Robert Penn Warren And Photography, Joseph Millichap Jan 2012

Robert Penn Warren And Photography, Joseph Millichap

Robert Penn Warren Studies

Robert Penn Warren’s career and canon demonstrate his more than casual interest in photography, much like those of several contemporaries in the Southern Renaissance. Warren’s 1972 essay about photographer Walker Evans recalls how photographs in the 1930s opened the emerging writer’s imagination to the power inherent in any art form to revise commonplace perceptions of social and subjective reality. Evans and many other photographers thus influenced Warren in his use of photographic tropes for an artistic transformation of the visual art of photography into the verbal art of literature. My close readings of recreated photographs in several major works of …

Slumdog Millionaire: The Film, The Reception, The Book, The Global, Alpana Sharma

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire was the runaway commercial hit of 2009 in the United States, nominated for ten Oscars and bagging eight of these, including Best Picture and Best Director. Also included in its trophy bag arc seven British Academy Film awards, all four of the Golden Globe awards for which it was nominated, and five Critics' Choice awards. Viewers and critics alike attribute the film's unexpected popularity at the box office to its universal underdog theme: A kid from the slums of Mumbai makes it to the game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire and wins not only …

The New Pilgrim's Progress, Anglican Longings, And Eighteenth-Century Missionary Fantasies, Laura M. Stevens Jan 2012

The New Pilgrim's Progress, Anglican Longings, And Eighteenth-Century Missionary Fantasies, Laura M. Stevens

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

At its core, this paper is a recovery project, focused on a neglected novel, and so I will begin with a brief plot summary. The New Pilgrim's Progress, or, The Pious Indian Convert, first published in London in 1748, tells the story of its narrator, James Walcot, a young Anglican clergyman who, feeling called to convert the heathens of America, emigrates to Jamaica. There he nearly triggers an uprising by telling slaves that he believes slavery to be unjust. He then sails to Charles Town, South Carolina, where he becomes personal chaplain to a wealthy landowner and assists …

The Hyperspatial Self: Henry James And Posthuman Modalities, Christina Patsiokas Jan 2012

The Hyperspatial Self: Henry James And Posthuman Modalities, Christina Patsiokas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the era of computing and ubiquitous media, scholars across disciplines have been developing new models for how humans operate in complex environments. This line of inquiry can be bracketed under the larger term of posthuman thought. This thesis attempts to engage the critical and fictional work of Henry James with several posthumanist texts to challenge the temporal limitations of both. Against the backdrop of posthuman discourse, James emerges not as the cherished father of modernism but rather as a pioneer of distant territories far beyond the ways in which the modernist novel conceptualized the self and its consciousness. James …

From Tawa'if To Wife? Making Sense Of Bollywood's Courtesan Genre, Teresa Hubel Jan 2012

From Tawa'if To Wife? Making Sense Of Bollywood's Courtesan Genre, Teresa Hubel

Department of English Publications

Introduction:

Although constituting what might be described as only a thimbleful of water in the ocean that is Hindi cinema, the courtesan or tawa'if film is a distinctive Indian genre, one that has no real equivalent in the Western film industry. With Indian and diaspora audiences generally, it has also enjoyed a broad popularity, its music and dance sequences being among the most valued in Hindi film, their specificities often lovingly remembered and reconstructed by fans. Were you, for example, to start singing "Dil Cheez Kya Hai" or "Yeh Kya Hua" especially to a group of north Indians over the …

Peter Dickinson World Stages, Local Audiences: Essays On Performance, Place, And Politics, Kim Solga Jan 2012

Peter Dickinson World Stages, Local Audiences: Essays On Performance, Place, And Politics, Kim Solga

Department of English Publications

Peter Dickinson’s World Stages, Local Audiences is a book I really, really wanted to like. It takes significant risks in style and structure. It is personal and invested. It is compelled by the same kinds of ques- tions—about political performance, social justice, community affect, and cultural change—that motivate a great deal of my own work. It is relentlessly eclectic in its choice of primary sources, examining everything from the Beijing and Vancouver Olympics to the drama of Tony Kushner to the media spectacles of professional soccer. It is a scholarly nomadology (136-175)—a term I suspect Dickinson won’t mind me applying …

A Memoir Of Uncertainty:Tim O’Brien’S Vietnam Narratives, Mitchell Bailey

English Senior Seminar Papers

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

Uncertainty is human. It is part of our nature. As unique individuals, we see the world differently than those around us, sometimes subtly; in other cases fundamentally, different. Uncertainty deals with the way we understand and interpret information; experiences, education, emotions, and biases affect comprehension. Uncertainty displays itself in the decision-making process. (Cohen 40) Humans react to provocations much differently than others. Decisions are based on the nature of these internal and external impressions. All warfare is uncertain because it is human based. As humans, it is our very …

