Kilian McCurrie. Spiritual Identities, Teacher Identities, and the Teaching of Writing.

By showing that a teacher's pedagogy is prodoundly informed by a basic spiritual disposition, the author offers a view of teaching that is often neglected in studies of teacher identity.

Robert Root. The Experimental Art.

Nonfiction is an experimental art, as contemporary examples make clear, and writing teachers need to show students both how meaning arises from writers' experiments with material and also how form from …

Dread, Route And Time: An Autobiographical Walking Of Everything Else, Phil Smith Jan 2003

Dread, Route And Time: An Autobiographical Walking Of Everything Else, Phil Smith

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

This response to Reconstruction's Summer 2002 edition, Volume 2, Number 3, autobiogeography: considering space and identity, particularly to the papers of Matthew Wolf-Meyer and Davin Heckman, Subhash Jaireth, Deirdre Heddon and Sally Munt, is an attempt to establish provisionally whether a discourse that sets critical theory, autobiographical practice and a poetics of space in performative motion orbiting each other can add anything to the critical discussion of autobiogeography. Part of my motivation is an antipathy toward criticism that can be applied to everything but itself. Given that hybridity will be an important part of a critical discourse about …

A Textual Analysis Of The Portrayal Of Parents In Young Adult Literature, Kathryn L. Reisetter Houck Jan 2003

A Textual Analysis Of The Portrayal Of Parents In Young Adult Literature, Kathryn L. Reisetter Houck

Graduate Research Papers

This research examined the way in which parents are portrayed in young adult literature. Textual analysis was the methodology used to sort and code the 24 books that met the researcher's criteria, which were that books had to be published within the last decade and characters had to be from two-parent, intact families. By looking at the themes, the researcher attempted to interpret the information and draw inferences. The research yielded some surprising results as to how parents are portrayed. in the majority of young adult novels, parents are present at least to some degree. They are typically portrayed in …

Dramatic Relocation: The Time And Place For Shakespeare On Film, Lydia Lunning Jan 2003

Dramatic Relocation: The Time And Place For Shakespeare On Film, Lydia Lunning

Honors Papers

"Doing Shakespeare is simply harder than anything else," Colm Feore says to his interviewer, while apparently on break from rehearsing his role as Marcus Andronicus before principal photography begins for Julie Taymor's film, Titus (1999). "It's harder than Chekov, it's harder than Moliere, it's harder than Racine, it's harder than .. . anything!" ("The Making of Titus," DVD Special Features). The team involved in Michael Almereyda's Hamlet (2000) as well as that of Richard Loncraine's Richard III (1995) didn't have it any easier. By all accounts of each filmmaking process, none of the films to be discussed here had the …

"Stuff You Really Want To Read:" Pleasure And Negotiation In Teen Magazine Reading, Margaret E. Troyer Jan 2003

"Stuff You Really Want To Read:" Pleasure And Negotiation In Teen Magazine Reading, Margaret E. Troyer

Honors Papers

The first half of my paper closely examines teen magazines, with three major thematic areas of focus. Because the constructed ideal is such a fundamental part of teen magazines' pleasure, I look at editors' rhetorical strategies for establishing their expectations of their audience. Teen magazines depend so heavily on advertising revenue that they must necessarily construct the ideal teen as materialistic. In my next section, I consider some effects of magazines' focus on commodities. Finally, I look at the ways in which the special discourse of teen magazines shapes the constructed ideal and affects readers' pleasure. I focus on the …

How To Make A Girl: Female Sexuality In Young Adult Literature, Ann Elizabeth Younger

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Young Adult literature is an important source of information for young readers, and this genre makes a distinct contribution to the cultural and social construction of femininity and female sexuality in its pages. How to Make a Girl: Female Sexuality in Young Adult Literature analyzes representations of female sexuality in more than fifty texts. By examining these texts in relation to each other and in terms of historical development, this project creates a literary history of female sexuality in Young Adult fictions. By depicting young women in varying stages of adolescence and young adulthood, these fictional texts offer unique representations …

"Science In Skirts": Representations Of Women In Science In The "B" Science Fiction Films Of The 1950s, Bonnie Noonan Jan 2003

"Science In Skirts": Representations Of Women In Science In The "B" Science Fiction Films Of The 1950s, Bonnie Noonan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This project shows how central representations of women in science were to the “B” science fiction films of the 1950s and uses these films as valuable indicators for cultural analysis. I argue that the emergence of the modern American science fiction film in 1950 combined with the situation of post-W.W.II women in science to create a genre explicitly amenable to exploring the tension between a woman’s place in the home and her place in the work force, particularly in the fields of science. Out of a context of 114 “B” science fiction films produced between 1950 and 1966, I offer …

Exploring Ethical Dimensions Through Fiction, Abha Chatterjee Dec 2002

Exploring Ethical Dimensions Through Fiction, Abha Chatterjee

IIMB Management Review

Based on her experience with students of science and engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, Prof Abha Chatterjee provides a case study for exploring the dimensions of ethics through fiction. While literature can be an instrument in raising a variety of ethical values and themes, its advantage lies in that it deals with the concrete and the particular and readers can learn from it without the intense emotional upheavals that accompany such dilemmas in everyday life. Muktadhara, a play by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore was selected as a case study as it evokes problems which engineers would identify …

Don't Put Your Shoes On The Bed: A Moral Analysis Of To Kill A Mockingbird., Mitziann Stiltner Dec 2002

Don't Put Your Shoes On The Bed: A Moral Analysis Of To Kill A Mockingbird., Mitziann Stiltner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Harper Lee wrote a remarkable novel which provides a great deal of moral insight for its readers; through a use of history, moral instruction, and character development, Lee establishes a foundation for how people in an often intolerant world should live peacefully together. Moreover, she reminds the reader that regardless of socioeconomic status or race everyone deserves to be treated with respect and kindness. In establishing this moral analysis one must consider the historical source of Tom Robinson’s trial, the Scottsboro Trial; the Finch children’s consistent and exemplified instruction from their widowed father, Atticus, their housekeeper, Calpurina, and other close …

What Is Method And Why Does It Matter?, Michael A. Elliott, Claudia Stokes Dec 2002

What Is Method And Why Does It Matter?, Michael A. Elliott, Claudia Stokes

English Faculty Research

The recent emphasis on interdisciplinary scholarship—manifest in the resurgence of institutional programs like American studies and publications in cultural studies—has relocated both the literary critic and the literary text to unfamiliar territory. This new interest in broaching disciplinary limits has proved to be exciting and invigorating. Literary critics have turned their attention to media other than the written text, and nonliterary specialists, such as historians and sociologists, have used literary texts to support their own research. This book is a response to American literary interdisciplinary and attempts to raise, and address, the inevitable questions that emerge when disciplines collaborate: What can texts tell us about …

Twice a year, in the May and November issues, RTE publishes a selected bibliography of recent research in the teaching of English. Most of the studies appeared during the six-month period preceding the compilation of the bibliography (January through June 2002 for the present bibliography), but some studies that appeared earlier are occasionally included. The listing is selective; we make no attempt to include all research and research-related articles that appeared in the period under review. Comments on the bibliography and suggestions about items for inclusion may be directed to the bibliography editors. We encourage you to send your suggestions …
