Kate Chopin In Transition From Local To Naturalism, Roselyn Cornwell Hines Apr 1976

Kate Chopin In Transition From Local To Naturalism, Roselyn Cornwell Hines

Theses & Honors Papers

My thesis concentrates on Mrs.Katherine O'Flaherty Chopin, a Southerner who published between 1889 and 1899, and who, for years, was considered an obsolete Local Colorist. She is now enjoying a revival of interest which must be attributed to her importance as a writer who exhibited those precepts upon which modern literature is based - those found in the movements of Realism and Naturalism.

With literary roots in the Local Color mode,Mrs.Chopin's early works exemplify, to some extent at least, all of its principles. While she falters somewhat in the dominant literary technique, we find the Local Colorist's emphasis on geography, …

An Otherwise Report, M. Q. Rice Feb 1976

An Otherwise Report, M. Q. Rice

Faculty Honor Lectures

In defense of myself and the Honors Committee I accept this assignment as a tribute for something, possibly for setting a new record as a hunger artist or for simply staying in town and reciting the penitential psalms daily for over 40 years. I have a sneaking suspicion that they may be exposing me for not being creative in the Greek sense of fulfilling the promise of one's birth. If I had got around to writing Pericles' funeral oration, Dostoevsky's "Grand Inquisitor," or E. E. Cummings' "What if a Much of a Which of a Wind," as I fully intended …

The Crux Of Merging Deltas: A Note On Alan Sillitoe, Robert S. Haller Jan 1975

The Crux Of Merging Deltas: A Note On Alan Sillitoe, Robert S. Haller

Department of English: Faculty Publications

First paragraph:

The English Writer Alan Sillitoe is, to most Americans, a man of two books (or movies): Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (with Albert Finney); and The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner (with Tom Courtenay). Indeed, most Americans do not know that he has produced a book a year since 1959 (when The Long Distance-Runner came out), including eight other novels, three books of poems, two collections of short stories, one book of travel, one play, and one children's book. They know little about his life or the progress of his career, about his international connections or his present …

Structural Cohesion In Arnold Bennett's Clayhanger Trilogy, Laura Maurine Green Jan 1975

Structural Cohesion In Arnold Bennett's Clayhanger Trilogy, Laura Maurine Green

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper will demonstrate how Bennett’s “circumstantial” history of his age, as it streams by the reader, is controlled, analyzed, and interpreted. The framework of characters and events stand firm, their foundations solid in the systematic working-out, through symbolism and irony, of Bennett’s conviction that there is a “cause and effect” relationship between the physical environment and the character and sociological evolution and the character. Bennett writes that “the spirit of literature… enforces a moral wisdom by tracing everywhere of cause and effect.” The structures of characters and events are raised, reinforced, illuminated, inspected, and photographed through the use of …

Conrad's "Nostromo" And The Imagery Of Despair, Terry Lane Kimble Jan 1974

Conrad's "Nostromo" And The Imagery Of Despair, Terry Lane Kimble

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Conrad ' s significance as a major novelist having been well established by the present time , one may justly turn attention to a consideration of whether Nostromo, his masterpiece, deserves the paradoxical ranking critics generally accord it as a flawed and essentially inexplicable work of genius . Nostromo is the focus of the present study, which establishes by extensive analysis that Conrad employs a complex imagistic technique, manifesting thereby not only thematic content but also compositional method. Basic to this technique is the tend ency to view a subject in terms of polarities , around which to cluster images …

Male Maturation In Selected Fiction Of Dylan Thomas, Gretchen Jacobson Jan 1973

Male Maturation In Selected Fiction Of Dylan Thomas, Gretchen Jacobson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Dylan Thomas wrote numerous short stories which reveal a completely different aspect of his writing and thinking from that of the highly symbolic, often existential nature of his poetry. He was able, in his short stories, to recall and tell the many-faceted feelings of a boy as he grows from early childhood into young adulthood. Along with the pleasures and hurts experienced, the mischief involved in, and the mistakes made in the process of maturing, Dylan Thomas reveals an underlying humorous, irreverent quality and attitude which seems to imply that the one who does not take himself too seriously can …

The Echo Structure Of Death As A Regenerative Force In Clea, The Fourth Book Of Lawrence Durrel's [Sic] Alexandria Quartet, Mareta Suydam Tucker Jan 1972

The Echo Structure Of Death As A Regenerative Force In Clea, The Fourth Book Of Lawrence Durrel's [Sic] Alexandria Quartet, Mareta Suydam Tucker

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

One of the principal techniques used by Lawrence Durrell in creating the rich and varied Alexandria Quartet is echo structure. Echo structures of similar construction (ether directly stated or implied) suffuse the text with additional meanings and achieve thematic significance and completeness.

The symbolism of death and a new birth, or rebirth is a dominant means of conveying this in the Quartet, and particularly in Clea, its fourth and final book. Echo structure is created by the writer’s establishing actions, images, archetypes, allusions and characters in an early portion of the Quartet and generally suspending that entity until changed or …

Shaw's Comic Tone : From Laughter To The Broken Harp String, R. K. Thomas Apr 1971

Shaw's Comic Tone : From Laughter To The Broken Harp String, R. K. Thomas

Honors Theses

George Bernard Shaw's literary career lasted over seventy years. He wrote prolifically. The most complete collection of his work, the Ayot St. Lawrence Edition, runs to over thirty-one volume, yet it is not all inclusive. His efforts were always motivated by the desire to expand and expound his social and political philosophy. Although the canon of Shavian criticism approaches his motives from a wide of variety of angles and avenues, Shaw singled out "passion of pure political Weltverbesserungwahn (worldbettermentcrase)" as his "own devouring malady." Defining his artistic objectives as conveying a "feeling" to an audience and making "them sympathetic with …

An Analysis Of The Life And Works Of Charles Lamb, Donna Goettsch Jan 1971

An Analysis Of The Life And Works Of Charles Lamb, Donna Goettsch

Graduate Research Papers

Charles Lamb was an essayist held in the highest esteem in the English literary world. He was a man small in stature and fragile in appearance, but strong in character and quick of wit. Colleagues often described him as a shy, gentle man. lamb himself did not like to be depicted as a gentle person, because to him it held Shakespeare's connotation of the word poor spirited. This Lamb definitely was not. When he was among friends, his humor was witty, and puns rolled from his lips the instant they formulated in his mind. He loved life and had no …

Three Illustrators: William Blake, George Cruikshank And Maurice Sendak, Patricia Twait Jan 1971

Three Illustrators: William Blake, George Cruikshank And Maurice Sendak, Patricia Twait

Graduate Research Papers

Children's books have been a source of delight to them; they have evoked both tears and laughter from young audiences. The illustrator has come to be a partner in the creation of hooks for children. The term children's literature now includes the efforts of both illustrators and authors. It was not always so. For many years children read adult books because there was no such thing as a storybook for children. When they came, the books for children were dull fare. They were moralizing with few, if any, illustrations.

Gradually illustrators began illustrating books specifically for children. The literary content …
