative Force In Clea, The Fourth Book Of Lawrence Durrel's [Sic] Alexandria Quartet, Mareta Suydam Tucker Jan 1972

The Echo Structure Of Death As A Regenerative Force In Clea, The Fourth Book Of Lawrence Durrel's [Sic] Alexandria Quartet, Mareta Suydam Tucker

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

One of the principal techniques used by Lawrence Durrell in creating the rich and varied Alexandria Quartet is echo structure. Echo structures of similar construction (ether directly stated or implied) suffuse the text with additional meanings and achieve thematic significance and completeness.

The symbolism of death and a new birth, or rebirth is a dominant means of conveying this in the Quartet, and particularly in Clea, its fourth and final book. Echo structure is created by the writer’s establishing actions, images, archetypes, allusions and characters in an early portion of the Quartet and generally suspending that entity until changed or …

A Study On How The Male And Female Are Portrayed In Children’S Literature, Diane Jean Reed Jan 1972

A Study On How The Male And Female Are Portrayed In Children’S Literature, Diane Jean Reed

Graduate Research Papers

To the majority of Americans, women's liberation is a common term among most circles. Just recently another group is capturing the headlines and will be gaining more support with this publicity. This group has coined the name "Feminists on children's Media." Their attacks are becoming greater as more parents, librarians, and concerned citizens become actively involved in the way women and men are stereotyped in both juvenile literature and school textbooks. Previously, critics had concentrated on the intermediate level of reading, while now, more are becoming interested in picture books and beginning readers.

Aldo Leopold's "Land Ethic": An Ecological Extension Of Albert Schweitzer's "Reverence For Life", John Lee Weaver

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

As a member of the world community, and in the process of becoming a professional ecologist, I have begun a search for a personal ecological ethic to guide my actions. Two of the paths I have taken in my search are Albert Schweitzer's Reverence for Life ethic and Aldo Leopold's Land Ethic. They are relevant because each has extended the scope of ethics beyond Homo Sapiens. Their thoughts, with similarities and dissimilarities, form herein my travels.

The Machiavellian Influence Manifested In Christopher Marlowe's Tamburlaine The Great And The Jew Of Malta, Carol L. Janssen Jan 1972

The Machiavellian Influence Manifested In Christopher Marlowe's Tamburlaine The Great And The Jew Of Malta, Carol L. Janssen

Masters Theses

The concepts developed by Niccolo Machiavelli and presented in The Prince exerted a profound influence on the dramatists of the Elizabethan age. However, before they were incorporated into Elizabethan dramas, these ideas were perverted and disparaged by Innocent Gentillet, Gabriel Harvey, Father Parsons, and others. The result of this perversion is that Machiavelli's original ideas are barely recognizable, at times, in the Elizabethan interpretations, of those ideas.

The key ideas of Machiavelli are these: the ruled majority of the people are passive, weak, mutable, inconsistent, simple, and ungrateful, so they can be easily subjected and controlled by the Prince; the …

T. S. Eliot's Theory Of Dramatic Communication, Janelle G. Reinelt Jan 1972

T. S. Eliot's Theory Of Dramatic Communication, Janelle G. Reinelt

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Thomas Stearns Eliot wrote only seven dramatic works, which include the unfinished fragments Sweeny Agonistes and the pageant play, The Rock. These works show the ways Eliot put into practice his own theories about the relationship of drama and verse. Although their relative merits are the subject of considerable critical controversy, each play affords a rich theatrical experience. This study attempts to assess the real value of Eliot’s work and seeks to explore the relationship between his avowed intentions to communicate in the theatre, and the finished product of his labors. Necessarily, we must examine his views on art, religion, …

Paradise Regained: An Intellectual Drama Of The Nature Of Being And Freedom, Michael Biehl Jan 1972

Paradise Regained: An Intellectual Drama Of The Nature Of Being And Freedom, Michael Biehl

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The major problem confronting a student of Paradise Regained is to relate theology, philosophy, and drama. Critics, in the main, have either oversimplified the issues, or have given lopsided interpretations of the poem, emphasizing one aspect to the detriment of others of significance. Consequently, as noted in the Introduction, our study examines Paradise Regained's central theological and philosophical equation of Being and Freedom. Furthermore, our mode of approach is a running commentary and analysis to help us trace the poem's developing intellectual drama. Book I sets the stage for the conflict of ideas. During the first council with his cohorts, …

I chose to write an annotated bibliography for my research paper for I felt that I needed some knowledge of the kind of book material I will be working with in a secondary school library. This would give me a chance to look over and read many books that I have been unfamiliar with until now.

The Concept Of Salvation In The Fiction Of Flannery O’Connor, Janet Grant Jan 1972

The Concept Of Salvation In The Fiction Of Flannery O’Connor, Janet Grant

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The thesis for which this serves as an abstract consists of a critical investigation of the concept of salvation as seen in the fiction of Flannery O'Connor. To the casual reader, O'Connor's stories provide entertainment, but on more careful perusal, the reader perceives a certain pattern in each story which points to the attainment of salvation. O'Connor is a Catholic writer who enjoys a universal appeal because of the concepts with which she deals . The desire for salvation is not limited to any one religion; rather, the concept of a spiritual existence after death is espoused by many religions. …

The Short Story: An Expression Of The Creative Imperative, An Introduction, Mary Muses Woodlee Dec 1971

The Short Story: An Expression Of The Creative Imperative, An Introduction, Mary Muses Woodlee

English Language and Literature ETDs

Upon reflection, the creative process appears to find a comprehensible analysis in the consideration of linguistics. The psychology of deep structure as used in the analysis of grammar may be extended to the ultimate meaning of words, tense, mode, even case, giving to language a physical reality. The meaning of a word, or in the case of a verb, of its tense and mode, is thus found to carry within itself a deep sense of its aptitude and function, being in fact, the only word or verb that could be applied specifically when its deep structure is fully understood. As …

Clarissa And Richardson's Ethical Beliefs: An Application Of A Theory, Vincent A. Silvestri Dec 1971

Clarissa And Richardson's Ethical Beliefs: An Application Of A Theory, Vincent A. Silvestri

Master's Essays (1922 - )

In his illuminating book, Fiction and the Shape of Belief, Sheldon Sacks postulates a thesis that is designed to lead a reader to catch a glimpse at the ethical beliefs of the novelist as embodied in the novel itself. Generations of intelligent and sensitive men and women who have read and still continue to read Richardson provide cogent testimony that he somehow did include his moral beliefs, opinions, and prejudices in his novels without seriously detracting from their artistic effect.

Landscape Imagery In Shelley's Major Poetry: The Forest And Related Settings, Ingrid J. Parker Dec 1971

Landscape Imagery In Shelley's Major Poetry: The Forest And Related Settings, Ingrid J. Parker

English Language and Literature ETDs

The repeated use of the journey motif and the extended descriptions of landscape in Shelley's major poems suggest that journey and landscape are either allegorical or symbolic, or both. Furthermore, biographical evidence indicates that Shelley was particularly attracted to quest literature, and that he responded strongly to specific modes of travelling and to particular types of landscape.

The analysis of landscape imagery in Shelley's shorter poems reveals that natural settings such as forests, caves, bodies of water, and mountains are habitually used as images for the human mind. The journey through landscape thus becomes logically a mental journey. It is …
