Qualitative Textual Analysis Of The Portrayal Of Mexican Americans In Children’S Picture Books, Victoria Quijas Navarro Jan 2001

Qualitative Textual Analysis Of The Portrayal Of Mexican Americans In Children’S Picture Books, Victoria Quijas Navarro

Graduate Research Papers

The Latino population is predicted to be the largest minority in the United States by the year 2005. The largest group in the Latino population is Mexican Americans. Children's picture books portraying Mexican Americans can provide Mexican American children a means of connecting with their culture. Picture books are also a way for nonMexican Americans to learn about the culture. This research investigated three questions. What are the characteristics of Mexican American culture? What qualifies children's books as being representative of a culture? How do children's picture books about Mexican Americans reflect their culture? The researcher used qualitative, textual analysis …

St. Mary Of Egypt In Bl Ms Cotton Otho B. X: New Textual Evidence For An Old English Saint's Life, Linda M. Cantara

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Scholarship of the anonymous Old English prose Life of St. Mary of Egypt ranges from source studies and linguistic analyses to explorations of Anglo-Saxon female sexuality and comparisons to saints' lives translated by the monk Ælfric, but all of these studies have been based on either the text extant in BL MS Cotton Julius E. vii or on W. W. Skeat's edition of the Julius manuscript, Ælfric's Lives of Saints (1881-1900). There is, however, an as yet unedited fragmentary copy of the Old English Mary of Egypt in BL MS Cotton Otho B. x, a manuscript severely damaged by fire …

“Sketches Of Spain”: Richard Wright's Pagan Spain And African-American Representations Of The Hispanic, Guy J. Reynolds

Department of English: Faculty Publications

At the start of Pagan Spain (1957), Richard Wright recalled a 1946 conversation with Gertrude Stein; she encouraged him to visit Spain: “ ‘You'll see what the Western world is made of. Spain is primitive, but lovely. ’ ” Wright meditated on his fascination with that country, an obsession rooted in the Civil War's political upheaval: “The fate of Spain hurt me, haunted me; I was never able to stifle a hunger to understand what had happened there and why” (PS, 10). Wright wrote as a leftist, as a political writer who had published anti-Franco articles. In his …

Renaissance Courtesy And Book Vi Of The Faerie Queene, Matthew S. Martini Nov 2000

Renaissance Courtesy And Book Vi Of The Faerie Queene, Matthew S. Martini

Dissertations and Theses

Book VI of Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene, with its chivalric and pastoral characteristics, has confounded critics for several generations. This thesis provides a chronological reading of Book VI that addresses many of its problems in the context of conduct manuals such as Baldassare Castiglione's The Book of the Courtier and Stefano Guazzo's Civile Conversation. Rather than dismiss many of the tensions and contradictions in the text, this study seeks to embrace them by interpreting them with Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of dialogism as expressed in The Dialogic Imagination.

In chapter one, connections are made between the opening …

Atheism And Sadism: Nietzsche And Woolf On Post-God Discourse, Michael Lackey Oct 2000

Atheism And Sadism: Nietzsche And Woolf On Post-God Discourse, Michael Lackey

English Publications

In the western world, twentieth-century literature has been an extended experience of atheism and sadism. Lest this claim not seem dogmatic enough, let me put it differently, more boldly: this century has been an attempt to ingest and digest Nietzsche, to cannibalize the Übermensch philologist, first in order to comprehend the strength and depth of his vision, but second to enact his philosophy. Were this a standard academic essay, I would define atheism and sadism, identify and analyze a few texts that best corroborate my thesis, and draw some conclusions about the twentieth century. But sadism and atheism are not …

Constructing The Criollo Archive: Subjects Of Knowledge In The Bibliotheca Mexicana And The Rusticatio Mexicana, Antony Higgins Oct 2000

Constructing The Criollo Archive: Subjects Of Knowledge In The Bibliotheca Mexicana And The Rusticatio Mexicana, Antony Higgins

Purdue University Press Books

This book constitutes an attempt to theorize the process of the emergence, in eighteenth-century New Spain, of a position of intellectual subjectivity differentiated from that established by the regime of Spanish imperial authority. The principal concern has been to trace how certain groups of Criollo intellectuals try to construct such discourses, paradoxically, out of the framework of available European systems of knowledge and representation. In this fashion, it was sought to discern the outline of an ideological program for Criollo political and cultural hegemony in the eighteenth-century.

Welcome to Mythcon XXXI, situated in the heart of Hawai'i's version of "The Cracks of Doom. " It comes complete with the grayness and the mists, the blasted earth, and a belly full of hot lava-a power even Gandalf couldn't control. But while Frodo a·nd Sam toiled we will celebrate, while their spirits dropped our spirits will rise, and while they were alone we will share together. The most powerful word in Hawai 'i is Aloha. It encompasses a generosity of spirit, and a love of the land, and people. This is what we hope you will find here. You …

"I Give You Back": Memory, Language, And Transformation In Joy Harjo's Poetry, Janice May Gould May 2000

"I Give You Back": Memory, Language, And Transformation In Joy Harjo's Poetry, Janice May Gould

English Language and Literature ETDs

The poetry of Native American poet Joy Harjo, one of our living and pre-eminent poets in the United States, is a rich blend of oral and contemporary written traditions.

This dissertation examines three themes in her work: memory, language, and transformation. Each of these elements is present in Native oral ceremonial traditions where memory functions to return individuals and communities to a sense of wholeness and happiness; where language serves as a powerful tool to enact healing; and where spiritual (and sometimes physical) transformation of self and community is made possible through the juncture of all three elements. Harjo's poetry …

Poems As Mnemonic Devices To Aid Grammar Recall, Carolin A. Metzger May 2000

Poems As Mnemonic Devices To Aid Grammar Recall, Carolin A. Metzger

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study was implemented to explore the extent to which students' performance on grammar editing exams might be affected by exposure to poems used as mnemonic devices intended to aid recall of grammar rules. The poems were used as mnemonic tools to assist subjects memory of specific grammar points. The place of grammar in writing instruction, the use of mnemonics, and the use of rhyme and rhythm are reviewed. The subjects for this study came from developmental level classes at the university level and from advanced level English as Second Language classes. The results emphasize the need for teacher-student interaction …

Grotesque Circumstances: The Bildungsroman Of Deformation In Contemporary Irish Literature, Margaret Mckimmey-Harada Apr 2000

Grotesque Circumstances: The Bildungsroman Of Deformation In Contemporary Irish Literature, Margaret Mckimmey-Harada

English Language and Literature ETDs

Using the recent novels of Edna O'Brien, Roddy Doyle, and Patrick McCabe, I examine the ways in which they confront contemporary Irish identity through the structure of the Bildungsroman. This dissertation focuses on the following novels: O'Brien's Time and Tide (1992) and Down by the River (1997); Doyle's Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha (1993) and The Woman Who Walked Into Doors (1996); McCabe's The Butcher Boy (1992), The Dead School (1995), and Breakfast on Pluto (1998). Though coming-of-age novels typically chronicle a youthful protagonist's development, I argue that these authors use the traditional features of the genre to show the …
