Viral Modernism: The Influenza Pandemic And Interwar Literature By Elizabeth Outka (Review), James Fitz Gerald
Viral Modernism: The Influenza Pandemic And Interwar Literature By Elizabeth Outka (Review), James Fitz Gerald
English and Media Studies Faculty Publications
Elizabeth Outka begins Viral Modernism with an important and, given our own pandemic present, strikingly relevant question: “why does the deadly 1918–1919 influenza pandemic seem to make so few appearances in British, Irish, and American literature of the period?” (1). Until Outka, critics have largely left questions concerning the flu pandemic not just unanswered but unasked. Despite killing more than 50 million people worldwide—the US suffered more deaths in the pandemic than in World War I, World War II, and the imperial conflicts of Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq combined—the Great Flu Pandemic has been consistently overshadowed by the Great War …
Looking Backward While Pushing Forward, Rebecca Elizabeth Van Horn
Looking Backward While Pushing Forward, Rebecca Elizabeth Van Horn
The Tuxedo Archives
“We’re so old, Becky. Becky, we are so old.” This palindromic couplet came from the ex-boyfriend I hadn’t seen in over ten years. We had been in a brief and mildly dysfunctional relationship ten years before that, back when I was twenty and he was thirty. We had remained friends after our breakup and, after a few years absence, regained contact through the contemporary perpetual This is Your Life-esque reunion of social media.
Connection Failure: War, Spiritualism And Communications Media In Violet Hunt's "Love's Last Leave.", Melissa Dinsman, Heather M. Robinson
Connection Failure: War, Spiritualism And Communications Media In Violet Hunt's "Love's Last Leave.", Melissa Dinsman, Heather M. Robinson
Publications and Research
An overlooked figure of modernist circles, Violent Hunt was a suffragette, novelist, and author of ghost stories. In her second collection of haunted narratives, More Tales of The Uneasy (1925), Hunt explores the ghostliness of the Great War, both for those on the front and at home. In this essay, we focus on the third story in this volume, “Love’s Last Leave,” and argue that Hunt includes both ghost story tropes and communications media to articulate the real deadliness of the Great War. Communications technology and spiritualism share a similar historical evolution, and in “Love’s Last Leave” both types …
Mirrors To The Underworld: Reflective Portals Between Life And Death In The Harry Potter Series, Thea Juneau
Mirrors To The Underworld: Reflective Portals Between Life And Death In The Harry Potter Series, Thea Juneau
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
This article argues that reflective surfaces throughout all seven Harry Potter novels symbolize thresholds between discrete worlds. By displaying Harry’s dead parents on ‘the other side’ of the Mirror of Erised, the text draws on the Myth of Narcissus and various other mythological death-mirrors to create the impression of an inverse afterlife realm where the dead live again, supporting the central themes of death and grief in the series. By drawing upon Lori M. Campbell’s theory of object ‘porters,’ the article shows how the gradual transformation of this framework through more abstract reflections (eyes, creatures, lakes) reveals a deep symbolic …

Warrioress In White: A Semiotic Analysis Of America's Joan Of Arc In The Women Of The Copper Country, Akasha Khalsa
Warrioress In White: A Semiotic Analysis Of America's Joan Of Arc In The Women Of The Copper Country, Akasha Khalsa
Conspectus Borealis
Mary Doria Russell’s The Women of the Copper Country is a fictionalized historical account of the 1913 mining strike in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Significantly in this strike, a great deal of leadership was focused in the Union’s Women’s Auxiliary. In particular, one woman formed the backbone of the local movement. Known by her community as Big Annie, Anna Klobuchar Clements was the heart of the 1913 strike. Memories of her bravery linger today in the form of recorded testimonies by elderly community members, immortalization in plaques and songs, and Russell’s popular novel. Today she is remembered not as herself, not …
Trans∗Vulnerability And Digital Research Ethics: A Qubit Ethical Analysis Of Transparency Activism, Avery C. Edenfield, Ryan Cheek, Sam Clem
Trans∗Vulnerability And Digital Research Ethics: A Qubit Ethical Analysis Of Transparency Activism, Avery C. Edenfield, Ryan Cheek, Sam Clem
English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works
Trans communities across the United States are under assault. Researchers seeking to work with trans people and other multiply marginalized and underrepresented communities must attend to ethical research practices within the communities in which they participate. Digital research ethics is particularly murky with issues of embodiment, vulnerability, and unclear IRB guidance. Comparing two transparency activist organizations-Wikileaks and DDoSecrets-we introduce "qubit ethics," a trans material, trans-corporeal ethics of care as praxis within vulnerable online communities. We then demonstrate how this unique approach to research design allows for the complex entanglements that is trans life, particularly digital life. Finally, we present clear …