Murder In The Digital Age: Rethinking Crime Fiction Theory Through The Medium Of Videogames, Fanny Anne Ramirez Jan 2012

Murder In The Digital Age: Rethinking Crime Fiction Theory Through The Medium Of Videogames, Fanny Anne Ramirez

English Theses - Archive

Videogames are a multibillion-dollar industry. Their high definition graphics and sophisticated gameplay cater to a continuously growing crowd of enthusiastic players. But what is their standing in the academic community? Can games be studied as texts or are they limited by the ludic qualities of their medium? Through a careful application of crime fiction theory to the videogames Heavy Rain and L.A. Noire, I will demonstrate the genre's ability to expand beyond the media of print and cinema. Features such as interactivity, decision-making, and player immersion offer new ways of looking at existing literary conventions. The omission of videogames in …

Networked Authorship: A Community Of Creators In Born-Digital Literature, Tricia Jost Dupew Jan 2012

Networked Authorship: A Community Of Creators In Born-Digital Literature, Tricia Jost Dupew

English Theses - Archive

Authorship of born-digital literature exists in a state referent to but decidedly apart from authorship of more traditional printed texts. Ranging far from the idea that the author exists in a state of solitary genius, authorship in born-digital literature is a collective endeavor which both reacts to and anticipates an ongoing cultural shift from material goods produced in an industrial setting to immaterial goods produced in the networked environment of the cultural collective. By examining the creation of born-digital texts, the placement of the reader within the textual and multimedia experience itself, and the influence of the intelligent machine in …

Surviving The Eco-Apocalypse: Losing The Natural World And The Self In Post-Apocalyptic And Dystopian Literature, Samantha Drake Jan 2012

Surviving The Eco-Apocalypse: Losing The Natural World And The Self In Post-Apocalyptic And Dystopian Literature, Samantha Drake

Theses & Honors Papers

This thesis discusses the connection between humanity and the ecosystem as they relate to modern science-fiction/dystopian apocalypse fiction. It explores the increasingly popular trope of antagonism between humanity and the environment, explaining how humans become more alienated from themselves and the environment as they rely more heavily on artificial and technological pursuits. The eco-apocalypse is discussed as a literary theme which warns about the consequences of environmental destruction and how it relates to the destruction and renewal of humanity itself.

Introduction To Artifacts & Illuminations: Critical Essays On Loren Eisley, Thomas Lynch, Susan M. Maher

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Acknowledged as one of the most important twentieth-century American nature writers, Loren Eiseley was a widely admired practitioner of creative nonfiction, a genre that, in part due to his example, has flourished in recent decades. Contemporary nature writers regularly cite Eiseley as an inspiration and model. General readers, as well, appreciate Eiseley's eloquent, complex, and informative essays; devoted readers have helped keep Eiseley continuously in print since his books first began appearing more than a half century ago. Clearly, Eiseley is a writer who matters. As many observers lament, current environmental and other problems require a public and media that …

Critical Pop Culture Consumers: Using Tupac And Music In The Classroom To Teach Critical Literary Analysis Of Pop Culture, Marilyn Miller Jan 2012

Critical Pop Culture Consumers: Using Tupac And Music In The Classroom To Teach Critical Literary Analysis Of Pop Culture, Marilyn Miller

The Utah English Journal

Teaching critical analysis is a unit that I designed to get students to understand the elements in an increasingly complex world where language provides the vehicle to refine thought. Because students are imbued in the element, they are often persuaded, cajoled, and tricked into embracing messages and images that may negatively influence their lives. Teaching them to look at the music and the videos that influence them and critically analyze the persuasive techniques and the impact of these messages on their developing values empowers them to choose more carefully the music they embrace or at least understand the influence of …

The Shamanic Archetype In Robinson Jeffers Poetry, Steven B. Herrmann Jan 2012

The Shamanic Archetype In Robinson Jeffers Poetry, Steven B. Herrmann

Jeffers Studies

This essay pays homage to Robinson Jeffers’s totemic presence as a shaman-poet of Carmel-by-the-Sea, where the essay’s author was born in 1956. It views shamanism as a symbolic process of transformation that takes place at an emotional, instinctive, and spiritual level; as a method of ecstasy found throughout Jeffers’ poetry and prose from beginning to end of his career. The shamanic archetype takes on concrete form through Jeffers’ ritual enactments of his dreams, spirit visitations, visions, and shamanistic voices that sound to him from Native influences. Science gave Jeffers a vision to behold the world’s spiritual traditions from a vista …
