Spatiality In Ulysses And Cubism, Lingchei Chen Jul 1989

Spatiality In Ulysses And Cubism, Lingchei Chen

English Theses & Dissertations

The paper is a study of James Joyce's Ulysses and Cubism in modern art. Both forms, as the paper presents, use similar techniques to establish multidimensionality in the work of art. In a spatial novel like Ulysses, because of its techniques, the reader is allowed to experience exactly what the characters experience as Joyce presents every aspect of the Dublin life simultaneously. A Cubist painting does the same. As the Cubist painter captures every side of the object and simultaneously presents these different views on the canvas, the spectator is therefore able to apprehend the object from every possible angle, …

Virginia Woolf's Keen Sensitivity To War: Its Roots And Its Impact On Her Fiction, Jane Hamovit Lauter Jul 1989

Virginia Woolf's Keen Sensitivity To War: Its Roots And Its Impact On Her Fiction, Jane Hamovit Lauter

English Theses & Dissertations

Virginia Woolf saw the nightmare of war as a form of madness which posed a threat not only to individual human life, but to art and culture as well. Her many tragic personal experiences with death together with the fact that she lived through World War I and the beginning of World War II, caused in her a keen sensitivity to the transitory nature of life. Because Woolf saw militarism and the violence of war as blindly chauvinistic and utterly wasteful, war became for her a source of anger and contempt as well as fear.

Woolf's response to war had …

Book Review Essay: Black Literature And Society In The Eighteenth Century, Rhett S. Jones Jun 1989

Book Review Essay: Black Literature And Society In The Eighteenth Century, Rhett S. Jones

Trotter Review

The eighteenth century, a growing consensus among historians suggests, was a crucial period in the evolution of racism. Most Europeans entered the century with few fixed ideas on the nature of race and instead thought of themselves and others primarily in ethnic and religious terms. The English who invaded Jamaica (then colonized and occupied by the Spaniards) in 1655, for example, saw themselves as English Christians and the defenders of the island as Spanish “Papists.” Papists for the English of the time were not Christians at all but instead persons enlisted in the army of the anti-Christ. Nearly a century …

Wreath-Laying In The George Eliot Memorial Gardens, Nuneaton- 1989, Beryl Kerby

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

I felt greatly honoured when I was invited to lay the Fellowship's wreath at today's ceremony. It was much later, when considering this address, that I realised I had studied none of George Eliot's works and had read very few.

However, I did know something of her. My parents and their friends all seem to have been involved, in some way, with the George Eliot Centenary celebrations in 1919 and very early on I was given a copy of Scenes of Clerical Life. How easy it is at Arbury Hall to look at the painting of Sir Roger Newdigate but …

Editorial, Lynn Maudlin, Christine Lowentrout

The Mythic Circle

There are lots of things going on in this world and, in the scheme of things, The Mythic Circle is a very small piece indeed. Still, it consumes more of Ye Olde Edytors’ effort and energy than you might imagine. Just about the same time that I found myself wondering, "why are we doing this, anyway?" while we struggled with overloaded schedules and my temporarily bi-coastal lifestyle (back in Altadena now) -- I’d started talking to Christine about whether we should hang up the gloves and climb out of the ring before we’re punch-drunk- the Mythopoeic Society’s members questionnaire started …