Disaster Documentation Revisited The Evolving Damage Assessments Of Emergency Management In Oregon, Henry Covey
English Faculty Publications and Presentations
This report revisits a previous case study focused on the computing machinery and design of communication that are employed at the local, county, regional, state, and federal levels in Oregon to collect, review, and publish damage assessments of disasters and other emergency events. Since the last report, emergency managers throughout Oregon have faced numerous disaster incidents, including the COVID-19 pandemic, ice storms, flooding, and some of the worst heat waves, drought conditions, and megafires on record, with the threat of more to come in the years ahead. After years of research and development, fueled by lessons learned from a catastrophic …
Where Are The Women?: An Ecofeminist Reading Of William Golding’S Lord Of The Flies, Hawk Chang
Where Are The Women?: An Ecofeminist Reading Of William Golding’S Lord Of The Flies, Hawk Chang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The absence of female characters and their voices in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954) has been previously examined. On the surface, this fiction focuses on the struggle and survival of a group of boys who are left alone on a Pacific island against the background of nuclear warfare. The only presence of women in the story seems to be the aunt via a boy’s narration. However, when approaching the fiction through the lens of ecofeminism, we can find a range of feminized entities which are metaphorically embodied in the natural surroundings of the secluded island. The boys’ interactions …
Graphic Nonsense And Historical Trauma In Fred Chao’S Johnny Hiro, Jin Lee
Graphic Nonsense And Historical Trauma In Fred Chao’S Johnny Hiro, Jin Lee
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article introduces the concept of “graphic nonsense” to explain nonsense in Fred Chao’s graphic narrative, Johnny Hiro, which features figures of monster (Godzilla and King Kong) as well as real U.S. political figures (Michael Bloomberg and John P. O’Brien). Focusing on transpacific trauma, this article articulates a counter-history using Fredric Jameson’s terms to expose the process of silencing the other and “retextualizing” history. Although puzzling at first, if not silly at best, the nonsensical elements in the graphic narrative can prompt the reader to find out historical allusions in Godzilla and King Kong to make sense out of …
The Craft Of The Unknown: Transnational Texts In The Creative Writing Classroom, Hannah Kroonblawd
The Craft Of The Unknown: Transnational Texts In The Creative Writing Classroom, Hannah Kroonblawd
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
This article addresses the role(s) reading and exemplar texts play in the creative writing classroom, as well as the responsibility taken up by the creative writing instructor as they place particular texts before their students. Focusing on the introductory creative writing classroom and beginning with a general overview of the purpose (university-prescribed or generally implied) of such a space, this article promotes expansive and generous reading practices via transnational texts. Using cosmopolitanism as an anchor, and concluding with a list of practical in-print and online resources, this article asks how creative writers learn to make meaning, both for others and …

Cluster Approach To Studying Makom In Secondary School, Malokhat Mukhitdinova, Alexandra Medvedeva, Marina Bazarova
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
The article analyzes the possibilities of the cluster approach in the study of the ancient genre of poppy seeds in general music education, which contributes to the teaching, formation and development of ideas about the Uzbek folk music culture in schools, in the context of the subjects of the aesthetic cycle. It also offers innovative methods and forms of teaching, the introduction of educational technologies, the cluster approach, as a more progressive and effective method of study for the perception of makom by students not only as a cultural monument, but as a living full-fledged musical tradition of the Uzbek …

Integrative Approach In The Efl Classes, Tursinoy Ravshanova, Nazira Isanova
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
In the article it was given about a learning process on an integrative basis, integrative-educational activities and integrated didactic approaches. This approach does not neglect, either, the home languages of the learners, especially when they explicitly taught. One can therefore have two (or even three or four) languages that are being “tackled” simultaneously. Despite the great potential and effectiveness of the integrative skills approach many teachers, especially in EFL contexts still implement the segregated skills teaching by presenting one skill separately from the others. In many EFL programs, courses on speaking are isolated from writing or listening learning activities are …

Teaching Multicultural Literature In The College Classroom, Jordan K. Fleming
Teaching Multicultural Literature In The College Classroom, Jordan K. Fleming
Selected Honors Theses
Due to a lack of research on the topic and events of 2020, this thesis aims to learn how professors teach multicultural literature to traditional undergraduate students and how students respond to these courses. I focus on pedagogical scholarship that notes the structure, challenges, and impact of teaching this genre in K-12 and higher education classrooms. My conclusions provide educators with a repertoire of teaching strategies, materials, and student feedback to help students critically respond to living in a multicultural nation and world. These conclusions also lessen a gap in research, as there is significantly less published information on teaching …

