Most Italians thought of themselves, and some still do, in terms of provincial identities. In America, they tended to settle in large Italian colonies, duplicating the customs and traditions of their particular Italian town or village (Mangione and Morreale 130). So it was not unusual for people from one particular town or village to be housed in one tenement or on one block. Family and their village of origin were very important. Everything in their lives was based on one or the other, for those were the things that provided safety and security. Home and family were the only respites …

2012 Fall Semester
Recognizing our faults and failures is no voluntary task. We are cautious, almost reluctant, to do so as those shortcomings cast a shadow over the ideal lives we would like to have. Our inability to confront our problems leads us to follow the lives of characters in books and stories whose flaws are apparent to us – characters who struggle valiantly against or fall miserably to the challenges they face. From the epic Beowulf, where the god-like hero Beowulf fights glorious battles, to Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, where common folk embark on a pilgrimage, we are fascinated by …

Intermodality In Teaching Writing, Margarette Christensen
Intermodality In Teaching Writing, Margarette Christensen
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation articulates a writing pedagogy based on a theory of intermodality to help writing instructors navigate the affordances and challenges of multimodal composition. Drawing from recent discoveries in neuroscience about how the brain makes meaning, I situate this pedagogy of intermodality – literally, “between the modes” – within the Rhetoric and Composition traditions of embodied rhetoric and visual/multi-sensory rhetoric. A pedagogy attuned to intermodality capitalizes on how the senses (“modes”) work together to create meaning when composing with sound, image, movement, and text. In addition to the five senses, intermodality also incorporates the cultural, social, and material aspects of …
An Infusion Of The Modern Spirit Into The Ancient Form:’ Textual Objects And Historical Consciousness In George Eliot’S Romola., Mattie Burket
An Infusion Of The Modern Spirit Into The Ancient Form:’ Textual Objects And Historical Consciousness In George Eliot’S Romola., Mattie Burket
English Faculty Publications
In George Eliot’s Romola, manuscripts represent the ability of objects to embody the past. Through various characters’ interactions with manuscripts, Eliot explores competing ways of using and valuing history, from Bardo’s obsessive collecting to Savonarola’s ideological co-optation. As the story progresses, however, manuscripts all but disappear and are replaced by printed texts. Through this depiction of technological change, Eliot advances her case for a particular kind of historical consciousness, one that engages critically—rather than fetishistically or opportunistically—with the past. Print, Eliot suggests, allows history to become widely accessible for public consumption, thereby weakening the aura of the past and allowing …

The Challenges Of Oral History In The 21st Century: Diversity, Inequality And Identity Construction Using Online Video Oral Histories In University Courses Across The Curriculum, Gail Gradowski, Jill Goodman Gould
English
Thanks to the internet, educators now have unprecedented access to oral histories. We are examining the way that video oral histories can be used and integrated in various kinds of university courses. Now easily available to educators are a wide range of oral histories, from small collections like Ball State University's video interviews of 40 members of the U.S. Army's First Infantry Division from the Vietnam War to large archives of oral histories such the Densho Digital Archive of over 600 video interviews documenting the Japanese American internment during WWII. The variety is already impressive and it is growing very …

Bias In A Just World? Sexual Prejudice, Gender Self-Esteem, And Intimate Partner Violence, Crystal D. Mahoy
Bias In A Just World? Sexual Prejudice, Gender Self-Esteem, And Intimate Partner Violence, Crystal D. Mahoy
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Each year, approximately 835,000 men and 1.3 million women are victims of intimate partner violence (IPV; American Bar Association, n.d). Although the prevalence of same-sex intimate partner violence (IPV) is approximately the same as IPV in heterosexual couples (Alexander, 2002), fewer studies have examined perceptions of IPV in same-sex couples or of IPV perpetrated against heterosexual men compared to heterosexual women. In the current study, Just World Theory (Lerner & Miller, 1978) is used as a framework for understanding factors associated with perceptions of heterosexual and same-sex IPV, including sexual prejudice and gender self-esteem. Perceptions of IPV were examined in …

Mythcon 43 - Across The Continents: Myths And Legends From Europe And Asia Meet And Mingle, The Mythopoeic Society
Mythcon Programs
Elements from non-Western/nonsEuropean fantasy traditions have a growing presence in modern fantasy literature, either intact or blended with Western themes and images. Mythcon 43 will explore the roots of this cross-pollination, and how it continues to unfold and enrich mythopoeic literature.
