Towards A Definition Of Science Fantasy, Carl D. Malmgren Jan 1988

Towards A Definition Of Science Fantasy, Carl D. Malmgren

English Faculty Publications

Science Fiction and fantasy have a locus of intersection, science fantasy. an unstable narrative form which combines features from each genre. A science-fantasy world is one in which the characters or settings or events presuppose at least one clear violation of natural law or scientific necessity, but which explicitly provides an organized or scientific explanation for that violation and which grounds its discourse in a scientific episteme. Science fantasy, like Science Fiction, assumes an orderly universe with regular laws, but, like fantasy, contains at least one explicit reversal of current natural law. An examination of two science-fantasy texts, Fritz Leiber's …

A Contextualized Grammar Proficiency Test Using Informal Spoken English, Sally Wellenbrock Hinrich Jan 1988

A Contextualized Grammar Proficiency Test Using Informal Spoken English, Sally Wellenbrock Hinrich

Dissertations and Theses

Intensive college-level ESL programs typically focus on building students' academic skills in English. Yet many ESL students leave the intensive programs only to find that they cannot sufficiently comprehend conversations with native English-speaking classmates or understand freshman-level lectures. While the students frequently perceive the problem as relating to the rapid speech tempo used by native speakers, an integral part of the comprehension problem is the pervasive use of modified forms of English, commonly called reductions, contractions, and assimilations.

The present research investigates whether comprehension of certain modified forms of spoken informal English can be used to measure students' level of …

Up Here, Donald Schenker Jan 1988

Up Here, Donald Schenker

Ahsahta Press

At a time when much of the literary world was concerned with the “urban heartbeat,” Schenker, in his sequence of poems “Hurd’s Gulch, 1986–1987,” was delighting in the minutiae and particular of the natural world. Be it quail, cows, or oak, small, precise details shimmer under Schenker’s examination. In his sequence “Austin Creek, 1969–1970,” Schenker uses a narrative of the momentary; an immediate vision or flash, like a car passing on a dark highway. The poems of Austin Creek inhabit that space on the edge of rural towns—longer lines and generous detail—although still the subject is nature as the elements …

Curved Like An Eye, George Perreault Jan 1988

Curved Like An Eye, George Perreault

Ahsahta Press

George Perreault’s Curved Like an Eye is an entrancing collection of works that explore personal loss and the resolution of love. It is a hard, distinct poetry in which the author prods the dark impulse of humanity and its own ache for renewal—its Spring when, as with the Ruminari, all possessions are burnt ceremoniously—leaving the spirit “clean, naked.” Perreault searches his own memory, his own yearnings, and finds not meaning or understanding, but brilliant and often haunting fragments of images tied to half-recollections of passions and vague motives. If at times he finds himself “clean, naked,” it is without denying …

The Abalone Heart, Barbara Meyn Jan 1988

The Abalone Heart, Barbara Meyn

Ahsahta Press

Barbara Meyn’s The Abalone Heart is a collection that adheres to a premise Henry David Thoreau held: poems arise from the very ground the poet stands on. And indeed, Meyn’s works stem directly from what’s at hand in the locale of her northern California home. “The importance of the place where she walks is not in her footprints, which are very much like anyone else’s,” writes D.L. Emblen in the book's introduction; “it is in the genuineness of the work that comes out of the place, a genuineness which grows out of the care with which this poet takes in …

Oedipus Fallen: Irony In The Fiction Of Milan Kundera, Douglas Lauen Jan 1988

Oedipus Fallen: Irony In The Fiction Of Milan Kundera, Douglas Lauen

Honors Papers

The dialogue Kundera depicts between himself and his characters is central to his work because this interplay mirrors that between the author and the reader. In that Kundera is sometimes a character in his fictions (not just a narrator), we must consider his role in his fiction as one of personas; some stronger, some thicker than others. Kundera, as the self conscious, autobiography-writing narrator of his stories, uses irony to mediate between his and our perspective on the, subject matter. Considering that his narrative tone has remained remarkably similar throughout his novels, and that his subject matter has closely followed …

You Can't Go Home Again: James Baldwin And The South, Daryl Cumber Dance Jan 1988

You Can't Go Home Again: James Baldwin And The South, Daryl Cumber Dance

English Faculty Publications

James Baldwin, like innumerable other Black artists, has found that in his efforts to express the plight of the Black man in America, he has been forced to deal over and over again with that inescapable dilemma of the Black American - the lack of sense of a positive self-identity. Time after time in his writings he has shown an awareness of the fact that identity contains, as Erik Erikson so accurately indicates, "a complementarity of past and future both in the individual and in society." Baldwin wrote in "Many Thousands Gone," "We cannot escape our origins, however hard we …

Husbands And Gods As Shadowbrutes: Beauty And The Beast From Apuleius To C. S. Lewis, Gwenyth Hood Jan 1988

Husbands And Gods As Shadowbrutes: Beauty And The Beast From Apuleius To C. S. Lewis, Gwenyth Hood

English Faculty Research

In the center of his long narrative, The Metamorphoses, (translated by Robert Graves under the title The Golden Ass) and composing a large part of the story, Apuleius inserts the tale of "Cupid and Psyche." Like most of the tales interwoven into the narrative, it had been popular before his time, and many parallel tales exist in the folklore of widely separated cultures. The most famous modem version is the French tale, "Beauty and the Beast" which inspires popular artists to this day. The myth also underlies the genre of the gothic romance, for example, Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre …
