The Ecology Of Middle Earth, Marcella Juhren Dec 1970

The Ecology Of Middle Earth, Marcella Juhren

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Analysis of Middle-earth’s environmental equivalents to our world, by climate and dominant vegetation. Notes that Tolkien’s descriptions of the ecology of his Secondary World must be based on “years of close and thoughtful observation of nature”—particularly when describing transitions from one ecological niche to another. Concludes with an “ecological report” on Middle-earth. Covers geography, geology, and plant life in great detail.

Generation Ebb: A Novella, Charlene M. Eblen Jan 1969

Generation Ebb: A Novella, Charlene M. Eblen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Two things essential for the development of experimental science are the cooperation of many workers and the keeping of careful records of their work. A major problem for the experimental scientists of the seventeenth century was the lack of both cooperative effort and systematic records. The scientific work early in this century was scattered, intermittent, and recorded, if at all, haphazardly. The purpose of this paper is to show how Henry Oldenburg, during his first five years as secretary to the Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge, developed patterns of communication which brought the experimental philosophers together to …

Milton And Cambridge : A New Look At An Old Attitude, Roy S. Riner Aug 1968

Milton And Cambridge : A New Look At An Old Attitude, Roy S. Riner

Master's Theses

From the insights cleaned from current research into John Milton's years as an undergraduate and a graduate student at Cambridge University, this writer has found an overwhelming amount of material dedicated to pointing out Milton's total lack of affection for that university. For the most part, those statements bearing on Milton's dislike for Cambridge are unequivocal. For example, one scholar has remarked that John Milton departed from the University in 1632 "weary and disguised" with the medieval, unbearable antiquated methods of the place. That same scholar continues with the statement that Milton's attitude toward Cambridge was "uniformly unfriendly" and that …

The Individual And The Problem Of Self-Definition In Faulkner : Isolation And Gesture In Light In August, The Sound And The Fury, Absalom, Absalom!, And As I Lay Dying, Betty Jean Seymour

Master's Theses

Perhaps the primary task of the writer is the communication of that which is most significant in human experience. This paper has grown out of an interest in contemporary literature as an expression of this function. Literature, like other art forms, can appraise, analyze, reflect, and, sometimes, provide direction for, the plight of modern man.

The Use Of Mythology In Thomas Hardy's Tess Of The D'Urbervilles, John Francis Mcguire Jan 1966

The Use Of Mythology In Thomas Hardy's Tess Of The D'Urbervilles, John Francis Mcguire

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles a relationship exists between the symbolical sacrifice of Tess at Stonehenge and her association with fertility, ritual, and mythic cycles of seasonal death and rebirth. Because Hardy associates Tess with fertility, reproductive power, and seasonal change, she personifies nature and closely resembles the earth mother goddess Demeter. Ritual is evident in her participation in the May-Day club revel, in her intended suicide under the mistletoe, and in her manner of killing Alec d1Urberville. Myth cycle culminates with a fertility ritual in the powerful sacrificial incident at Stonehenge, for, although Tess physically dies at …

Metaphysical Conceits Involving Death In The Writings Of John Donne, Eleanor B. Baird Jan 1963

Metaphysical Conceits Involving Death In The Writings Of John Donne, Eleanor B. Baird

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Much has been written in the past fifty years about John Donne and his work. His troubled life and enigmatic writings have made him seem a kindred spirit to a confused age. To our day the dissonant, abrupt, and calculatedly reckless style and the concern with the harsh realities of love and death have relevance which heretofore had been misunderstood or ignored.
