Tom Robbins — A Playful Prophet, Thomas Dov Frazer
Tom Robbins — A Playful Prophet, Thomas Dov Frazer
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
This thesis analyses the first three novels of Tom Robbins - Another Roadside Attraction, Even Cowgirls Get The Blues and Still Life With Woodpecker. Robbins' personal story which leads to the publication of his first novel is explored as well as how he fits into the American literary tradition. The author investigates how Robbins novels examine in a variety of ways the profound implications of contemporary physics for the moral and intellectual foundations of the Western world. It also examines Robbins uncanny ability to reflect in his novels the changing American moods from counterculture to activism to narcissism. Finally the …
The Duke Of Dark Corners: Toward An Interpretation Of Measure For Measure's Duke Vincento, Jan Funk
The Duke Of Dark Corners: Toward An Interpretation Of Measure For Measure's Duke Vincento, Jan Funk
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The multiple and widely varying interpretations of Duke Vincentio in Shakespeare's Measure for Measure can be reconciled and made into a consistent interpretation by the application of a framework consisting of both literary and Elizabethan conventions as well as a view of comedy that accepts the comic function of movement toward identity as comedy's goal. Duke Vincentio is the comic drive in the play. His behavioral motives are based on his sincere concern for his constituency and his courageous use of his power during a time when reform is vital. The morally equivocal means he sometimes employs are justified by …
O. Henry’S Use Of Stereotypes In His New York City Stories: An Example Of The Utilization Of Folklore In Literature, Martin Ostrofsky
O. Henry’S Use Of Stereotypes In His New York City Stories: An Example Of The Utilization Of Folklore In Literature, Martin Ostrofsky
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Stereotyping is a folkloristic process which permits people to reduce the complexities of the real world into simplified, abstract terms. O. Henry one of America’s most popular short story writers, made generous use of stereotypes in his stories. By examining O. Henry’s use of stereotypes, insight may be gained into the essential role which folklore often plays in creative literature. Stereotypes greatly influence the composition, function and reception of O. Henry’s work. O. Henry’s personal habits and circumstances demanded that he produce a prolific stream of short stories which would have the greatest popular appeal. Clever manipulation of stereotypes permitted …
Dickens' Consideration Of The Victorian Woman: A Study Of Dickens' Use Of Serialization In The Development Of Agnes Wickfield And Little Dorrit, Julie Weaver
Theses & Honors Papers
In 1816, Charles Dickens was engaged to compose the text for a series of illustrations . The project evolved into a novel, The Pickwick Papers, which was published in twenty consecutive monthly installments. This method of publication was inexpensive, thus providing access to novels for a wide ranee of the public . Furthermore , the serial format mad e the reader an active part of the novel by sparking anticipation of both plot and character development from month to month. In Dickens at Work , John Butt and Kathleen Tillotson point out that "To the reader the system meant not …

Caroline Gordon: A Sense Of Place, Frances Perdue
Caroline Gordon: A Sense Of Place, Frances Perdue
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Place, as it transcends the immediate setting of a work, is an essential element of Caroline Gordon’s early novels. She looks to the past and to the region of her birth to focus on the traditional South. She shows her characters’ changing attitudes toward the Cavalier Myth, a view that promotes the value of the land, the patriarchal family, and an anachronistic code of honor. To them, the South is unique, and they resist all efforts to change this “given social order.” However, Gordon begins to recognize that change is inevitable. Thus, she reveals her characters’ succumbing to the rising …
A China Diary, William Rewak
A China Diary, William Rewak
English
When I was first called and asked to be a member of the Catholic University Delegation to China to investigate educational exchange programs, I hesitated. I'm not a very good traveler on other people's terms: tours and delegations are pre-determined, they leave little elbow room, and I'm not the most seasoned adventurer in the world. Anything beyond pasta, enchiladas, and roast beef I am immediately suspicious of; and I had heard about the rigors of Chinese travel.
But I was goaded into it by my Jesuit brothers; and I also knew that if I passed up this chance to take …

Self Awareness Of Sin As The Cause Of Death In Four Of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales, Kathryn Louise Estep
Self Awareness Of Sin As The Cause Of Death In Four Of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales, Kathryn Louise Estep
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This study of four of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales presents a distinct view of a character's self awareness of sin and his refusal to seek repentance as being the cause of his death. The message here is that of the Fall. "The Great Carbuncle," "The Hollow of the Three Hills," "Lady Eleanore's Mantle," and "The Ambitious Guest" demonstrate that man is sinful and in need of redemption just as the Bible demonstrates man's fallen state and need for forgiveness through Christ, the second Adam. In these tales characters act out of selfish pride and become aware of their transgressions just …

Scholarly Guest of Honor address, Mythcon 12. Discusses references to elves and fairies in the poetry of Lewis. Faerie provides a romantic streak in nature, and/or psychological symbols of escape, in the early poems. Faerie and Christianity vie in “The Queen of Drum,” and Faerie is virtually absent from his later poems.
