In her article, Minyoung Park examines how fashion in Quicksand by Nella Larsen and Pachinko by Min Jin Lee functions not simply as a visual strategy for passing but as a site where the wearers’ conflicting feelings—shame, desire, and defiance—emerge and persist. Rather than evaluating the success or failure of passing, the article shifts focus to the process of dressing—selecting, maintaining, and reflecting on clothing—through which identity is negotiated and feelings are embodied. At first glance, the concept of looking at the works of Tolkien through the prism of Classical studies may strike one as eccentric, even misguided. After all, he dedicated his academic life to the study of medieval literature, teach-ing courses in early English poetry as well as Norse myths and sagas. Likewise in his literary oeuvre, the majority of Tolkien’s inspirations are of indisputably medieval character, from the more topical concerns, such as the quest to reclaim the lost treasure in The Hobbit, to the recurrent puns and word-plays in Farmer Giles of Ham.

Throughout J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth legendarium, opportunities exist for male characters to participate in and learn from the wisdom and experience offered by female characters: what is remarkable is how often they fail to do so. The consequences of this failure are often considerable, ranging from a failed marriage (Aldarion and Erendis) to the loss of an entire kingdom (Melian and Thingol). However, on one occasion where a female character, Aredhel, is listened to, she is then severely punished via the narrative. The question must therefore be asked – what is Tolkien telling us about this gendered space of learning?

In response to the increasing politicization and polarization of discourses around gender, sexuality, and the body, feminist theorists like Judith Butler call for feminism to strive toward flexibility and responsivity. This essay lays out some of the theoretical considerations that inform studies of graphic embodiment—or studies of embodiment in graphic narratives—both generally and within feminist studies, then examines several graphic texts by Tillie Walden and Élodie Durand that exemplify feminist theories of embodiment, with particular attention to the creative co-construction of embodied narratives.

This paper studies the interaction of Song, Story, Time, and Fate in the context of the Elves' resistance to change by means of song and enchantment, specifically in Lothlórien until the arrival of the Fellowship of the Ring. Once Galadriel renounces the Ring and the resistance to change and the fading of the Elves, the mythic power of the Great Tales transforms the ability of Frodo and Sam to meet the fate that awaits them in Mordor.

This thesis explores how principles and practices from extracurricular literacy spaces and the extracurriculum as a whole can inform and revitalize the secondary English classroom. In response to growing student disengagement, apathy, and disconnection, particularly within highly standardized and product-focused classrooms, this argument investigates how programs such as the Nebraska Writers Collective’s All Writes Reserved program and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Young Writer Camp model authentic engagement, identity exploration and development, and rhetorical agency through creative, student-centered writing practices. This dissertation examines the intersection of gender and class identity in British proletarian Bildungsromane set during the General Strike of 1926 and the Miners’ Strike of 1984/5, referred to collectively as “Strike Bildungsromane.” These prolonged industrial conflicts temporarily disrupted the gender division of labor that had hitherto been a defining aspect of pit village life. This development encouraged proletarian writers of the interwar and post-war periods to consider coalfield women as political agents, capable of subverting their preordained roles within the private sphere. Originally published in 1757 as part of his Four Dissertations essay collection, David Hume’s essay, “Of the Standard of Taste,” occupies a prominent place in Enlightenment aesthetic studies. Due to an oversaturation of print materials being produced, eighteenth century society was concerned with evaluating and ranking the massive quantities of art being produced. Philosophers such as David Hume attempted to define criteria for determining a standard of taste, aiming to hierarchically rank works of art based on aesthetic experience. This project puts the history, context, and reception of medieval murals in dialog with The Book of Margery Kempe to identify neglected parallels between Margery’s sense of sight and the visual culture around her. Guided by a method of recovery that draws on interdisciplinary approaches to text and image, this dissertation combines digital tools, close reading, and archival accounts to compare how Margery responded to visions of holiness—both in spiritual revelations and in physical imagery—in murals which would have been on display during and in proximity to her travels. Both Caesar and the Pompeians base their heroic conceptions on ideals found in Greek and Roman marital and national heroism. Caesar and his enemies believe that his victories in battle result from Fortune’s protection and approval, allowing Caesar to justify the ideals of traditional heroism. My thesis illustrates the components of Black womanhood within Sula by Toni Morrison and The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw through the political theories of Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America, by Melissa V. Harris-Perry. These three works reiterate the multifacetedness of Black identity, specifically Black women in the United States of America. Through textual analysis of these works I examine the stereotypes, struggles, and experiences of motherhood, spirituality, and identity within each work and how slavery and racism impact many African American women. This paper describes the variation in the distributions and use of verb complementation types and patterns in selected academic textbooks. The theoretical framework is Chomsky’s phrase structure grammar. The data, obtained from the first chapters, titled, ‘General introduction’ and ‘Atom and its structure’ of purposively selected English Studies and Physics textbooks, comprising 473 transitive verb phrases are manually analyzed. The findings reveal that three verb complementation types, mono-transitive, intensive, and complex-transitive, vary in patterns across the two textbooks with the mono-transitive V+NP and intensive V+NP patterns being dominant in English while the complex-transitive V+PP pattern dominates in Physics.