"Writing Unspeakable Things: Speechlessness, Abjection, And The Ethics/Aesthetics Of (Not) Representing Sexual Violence In Three Korean American "Comfort Women' Novels", M Laura Barberan Reinares
Publications and Research
This article analyzes “comfort women” novels by the Korean American authors Therese Park, Nora Okja Keller, and Chang-rae Lee in terms of the ethics and aesthetics of representing sexual violence through language. I specifically look at these authors’ stylistic strategies to describe rape in writing and how they (more or less successfully) avoid voyeuristic portrayals of the “comfort women” by controlling the narrative point of view and relying on traumatic “speechlessness” and abjection. Building on relevant notions from the fields of photography, cinematography, philosophy, and psychoanalysis, this analysis suggests that in-progress representations of rape in language become a futile project …

This guide is intended as a resource for introductory technical writing course instructors to adapt an existing course to integrate OER resources, or, to build a new course with all-OER student resources. This guide was developed for the specific use of WR 227 instructors at Portland State University and across Oregon; however, the material in the guide or …

Through a literature review on nonprofit social media and internships, a series of qualitative interviews with interns and supervisors, and the researcher’s lived experiences as a social media intern, a handbook was developed for nonprofit social media internships. This guide is relevant to the specific experiences of nonprofit social media internships, includes advice on training, mentorship, and best practices, and finally, it incorporates further resources on …
"I Can Sing And Tell A Tale:" Perception And The Self-Reflexive Nature Of The Old English Poet, Danielle Williams
"I Can Sing And Tell A Tale:" Perception And The Self-Reflexive Nature Of The Old English Poet, Danielle Williams
English Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
More than one contemporary scholar has written about the “search” for the Anglo-Saxon oral poet. They consider historical texts and poetry and every other possible place where some record of who the Anglo-Saxon scop may have been might be found. Some claim to recognize the Old English poet by the end of their search while others declare the entire pursuit to be futile for lack of substantial evidence. This study is somewhat of a combination of the two. Each chapter does take part in the search for the Old English poet figure, but it is not for the sake of …

This Ain't Yo' Mama's Composition Class: Addressing Anti-Blackness By Implementing Anti-Racist Pedagogy, Sharanna B. Brown
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
Kyoko Kishimoto writes that those who practice anti-racist pedagogical practices are not only required to teach about race, but instead "teach about race and racism in a way that fosters critical analytical skills, which reveal the power relations behind racism and how race has been institutionalized in U.S. society to create and justify inequalities" (541). This is the work. And I have chosen to do it.
Steeped in anti-racist pedagogy “This Ain’t Yo’ Mama’s Composition Course” aims to explore the ways that writing classrooms can affirm students’ autonomy while simultaneously equipping them with skills that equate to “cultural capital.” Anti-racist …

The Mythic Circle
Is it just us, or was 2020-2021 the worst year of the past hundred years? Infections, deaths, lockdowns, and quarantines too long for human endurance just kept on keeping on, intensified by squabbles between proponents of collective health measures (masks, vaccines, social distancing) on one side and of individual personal liberties, regardless of the social and health impact, on the other. But through it all, artists continued to think, dream, and produce new work.

Exegesis In The Age Of Extremism: The Future Of Christianity And Literary Studies In Higher Education, Claudia Stokes
English Faculty Research
This essay examines the consequences of the Trump presidency on the study of literature and Christianity. Despite the recent defunding of the humanities and the widespread elimination of religious studies departments, the Trump presidency gave rise to the widespread use of exegetical modes of interpretation, with many of the tenets of post-structuralism entering the cultural mainstream. How-ever, the interpretive failures of Trump supporters demonstrate the vital national importance of the humanities and the importance of formal literary and interpretive instruction.

Background: Accessibility of digital materials within workplaces continues to be an issue that is not readily and completely addressed through legal compliance and institutional policy. Despite the lack of marked improvement in digital accessibility, many continue to pursue a policy approach to accessibility, including checklists and guidelines. Literature review: Despite the attention paid to accessibility and surrounding issues by scholars in the field of technical and professional communication, little direction has been given to help practitioners advocate for accessibility in the workplace. Research question: Can common ground between institutional values and accessibility be discovered and leveraged to motivate value-driven accessibility? …

Artistic response is the process by which readers create concrete representations of their transactions with a text through artistic means, including visual arts (e.g. drawing, sculpture, and painting), drama, and music. Research has shown that artistic response helps students form meaningful relationships with texts, as it is a tool that encourages students to enter, explore, make connections, and enjoy stories and characters. In this article we describe an artistic response strategy that we developed and implemented. Recognizing that today’s students often know and interact with the world through social media and memes, we draw on this cultural tool to leverage …
