Design And Validation Of A Novel Patterned Microfluidic Culture Platform For Hipsc-Cm Maturation, Anisia Gabriela Țiplea
Design And Validation Of A Novel Patterned Microfluidic Culture Platform For Hipsc-Cm Maturation, Anisia Gabriela Țiplea
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Adult cardiomyocytes (CMs) are among the most challenging cells to culture in vitro, given their poor adherence to plastic culture wells and poor maturation outside the native extracellular matrix (Narkar et al., 2022). Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived CMs (hiPSC-CMs) offer a viable alternative to study heart development and disease progression. While not comparable to adult CMs in their maturity (Narkar et al., 2022), they mimic the clinical phenotypes of heart failure and are more feasible to culture. Nevertheless, hiPSC-CMs require specialized culture conditions that cannot be achieved with 2D static culturing, which fail to replicate native tissue environments (X. …

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The primary objective of this study is to measure the current service time at a U.S. automobile service center, with the aim of reducing waste and optimizing service operations through time study and simulation modeling. Inefficiencies in those service centers increase service time and labor costs, reduce service quality, and reduce workshop productivity, thereby increasing customer waiting time. In this study, real-world shop floor data were collected from a single service center, namely Jiffy Lube. Over the course of ten working days, 205 vehicle data points were acquired. Service time, bay time, and overall process time were computed and examined …

Early Stem Impressions, Student Engagement, And Readiness For Digitalization, Myron Sheu
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This study examines how early impressions of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) shape business students’ learning behaviors and, ultimately, their readiness for organizational digitalization. Focusing on gender differences, subgroup identities, and perceived obstacles, the analysis uses survey data processed through correlation matrices, regression models, and subgroup heatmaps to trace the relationship between initial attitudes toward STEM and subsequent engagement patterns. The findings reveal consistent links between positive early impressions and active participation in structured STEM activities, along with gender-based distinctions in action preferences. Subgroup analyses further uncover nuanced patterns where stereotypes or perceived barriers correspond with reduced engagement. Collectively, …

The Crowdfunding Paradox In Crisis: Rising Funder Demand Vs. Declining Entrepreneur Supply, Dan Liu, Guangzhi Shang, Cynthia Fan Yang
The Crowdfunding Paradox In Crisis: Rising Funder Demand Vs. Declining Entrepreneur Supply, Dan Liu, Guangzhi Shang, Cynthia Fan Yang
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This study investigates how the crowdfunding marketplace responds to major crises, focusing on behavioral shifts among funders and entrepreneurs. Results show a dual impact on platform dynamics. On the demand side, funders become more engaged, with notable increases in the number of backers, average contributions, and total pledge amounts. This heightened activity suggests stronger altruistic motivations, as individuals view crowdfunding as a way to support others during difficult times. On the supply side, however, entrepreneurs act more cautiously, leading to a decline in new project launches. This drop likely reflects increased risk aversion and uncertainty as creators navigate volatile conditions. …

Adaptive Self-Attention For Enhanced Segmentation Of Adult Gliomas In Multi-Modal Mri, Evan P. Savaria, Jiangwen Sun
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Every year there are an estimated 80,000–90,000 new glioma cases, highlighting the need for reliable imaging-based decision support. Although deep learning has improved tumor sub-region segmentation, many state-of-the-art models fail to fully capture complementary information across T1, T1Gd, T2, and FLAIR MRI modalities and often operate as “black boxes,” limiting physician trust when precise delineation is critical for surgical planning, radiation targeting, and treatment monitoring. To address these limitations, we propose AIMS, an Adaptive Integrated Multi-Modal Segmentation framework that maintains modality-specific feature streams and employs adaptive self-attention within a hierarchical CNN-Transformer architecture to prioritize and fuse multi-modal MRI features. We …

With the rise of online misinformation and AI-generated text, understanding human perception of news truthfulness is critical. In this study, we examine visual attention and cognitive processing using eye-tracking measures as individuals read fake and real news articles sharing nearly identical structure and imagery, differing only in subtle textual changes. Using the public FakeNewsPerception dataset, we analyze advanced gaze measures, including scanpaths, AOI transitions, and luminance-corrected pupil measures, beyond basic gaze features, in relation to news truthfulness and perceived believability. Results show that, given the high fidelity of the fake news, readers exhibited comparable visual scanning patterns, attention allocation across …

Distributed Semi-Speculative Parallel Anisotropic Mesh Adaptation, Kevin Garner, Polykarpos Thomadakis, Nikos Chrisochoides
Computer Science Faculty Publications
This paper presents a distributed memory method for anisotropic mesh adaptation that is designed to avoid the use of collective communication and global synchronization techniques. In the presented method, meshing functionality is separated from performance aspects by utilizing a separate entity for each - a multicore cc-NUMA-based (shared memory) mesh generation software and a parallel runtime system that is designed to help applications leverage the concurrency offered by emerging high-performance computing (HPC) architectures. First, an initial mesh is decomposed and its interface elements (subdomain boundaries) are adapted on a single multicore node (shared memory). Subdomains are then distributed among the …

Developing sustainable, high-efficiency cooling technologies is vital to addressing 21st century energy challenges. This research focuses on magnetic refrigeration, an environmentally friendly cooling method utilizing the magnetocaloric effect to regulate temperature using magnetic fields. This approach offers greater energy efficiency than conventional vapor-compression systems by eliminating harmful refrigerants. The critical component is the regenerator, made of magnetocaloric material and transfers heat between the magnetic material and a fluid through parallel channels. Traditional designs such as packed beds of particles are prone to particle segregation, creating an undesirable pressure drop. The main goal of our research was to fix those flaws …

