The Portrayal Of Blacks In Children’S Literature, Ilene Rewerts Jan 1972

The Portrayal Of Blacks In Children’S Literature, Ilene Rewerts

Graduate Research Papers

With the current emphasis on civil rights and the equality of all people, much attention has been given to the minorities in this country. One such minority, the American Negro population, is beginning to demand the rights that they have been denied for centuries. Generations of black Americans have lived without recognition--almost invisibly--in America. They have been separated from whites socially and culturally.

As the Negro population has emerged from oblivion, and the attitudes towards these people have changed, educators have begun to evaluate the portrayal of blacks in literature. Literature has always been a mirror of the times, and …

The Mannerist Painter And Donne : A Correlation Of The Arts, Christine Steinbach Jan 1972

The Mannerist Painter And Donne : A Correlation Of The Arts, Christine Steinbach

Honors Theses

There is a certain equality of painting and poetry expressed by Horace in his descriptive phrase ut pictura poesis. The implication is that the arts are practically interchangeable, one may describe the other, and the genius of each arises from the same source. Some of the best evidences of similar inspiration and perception within these two arts can be illustrated through a comparison of Italian Mannerist painting and Metaphysical poetry as embodied in various works of John Donne. Although these works are separated by chronological time and geographical location, they are, nevertheless, the product of mutual attitudes and stress common …

Critical Analysis Of Mother Goose, Jeanne Opperman Jan 1972

Critical Analysis Of Mother Goose, Jeanne Opperman

Graduate Research Papers

Nursery rhymes have been considered trifles until comparatively recent times and consequently were never taken too seriously. It has only been with the increased interest in the science of folk-lore that they have begun to attract attention and their true purpose and meaning discovered.

My curiosity about the origin of Mother Goose rhymes · came through a course taken in children's literature. I wrote a paper at that time on some of my findings and observations. This paper is an enlargement and updating of that project including more information from historical sources, a study of selected foreign editions and some …

Myths And Legends In The Stories Of Eudora Welty, Robert Keith Brower Jan 1972

Myths And Legends In The Stories Of Eudora Welty, Robert Keith Brower

Master's Theses

Wright Morris suggests that in The Territory Ahead that the American writer's imagination has been crippled by the nostalgia that drives it to a preoccupation with the mythic past. Like any other generalization, there are several glaring exceptions to this statement, and one of the most obvious of these exceptions ca be found in the case of Eudora Welty. Miss Welty has continually exhibited a great knowledge of mythology and American folklore, and has utilized this knowledge extensively in her stories. However, it is safe to say that rather than being crippled, Miss Welty's imagination has been greatly enhanced and …

Only With The Heart -- A Consideration Of Love In The Novels Of John Steinbeck, Dorthy S. Cummings Jan 1972

Only With The Heart -- A Consideration Of Love In The Novels Of John Steinbeck, Dorthy S. Cummings

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The consistency with which John Steinbeck evaluated his characters by revealing the nature of their commitments indicates the importance of love as a motivational and thematic force in his work. In every novel that he wrote from 1933 to 1961, the characters were defined by the extent to which they loved and were loved. They were enlarged by belonging to and being responsible for the thing they loved. They were diminished by rejection or failure in love. Love, in the Steinbeck novels, included a wide variety of commitments that shared, in addition to a common function in the lives of …

Description Of Background For The Children’S Book, Ice Cream Next Summer, Elaine Rose Govern Jan 1972

Description Of Background For The Children’S Book, Ice Cream Next Summer, Elaine Rose Govern

Graduate Research Papers

Ice Cream Next Summer is not meant to be a trip in nostalgia, although it may well serve that purpose for a reader with first hand experience of ice houses, country stores and their period in American history. It is meant to be, as it was for the author, an investigation into a different time and mood of a slower rural Iowa, a discovery of an out-dated occupational task.

William Faulkner: Innocence, Idiots, And A Moral Order For Yoknapatawpha, Joseph Scott Drips Jan 1972

William Faulkner: Innocence, Idiots, And A Moral Order For Yoknapatawpha, Joseph Scott Drips

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi includes characters and situations that are often described as unexpected, abnormal, and even grotesque. Isaac Snopes of The Hamlet, Benjy Compson of The Sound and the Fury, and Jim Bond of Absalom, Absalom! represent three of the most extreme character portrayals found within the works of William Faulkner. They are described as idiots. This paper views these idiots as a continued development of a character type. To complete this study the idiots are described: (1) through the theme of innocence, (2) as a part of the moral order depicted in Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, and (3) …

Sherwood Anderson And The Art Of American Autobiography, Linda S. Bergmann Jan 1972

Sherwood Anderson And The Art Of American Autobiography, Linda S. Bergmann

Honors Papers

This paper will consider autobiography from these various perspectives in search of a means of evaluation of autobiography in terms of the restrictions and potentials of the genre. The intention, the truth, the theme, or the formal value--alone-- are insufficient for a valid conception of the genre. Their interaction is what makes some autobiographies more than historical curiosities--what make them successful and enduring works of art. This study of American autobiography will focus on Sherwood Anderson's autobiography and autobiographical novel, A Storyteller's Story and Tar. Anderson deals with the familiar themes of American literature and American autobiography : the individual …

The Group Theatre: A Reflection Of The Theatre In The Thirties, Abby Eiferman Schor Jan 1972

The Group Theatre: A Reflection Of The Theatre In The Thirties, Abby Eiferman Schor

Honors Papers

Sing us a song of social significance Or you can sing until you're blue Let meaning shine in every line Or we won't love you. This snatch of lyrics, sung in the International Ladies Garment Workers. Union revue Pins and Needles of 1937 captures an important aspect of the literary spirit of the 1930's. This decade was marked by a tendency of artists towards political and social commitment, a time when the reconstruction of American society and the menace of Fascism was a cause celebre to which artists could rally. American artists had always been interested in changing society, or …

The Boy Who Made Dragonfly Manuscripts

This is the second draft and the first manuscript edited by both the publisher and Hillerman. It was typed on a typewriter and was heavily edited. The chapter designations were added in mid-paragraph, suggesting that the chapters were natural breaks in the book, rather than preset chapters.

Character Development In Representative Victorian Novels, George T. Mitchell Jan 1972

Character Development In Representative Victorian Novels, George T. Mitchell

All Master's Theses

This is a study of how characters are developed in five

representative Victorian novels. Character is studied on the

basis of a moral stance which motivates actions. Because the

concept of the moral stance is primarily dependent upon the

individual character, the characters in this paper are studied

in relation to themselves. There are many events and relationships

in the novels which are not discussed here , aspects of

the respective narratives which would illumine other interpretations

but which are irrelevant to this particular study.

Qualities Of Prose, Victoria Louise Stokes Jan 1972

Qualities Of Prose, Victoria Louise Stokes

All Master's Theses

This paper identifies four qualities of prose: unity of content, cohesion, continuation, and tone. After examining handbook definitions, the need for new definitions of these qualities was evident. Each quality is defined and a type of catalogue of representative examples is offered to aid the definitions.

The qualities of prose are part of the overall act of communication and are offered only as theory. No attempt has been made to demonstrate how to write prose which would include the qualities.
