Noel Coward's Contribution To The Comedy Of Manners., Clara-Marie Doughtry May 1940

Noel Coward's Contribution To The Comedy Of Manners., Clara-Marie Doughtry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An estimate of Noel Coward's contribution to the comedy of manners necessitates an understanding of: (1) the nature and the place of the comedy of manners in modern drama, (2) Noel Coward's background, and (3) an analysis of Noel Coward's formula for the comedy of manners. We find in the material relating to modern drama. little discussion of the comedy of manners. Occasionally plays may be mentioned as comedies of manners, but there is no discussion as to the specific nature of the comedy of manners in modern drama. The only book that discusses fully the comedy of manners in …

The Prose Works Of Annette Von Droste-Hulshoff, Helen Isabel Mervash

Bachelors’ Theses

Heredity and environment are important factors in life, but nowhere else do they have as important a role as in the life of a writer. In the works of every writer can be traced the influences of home life, of ancestors, of childhood surroundings and of friends. It has been the author’s purpose to attempt to show the great part Annette von Droste-Hulshoff’s Westphalian environment and tradition have played in her prose works.

Comparison Of The Gods And Goddesses Of The Iliad And The Aenid, Viola G. Strunk May 1932

Comparison Of The Gods And Goddesses Of The Iliad And The Aenid, Viola G. Strunk

Bachelors’ Theses

Anyone who studies classical literature must have a knowledge of mythology. Without this it is almost impossible to read and understand the ancient Greek and Latin authors. Many books have been written on the mythology of the ancients, but in my research work I have never found one that has been entirely devoted to a comparison of the mythology of the Iliad and the Aeneid. It is to offset this that I have undertaken to write this thesis. To claim, though, that this is the only work of its kind would be presumptuous. In this thesis, I have used as …

The Backward Gazing Mediaevalism Of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Mary Eustella Bush May 1931

The Backward Gazing Mediaevalism Of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Mary Eustella Bush

Bachelors’ Theses

The theme of this thesis is to present an analysis of some of Rossetti's poems, ballads, and translations in the light of the mediaevalism and mysticism as portrayed in them. The material is an outgrowth of a comparative study of these works and the sources whence he obtained his inspirations, - namely, the Early Italian Poets and Dante.

The Figures Of Speech In The First Six Books Of Vergil's Aeneid, Herbert Kretschman May 1931

The Figures Of Speech In The First Six Books Of Vergil's Aeneid, Herbert Kretschman

Bachelors’ Theses

One of the ultimate objectives for the teaching of secondary Latin cited as valid in "The Report of the Classical Investigation” is the development of an appreciation of the literary qualities of the Latin author read, and a great appreciation of the elements of literary technique employed in prose and verse. For this reason, inasmuch as a study of the figures of speech in Vergil contributes to these ends, and inasmuch as a teacher of Vergil ought to have this knowledge, I consider this subject a fitting topic for a thesis.

The Catholic Ideal In Modern American Fiction, Antoinette J. Newton May 1930

The Catholic Ideal In Modern American Fiction, Antoinette J. Newton

Bachelors’ Theses

Within the comparatively small compass of these pages, certain limitations are necessarily imposed upon the writer. It is physically impossible to include a complete survey of every novel written by an American author during the past thirty years. In the first place, many of our American fiction creators have taken up residence in Europe, from where they now write their novels; contrarily, also, many foreign authors have emigrated to America to market their wares. Owing to the difficulty of tracing every clue concerning a writer's nationality, many barriers arise to block an attempted, complete survey. Then, too, the present writer …

Romance And Walpole, Mary Mercedes Tintel Jun 1929

Romance And Walpole, Mary Mercedes Tintel

Bachelors’ Theses

In studying romantic literature we realize that ro¬ mance is not merely a nassing whim, but a lasting, fundamental trait in human nature. In some cases ro¬ mantic authors have nermitted their hearts to run away with their heads to such an extent, that sane readers have turned away in disgust at the wild extravagance of this false romanticism. But true romance is always with us. It is not a matter of any particular century, but a product of all times and of all nations. Our age is no exception to the rule. Among modern English writers who are inspired …

Lastly, there will be a discussion of the concepts of romanticism held by the leading poet is each nation, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Keats and Shelley in England, and Lamartine, Vigny, and Hugo in France are the romanticists to be considered.

Fantasy In Shakespeare, Barrie And Yeats, Dorothy Anne Dawe Jun 1927

Fantasy In Shakespeare, Barrie And Yeats, Dorothy Anne Dawe

Bachelors’ Theses

Shakespeare, Barrie and Yeats. What a diversity of thoughts and ideas their manes present. Each ts a genius, and each is different from the other, for geniuses are never like any other people. Each has become a literary success through a different media. And yet they are alike in one respect. They all possess that quality of "Fantasy". They have each inculcated that spirit into their works, and hence are kindred in one respect at least.

A Comparison Of John Dryden's Prose With That Of John Henry Newman, Walter Bronk Celichowski Jun 1926

A Comparison Of John Dryden's Prose With That Of John Henry Newman, Walter Bronk Celichowski

Bachelors’ Theses

In order to gain a clear idea of this thesis, it is necessary to sketch briefly each author's life. Thus we will be able to distinguish the various characteristics of their early careers. This will aid in clearing up points which, otherwise would seem difficult, without any preliminary knowledge of each man's life.

John Dryden was born in 1631 at Aldwinkle in Northamptonshire, his parents being members of the upper middle class and of Puritan sympathies. He was sent.to the Westminster school, and thence in 1650 to Trinity College Cambridge, where he remained at least seven years. During this time …

A Comparative Study Of The Dramatic Movement In Sophoclean And Shakespearean Tragedy, Victor Michael Hamm Jun 1926

A Comparative Study Of The Dramatic Movement In Sophoclean And Shakespearean Tragedy, Victor Michael Hamm

Bachelors’ Theses

The first draft of this essay began thus: "Aristotle, in his 'Poetics', when discussing tragedy, treats the elements of that dramatic form under four heads, to wit: objects, medium, manner of representation, and function. We are interested in the first of the above-mentioned: objects. For we intend to trace the essential differences in the muthos, drama, dianoia, and ethe, of Sophoclean tragedy as against "Shakespearean." The writer then continued with an apology of reasons why he was not going to treat all four tragic elements! As he progressed in the work as first conceived, however, he discovered that even with …
