Editor's Message
Many of us come out of formal and advanced training in writing. We are at home with the humanities: philosophy, drama, the arts, aesthetics. We connect easily to both the teaching of literature and to literary exegesis. Ideas about literacy come easily to us.
We need to be aware of work being done in the field outside our focus in writing, literature, and language. Connections need to be made between us and other members of our cultural tapestry. Every once in a while someone tells me about the name of a book, an organization, or a journal that …

The Re Racination Of Driss Chraïbi: A Hajj In Search Of Mecca, John C. Hawley
The Re Racination Of Driss Chraïbi: A Hajj In Search Of Mecca, John C. Hawley
English
In his Introduction to Faces ef Islam, Kenneth Harrow refers to Clifford Geertz's elaboration of three forms of lslam that he observed in Morocco. The first was based upon a cultic veneration of dead saints and those in a patrilinear descent (the "siyyid complex"); the second was centered around individual holy men, marabou ts, and their set of practices (the" zawiya complex"); and the third was focused on the "royal assumption of sacred power assured through descent in the Prophet's line" (Harrow 1991, 6).This last form Geertz called the "maxzen complex" (Geertz 1968, 49-53).While it can be reasonably argued that Driss …

Portrayal Of Homelessness In Children’S And Young Adult Fiction, Susan J. Myers
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to compare the portrayal of homelessness in children's and young adult fiction books to the findings in known research. This study was a content analysis using a checklist to record the presence of individual characteristics, family background traits, and diversity among the homeless leading characters in each selected book. The portrayal of the homeless leading characters was found to be consistent with known research in the areas of individual characteristics and family backgrounds. Although the data concerning the diversity of gender was found to be consistent with known research, the data representing the diversity …
The Portrayal Of Abandonment By Mothers In Young Adult Literature, Bernie M. Hawley
The Portrayal Of Abandonment By Mothers In Young Adult Literature, Bernie M. Hawley
Graduate Research Papers
This study used content analysis of a selected sample of 33 young adult fiction books published between 1980-1995, to determine if the portrayal of abandonment of children by their mothers is realistic according to social research of those populations. Findings indicate that in a majority of the titles the abandonment is caused by the mother's need to establish her own identity and the abandoned child(ren)'s reactions are characterized by negative behaviors. These findings support the premise that contemporary young adult fiction presents mother abandonment in a realistic manner. It was found, however, that the majority of mothers in these books …

Edgar In Wonderland: Elements Of Nonsense In Lewis Carroll And Edgar Allan Poe, Martha Taussig
Masters Theses
The names of Lewis Carroll and Edgar Allan Poe would seldom appear together as literary "kindred spirits." While Carroll's imaginative tales have delighted generations of children and continue to provide vivid bedtime story memories, Poe's tales produce equally vivid nightmares. A comparison of the two writers' works, however, leads to the startling realization that despite their apparent differences, Carroll and Poe used the same tools and techniques to explore the same epistemological and existential questions. Like artists dipping into the same colors and simultaneously painting the same psychic landscape, they created eerily similar literary canvasses.
Carroll has long been recognized …

New Plays For Old : Jonson's Orton And Orton's Jonson, Josephine M. Wayling
Theses : Honours
The aim of this thesis is to ascertain to what extent Ben Jonson's play Volpone can be constructed through Joe Orton's play Loot. I will attempt to discover how far Loot can be said to be of use in re-examining Volpone in a different light since the emergence of Orton's brand of comic drama. I shall start by looking at influences such as Erasmus and his particular brand of humour as created in The Praise of Folly, and the implications for comedy that it presents in the form of the mock encomium. The relevance of "not what …

Birth And After Birth And Painting Churches: Tina Howe's Examination Of Love And Savagery In The American Family, Sarah Ennis-Chambers
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Playwright Tina Howe has been quoted as saying that "family life has been over-romanticized; the savagery has not been seen enough in the theatre and in movies . . ." (Moore 101). In two of her plays, Birth and After Birth (1973) and Painting Churches (1983), that savagery appears in the form of name-calling, jealousy, apathy, disregard, and physical and mental abuse. A juxtaposition of the similarities in Birth and After Birth and Painting Churches will explain the "savagery" Howe is examining. The earlier play is written in the surrealistic style of lonesco and Beckett, playwrights who have been a …
