C.S. Lewis And The Transcendence Of Irony, Roland M. Kawano
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Takes off from H.L. Weatherby’s study of Lewis’s and Eliot’s relations to medieval literature, in suggesting that Lewis’s response to the modern gap between idea and image is to transcend irony in his own work. Discusses four aspects of Lewis: “the doctrine of stock responses, the reaction of Lewis to the doctrine of the unchanging human heart, the impersonal theory, and his experiment with various ways of reading."

"Fair Terms & A Villain's Mind:" Shylock In Perspective, Montreva Calhoun
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
While The Merchant of Venice has long been one of Shakespeare's most popular plays, it has also been one of the most controversial with Shylock being the hub of the conflict. Critics have long been arguing whether this great character is a tragic hero or a larger-than-life villain. Those opting for the first often believe the playwright guilty of anti-semitism, and those following the latter consider Shylock the embodiment of evil. The first chapter reveals the many sources for both …

The major purposes of this research were to analyze the portrayal of emotionally disturbed characters in books which adolescents are reading and to attempt to determine if this portrayal was realistic and balanced in terms of the entire group of books. A panel of experts was used to obtain a sample of ten books. The portrayals of twelve characters from these ten books were analyzed using an inventory of twelve elements which were derived from traditional stereotypes of the emotionally disturbed. The results of this analysis suggested that, for the most part, a realistic and generally balanced portrayal of emotionally …
