Jack Kerouac's Pursuit Of The American West, Dan Fliegel May 1991

Jack Kerouac's Pursuit Of The American West, Dan Fliegel

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Called alternately "the father of hip," "King of the Beats," "the daddy of the swinging psychedelic generation," Jack Kerouac was less a thrill-seeking hipster than a serious author whose life and novels speak of our shared need to explore alternatives and renew ourselves, and of our frustration and regret for our movement away from tradition. Kerouac's life and literature can be viewed as an extended quest, an episodic series of explorations for meaning and for a way of life. He continually addressed the modernist question "How shall we live?," seeking answers in what one biographer calls an ongoing "pattern of …

Alcohol Advertising: Freedom Of Speech V. Social Responsibility, Reona Jack '91 Apr 1991

Alcohol Advertising: Freedom Of Speech V. Social Responsibility, Reona Jack '91

Honors Projects

In Illinois, 10% of the population, or approximately 800,000 citizens, meet the criteria to be classified as problem drinkers; nationally, one out of four children comes from an alcoholic home; and, alcohol plays a role in nearly half of America's murders, suicides, and accidental deaths, claiming at least 1,000,000 lives per year.' Not only do these statistics add up to social problems but they also reflect an increasing economic cost to society. Estimates of the cost of alcoholism and alcohol abuse reach nearly $117 billion a year, considering premature deaths, reduced work effort, and treatment.

Stain Upon The Silence: Samuel Beckett’S Deconstructive Inventions, Leigh Howard Apr 1991

Stain Upon The Silence: Samuel Beckett’S Deconstructive Inventions, Leigh Howard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In recent years, deconstruction theory has emerged as a key method for exploring public address, organizational culture, and literary discourse. Deconstruction theory encourages tearing apart hierarchy and established order to gain insights about the artifact being studied. Furthermore, the theory questions surface or superficial messages and encourages the reader to explore signals hidden below the surface. Deconstruction discounts context and places faith in experience.

Using the early plays of Samuel Beckett, this research explores deconstruction as a method to create messages. This new perspective transports deconstruction from a set of theoretical concepts into basic assumptions that enhance communication. This study …

"This Enterprise Non Shall Partake With Me." : Milton's Conquering Of His Precursors Through Orphean Allusions, Kathryn Nyreen Cooke Apr 1991

"This Enterprise Non Shall Partake With Me." : Milton's Conquering Of His Precursors Through Orphean Allusions, Kathryn Nyreen Cooke

Master's Theses

Within his poetry and prose, John Milton shows a respect for the authors of antquity while simultaneously seeking his own voice, a style that makes him different from and better than his predecessors. Milton's works contain expressions of these Renaissance characteristics: the appreciation of the Classics, the search for a more personal relationship with God, and the attempt to achieve some individuality; however, even in the smallest of literary figures such as the Orphean allusions, the need to combine a respect for the past with the ambition for a uniquely personal voice as a poet exists. The isolation of the …

Redefining The Legacy Of Mina Shaughnessy : A Critique Of The Politics Of Linguistic Innocence., Min-Zhan Lu Apr 1991

Redefining The Legacy Of Mina Shaughnessy : A Critique Of The Politics Of Linguistic Innocence., Min-Zhan Lu

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This article examines Mina Shaughnessy's Errors and Expectations in light of current discourse theories which posit language as a site of struggle among competing discourses. It finds Shaughnessy's analyses and recommended pedagogies dominated by a view of language as a politically innocent vehicle of meaning. The author argues that this view of language leads Shaughnessy to overlook basic writers' need to confront the dissonance they experience between academic and other discourses, which might undercut her goal of helping students achieve the "freedom of deciding how and when and where to use which language." The author further argues that to pursue …

George Eliot Fellowship Annual General Meeting- Treasurer's Report Mar 1991

George Eliot Fellowship Annual General Meeting- Treasurer's Report

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

From a financial point of view 1990 was an uneventful year with no major items of expenditure. Income from subscriptions showed a small increase over 1989 whereas that from donations was considerably less. This is because, you will recall, in 1989 we made a special appeal to Life Members to which they responded magnificently leading to an exceptionally large "Donation" income in that year.

Of our functions, the Gabriel Woolf readings once again showed an increase in profit but unfortunately the Diamond Jubilee Evening showed a loss. Souvenir Sales gave a healthy profit with the mini-statue of George Eliot and …

Welcome to The Mythic Circle #11. This issue offers some variations on a theme of Winter-into-Spring, particularly Doug Rossman’s notable "The Theft of the Sun"; let us know if you enjoy the seasonal parallelism. You’ll also notice that we continue to run a lot of poetry, including a series of poems by Dirk Verhulst which delicately probe the terror in everyday life, and a wryly lyrical series by Clelie Rich.
