A Journey Inward : Initiation In Katherine Anne Porter's Miranda Stories, Anne Lobdell Sep 1985

A Journey Inward : Initiation In Katherine Anne Porter's Miranda Stories, Anne Lobdell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Tracing the initiation motif in Katharine Anne Porter's "Miranda stories" uncovers her maturing protagonist's search for order and personal truth. Miranda's inward journey ultimately leads not to nihilism and despair, as some critics suggest, but to an honest and courageous affirmation of the independent spirit.

Porter's fiction involving Miranda and her family background reveal varying stages of this maturing that, together with parallel theories of initiation, fall into critic Mordecai Marcus' paradigm of initiation types. The "tentative" initiation stories only brush the child Miranda's awareness and deal primarily with the external world. They include "The Circus," marking an "emotional" initiation …

Mythcon 16 - A Kinship Of Dancers: Interplay In The Lives And Works Of Lewis, Tolkien, And Williams, The Mythopoeic Society

Mythcon Programs

Welcome to Mythcon XVI! This event is the result of fourteen years of hope and vision on the part of Society Founder Glen GoodKnight. But hope and vision only get you so far. Two years ago, our all-volunteer committee began the process of bringing Mythcon to the Midwest. In that time, we have learned to appreciate Murphy's insights, particularly when he asserts that nothing is as easy as it looks. Mythcon XVI has been a lot of work but in every sense, it's been a labor of love and we're glad you are here to be a part of it.

Superior Instants: Religious Concerns In The Poetry Of Emily Dickinson, Elisabeth Buckner Jul 1985

Superior Instants: Religious Concerns In The Poetry Of Emily Dickinson, Elisabeth Buckner

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

When I decided to write a thesis on Emily Dickinson's poetry, my intention was to show that she did, indeed, implement a concrete philosophy into her poetry. However, after several months of research, I realized that this poet's philosophy was ongoing and sometimes inconsistent. Emily Dickinson never discovered the answers to all of her religious and spiritual questions although she devoted her entire life to that pursuit. What Dickinson did discover was that orthodox religion had no place in her heart or mind and she must make her own choices where God was concerned. Immortality was an intense fascination to …

Robert A. Heinlein: A Philosophical Novelist, Marie Guthrie Jul 1985

Robert A. Heinlein: A Philosophical Novelist, Marie Guthrie

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Robert A. Heinlein is a key figure in the development of American science fiction. What makes his contribution unique is his emphasis on philosophical speculation. Heinlein's program is based on rationality as a vital element to salvation. Although the importance of rationality is an aspect of many schools of philosophy particular value may be gained by comparing Heinlein's system with the philosophy of Plotinus. An examination of Heinlein's key works (Stranger in a Strange Land. The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, Time Enough For Love, The Number of the Beast--. And various short stories I provides ample evidence to support …

Abortion: Three Comments, William Rewak Jul 1985

Abortion: Three Comments, William Rewak

English

One of the most debated issues in modern life, and one that speaks to our deepest understanding of who God is and how life proceeds from God, is the issue of abortion. Thus the appropriateness of the preceding articles-both of them excellent essays on the subject. There are, however, three comments I would like to make concerning the argumentation in the articles: one comment on Father Fagothey's article and two on Father Burtchaell's.

Address By Margaret Wolfit, Margaret Wolfit

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

'The Quiet Conquest' is the title of the Huguenot exhibition celebrating Huguenot Heritage Year - 300 years since the revoking of the Edict of Nantes - currently showing at the London Museum.

The origins and earliest application of the term Huguenot, we are told, have always been and remain somewhat obscure. The word may derive from 'Eidgenoss', meaning confederal, a word used in Geneva where John Calvin and many Huguenots settled. Other explanations for the word belong to the world of myths - a 16th century Catholic apologist, for example, apparently suggested that John Calvin nightly summoned a devil named …

In The Age Of Obsession, Ivor E. Cooper Jun 1985

In The Age Of Obsession, Ivor E. Cooper

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In Writing In the Age of Obsession the author has attempted to create a novel which examines a number of important issues. By writing the narrative in the first person he has been able to pursue these themes through the development of Daniel Rackham, the main character.

The author chose the late nineteenth century as the setting because the period was one of dynamic and often revolutionary change. Within such a time period as this, when an old era is passing away and a new era is beginning, we are able to witness phenomena which can only be precipitated by …

An Evening With Steve Race

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

Take a mixture of gentle humour, superb professionalism, excellent timing and a love of music of many a Music' programme has been a much loved public figure for many years, but if his audience at the Arts Centre were expecting the same pleasant, relaxed man on stage, they were probably delighted to discover that he is even more pleasant and more relaxed than they had anticipated. From the moment he arrived on stage until he left it, he had his audience in the palm of his hand. They reacted instantly to him, and the pleasure this gave to him probably …

Lady Chatterly's Lover: The Grove Press Publication Of The Unexpurgated Text, Raymond T. Caffrey Apr 1985

Lady Chatterly's Lover: The Grove Press Publication Of The Unexpurgated Text, Raymond T. Caffrey

The Courier

This article details the excruciating process that author D. H. Lawrence went through to get his novel Lady Chatterly's Lover published in the United States. It was censored multiple times, cited as being obscene and offensive, while Lawrence and his lawyers tried to build the case that the novel possessed literary merit. The research used to write this article was based on findings in the Syracuse Univeristy Special Collections.

The Pastoral Tradition In Film, Andrew J. Ford Apr 1985

The Pastoral Tradition In Film, Andrew J. Ford

Honors Theses

The pastoral, whether in painting, music, literature, or film, has always attempted to capture that fleeting moment in history, real or unreal, where man is autonomous. The pastoral life occurs only after man has gained a considerable amount of control over nature and before he has found himself controlled by his fellow man or by those common evils made real and specific by civilization. In other words, the pastoral tries to capture or create that period in history where man has conquered the wilderness in some major way, usually by farming or animal herding, but has not yet become involved …

James Joyce's Use Of Topography In Ulysses, Mary Beth Delea Apr 1985

James Joyce's Use Of Topography In Ulysses, Mary Beth Delea

Honors Theses

James Joyce's Ulysses stands out as the most conscientiously topographical novel ever written, according to the authors of Literary Landscapes of the British Isles. The Dublin which Joyce recreates is the Dublin of physical reality, painstakingly transposed so as to elicit exact details of the city. This detailed locale plays an important role in the novel, revealing many of Joyce's ingenious artistic purposes. The topography of Dublin appears the beginning of Ulysses and is significant until the end of the novel, influencing three major aspects of the work. The aspects referred to include the personality of Dublin as well as …

Book Review: "A Delicious Effervescence Of The Mind", Gabriel Woolf, Rosalind Shanks Mar 1985

Book Review: "A Delicious Effervescence Of The Mind", Gabriel Woolf, Rosalind Shanks

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

"A delicious effervescence of the mind"? It is not a quality that one immediately associates with George Eliot, whose name and countenance promise more of the sturdier attributes and less of the "fizz". Yet in a brilliant recital by Gabriel Wooir and Rosalind Shanks, many sparkling bubbles of wit sprang to life. Her love of jokes was recalled from books she laughed over in childhood, and the lively amusement she gleaned from the foibles of folk emerged from the perhaps unlikely pages of "Janet's Repentance". Bartle Massey from Adam Bede was not unexpected, but less predictable was the quick, dry …
