The Theory Of Elective Affinities In The Dramatic Love Poems Of Robert Browning, Harry C. Tartt Jan 1969

The Theory Of Elective Affinities In The Dramatic Love Poems Of Robert Browning, Harry C. Tartt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Arts degree in 1969, examines Robert Browning's treatment of romantic love in his dramatic poems through the theoretical lens of elective affinities, which is a concept borrowed from chemistry and first applied to human relationships by Johann Wolfgang Goethe in his 1809 novel Wahlverwandtschaften (Elective Affinities). The study traces the origins of the chemical theory of elective affinities from seventeenth-century analytical chemists including Hermann Boerhaave and Torbern Bergmann through Goethe's literary application of the concept to four lovers whose passions operate as blind, irresistible forces …

Whitman's Concept Of Brotherhood : His Motivation In Advocating Brotherhood And The Prerequisites For Brotherhood, Frank M. Morgan Jan 1969

Whitman's Concept Of Brotherhood : His Motivation In Advocating Brotherhood And The Prerequisites For Brotherhood, Frank M. Morgan

Honors Theses

There is a cause and effect relationship between brotherhood and almost all other proposals of Whitman. The relation between brotherhood and Whitman's metaphysical beliefs or religion is mroe complicated than a cause and effect one, and deserves more space later. With the understanding that the cause and effect situation works two ways, brotherhood both acting upon and being affected by other elements of Whitman's great plan for mankind, I shall attempt in this paper to explore these relationships from the point of view that chooses for discussion those elements that are necessitites for or impedimetns to the institution of brotherhood.

An Analysis Of The Fourth Voyage Of Gulliver's Travels And Its Relevance To The Twentieth Century, Angelo Rodriguez Jan 1969

An Analysis Of The Fourth Voyage Of Gulliver's Travels And Its Relevance To The Twentieth Century, Angelo Rodriguez

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Any work of art, by definition, is so designated because it speaks to all generations, irrespective of time or place, and regardless of artistic, political, economic, or ideological fads. To accept a work as art with anything less than these universalities is blind acceptance and pure idolatry. Each generation must determine the validity of the label art by determining the relevance of the work to its own generations. Unless a work of art can successfully meet such a test, the label is no more than a gentleman's agreement among self-designated arbiters of taste. Two recent critics, writing on the philosophy …

The Journal As Literary Form, William Bingham Dec 1968

The Journal As Literary Form, William Bingham

English Language and Literature ETDs

The problem with which the dissertation deals is this: does the Journal offer a possible alternative to the conventional novel form in the twentieth century literature. The problem entails a study of the process by which a form meant for purely private uses becomes, through successive steps, a public form of art. The procedure employed involves keeping distinct six different types of Journal. The first and second chapters deal with the problems of making discriminations between these six different types. Out of these distinctions some idea of a tradition in the writing of the Journal can be arrived at, and …

Thomas Hardy's Novels Of The 1870'S: A Study Of English And American Criticism From 1871 To 1967, Mary Frances Demourol

English Language and Literature ETDs

Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) published six novels in the 1870’s: Desperate Remedies (1871); Under the Greenwood Tree (1872); A Pair of Blue Eyes (1873); Far from the Madding Crowd (1874); The Hand of Ethelberta (1876); The Return of the Native (1878). This study is divided into four chapters according to the four periods of criticism of Hardy’s earliest novels: first, the immediate critical reception between 1871 and 1879; second, the initial retrospective evaluation between 1879 and 1898; third, criticism in the period of apotheosis, that is, from the publication in 1898 of the novelist’s first volume of poetry, through his fame …

"Nature's Primitive Gifts":A Study Of Wordsworth's Visual Perception., Donald Richard King Oct 1968

"Nature's Primitive Gifts":A Study Of Wordsworth's Visual Perception., Donald Richard King

English Language and Literature ETDs

As I indicate in the introduction to this study, the tendency in Wordsworth criticism has been to make a fragile, spiritual mystery of the poet by stressing the transcendental nature of his work. It seems to me, however, that he is a poet solidly grounded in the reality of the external world. His interest in the concrete reality of things can be clearly determined, I believe, by an examination of his visual apprehension of the external world as it is expressed in his work. This study is an effort at such an examination.
