Against Relativism: Restoring Truth In Writing, Barbara Couture
Against Relativism: Restoring Truth In Writing, Barbara Couture
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Jasper Neel and Barbara Herrnstein Smith do not find truth in writing because they do not regard truth as integral with human experience. As I have proposed, three rational assumptions deny the relationship. Ideological historicism rejects the malleability of the future and denies the possibility of human agency that both embraces and overcomes the past. Hence, truth which has not yet been found is seen as unattainable in human experience and, thus, in writing. Essentialist objectivity makes of truth an exchangeable, displaceable, replaceable object; it encourages the belief that observable and discrete differences in individuals' values deny the possibility of …

"As If I Could Do Anything Except Just Sit And Stare": A Gaze Of A Viewer/Reader In Psycho And To The Lighthouse, Stephanie Hunt Hegstad
Honors Papers
At the end of Alfred Hitchcock's film Psycho, the figure of Norman Bates (or maybe the figure of his mother--at this point, the distinction is fogged) hugs a blanket around him as he sits in his prison cell, staring, perfectly still except for the movements of his eyes, the expressions on his face, the slight movement of his head. He stares directly at the camera, the audience, while the phantom voice of Mother explains her trouble with her son ("he was always--bad"). The camera does not shift angles during this scene to relieve us of this penetrating gaze, but …

Charting The Anger Of Indian Women Through Narayan's Savitri, Teresa Hubel
Charting The Anger Of Indian Women Through Narayan's Savitri, Teresa Hubel
Department of English Publications
From the introduction:
Written in the late 1930s, when a new irascibility crept into the largely female-produced discourse on the status of women in India, The Dark Room is about a particular woman's indignation and revolt. Savitri is a Hindu wife following in the glorified footsteps of other Hindu wives, such as her namesake from the Mahabharata and Sita of the Ramayana. Although she lives up to the ideals of servitude and devotion implicit in these powerful feminine figures, Savitri of The Dark Room is betrayed by a patriarchal system that allows her husband the freedom of infidelity but denies …

Finding Mary In A World Of Eves: St. Jerome's Discourse On The Feminine, Kirsten Devries
Finding Mary In A World Of Eves: St. Jerome's Discourse On The Feminine, Kirsten Devries
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
In my thesis, I discussed St. Jerome's attitudes, as represented in his letters, toward women. I found that in his discourse, he limits female autonomy and authority by pigeonholing them into one, and only one, category: the role of Eve. I furthered my argument by using the theoretical material of Michel Foucault.
Redefining Balance: An Exploration Of D.H. Lawrence's Gender Roles And Polaritites And A Study Of Sons And Lovers And Lady Chatterley's Lover, Erin Holman
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
This thesis, as the title states, is a study of the gender polarities and balances in D. H. Lawrence's life and philosophy, especially as evident in Sons And Lovers and Lady Chatterly's Lover. It begins by examining and critiquing Kate Millett's criticism of Lawrence as written in her 1970 work Sexual Politics. It then moves to Elaine Showalter's use of Edwin and Shirley Ardener's "wild zone" theory, using this feminist theory as a means of more fully understanding the often polar relationship between man and woman, intellect and emotions, and mind and body. After this, the thesis applies this theory to …

A Playground Of Reading: Readers Of And In Don Quixote, Jennifer Coe
A Playground Of Reading: Readers Of And In Don Quixote, Jennifer Coe
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
My thesis took theoretical elements from the reader-response criticism of Wolfgang Iser, the poststructuralist criticism of Michel Foucault, and the comments of several other critics and applied them in a unique fashion to CervantesÕ Don Quixote. In doing so, I demonstrated the ability to understand theoretical issues in literary criticism, apply them to a specific text, and place ideas within a historical tradition.