Estimating Sediment Properties Using A New Source Level Function For Wind-Driven Underwater Sound Derived From Long-Term Archival Data, S Bruce Martin, Martin Siderius
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Wind-driven breaking waves generate the background sound throughout the ocean. An accurate source level for wind-driven breaking waves is needed for estimating the ambient sound levels needed for sound exposure modeling, environmental assessments, and assessing the detection performance of sonars. Previous models applied a constant roll-off of sound levels at -16 dB/decade at all wind speeds, and these models' source levels were flat at frequencies below ∼1000 Hz due to a lack of measurements. Here, we analyzed 16 long-term archival datasets with limited anthropogenic sound sources to estimate the wind-driven source level down to 100 Hz. We estimated the site-specific …

Scalar Source Localization Using Multi-Sensor Domains Of Dependence In Turbulent Channel Fow, Zejian You, Xiaowei Zhu, Qi Wang
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Tracking hazardous events such as wildfire smoke, coastal oil spills, or chemical releases in natural environments is complicated by turbulent dispersion and molecular diffusion. This study presents a method to localize pollutant sources rapidly and accurately using infinite time-averaged measurements from a multi-sensor network, leveraging the duality between mean forward and adjoint scalar fields. The forward-adjoint duality states that measurements at the sensor (forward feld) are equal to the adjoint field at the source, providing crucial spatial information about the source. Consequently, the adjoint scalar fields can be interpreted as the domain of dependence for the sensor observations [1, 2]. …

Engineering Disorder, Defects, And Electrical Transport For High-Performance Thermoelectric Fe2val Heusler Alloys, James Russell Taylor Iv
Engineering Disorder, Defects, And Electrical Transport For High-Performance Thermoelectric Fe2val Heusler Alloys, James Russell Taylor Iv
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Fe2VAl is a promising low-temperature thermoelectric material for waste-heat energy conversion because it is easily processed and comprised of earth-abundant, non-toxic, and low-cost elements. However, viability for applications faces two major challenges: high thermal conductivity and low p-type Seebeck coefficients. This primarily experimental work aims to address these issues through extrinsic and self-doping, point-defect and disorder generation through thermal and electrical processing, disordered and metastable phase composition quantification, and comparison of transport measurements to modeled electronic features.
An accessible phase quantification method was developed for bulk Fe2VAl using laboratory X-ray diffraction equipment to compare thermoelectric properties …

Photothermal Excitation And Optical Interferometric Readout Of Mos2 Nanomechanical Resonators, Sadia Afrin
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as promising candidates for nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) due to their exceptional mechanical, optical, and electrical properties. Among these materials, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has attracted considerable interest for nanomechanical resonator applications because of its low mass density, high mechanical strength, and semiconducting nature. This thesis presents the fabrication, theoretical modeling, and experimental characterization of suspended MoS2 drumhead resonators. The devices were fabricated by mechanically exfoliating MoS2 flakes from bulk MoS2 crystals and transferring selected flakes onto pre-patterned substrates using a dry-transfer process. Mechanical resonance was excited through photothermal actuation using a modulated blue laser, while device …
Pseudo-Boiling Of Supercritical Co2 In A Parallel-Flow Microchannel And A Micro-Jets Impingement Device And Single-Phase And Two-Phase Heat Transfer Of Subcritical Co2 Jets, Pranzal Ahmed
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is gaining attention as a low-toxicity, zero-ozone-depletion refrigerant with a global warming potential of 1, making it an attractive alternative to synthetic HFCs/HFOs. Near its critical point, CO2's thermophysical properties change sharply with small shifts in temperature and pressure — a behavior that can be exploited to enhance heat transfer in trans-critical power cycles and electronics cooling. This dissertation experimentally investigates heat transfer during the pseudo-boiling of supercritical CO2 in a parallel-flow microchannel and a micro-jet impingement device, alongside CO2 flow boiling and single-phase water heat transfer in micro-jet impingement. Using microfluidic devices instrumented with embedded resistance …
Effects Of Back-Pressure On Pseudo-Shock Systems, Emil C. Alunno
Effects Of Back-Pressure On Pseudo-Shock Systems, Emil C. Alunno
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
The isolator of a scramjet engine houses a pseudo-shock, a compressive flow structure that raises the static pressure and decelerates the incoming supersonic flow for efficient combustion while shielding the inlet from the elevated pressure downstream. Under sufficient back pressure the leading shock bifurcates and forms a shock train followed by a shockless mixing region, and the resulting system oscillates even under nominally steady conditions; this unsteadiness distorts the flow, can drive the pseudo-shock out of the isolator and unstart the inlet. This thesis experimentally examines how a pseudo-shock in a constant-area isolator at a measured entrance Mach number of …

A simplified steady RANS-based numerical study of reacting flow in solid-fuel scramjet combustors is presented to evaluate the ability of commercial CFD frameworks to reproduce key features observed in experimental test sections. The work focuses on solid PMMA fuel in two supersonic combustor configurations: a cavity-assisted flameholding combustor and a variable-angle diverging combustor. The cavity combustor is analyzed as a baseline case and results are compared directly with experimental data. Three combustor geometry states corresponding to ignition, early-burning, and steady-burning conditions are investigated. Meshes are assessed through a systematic grid refinement method to establish grid independence. A novel variable-angle diverging …
Connecting The Existing Fiber Infrastructure To The Future With Antiresonant Hollow Core Fibers, Timothy Bate
Connecting The Existing Fiber Infrastructure To The Future With Antiresonant Hollow Core Fibers, Timothy Bate
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Optical fiber systems based on solid-core silica waveguides underpin modern telecommunications, high-power laser delivery, precision sensing, and coherent optical systems. However, nonlinear effects, material absorption, and thermal limitations within silica increasingly constrain further scaling in both optical power and transmission performance. Antiresonant hollow-core fibers provide a promising alternative by guiding light predominantly in air, substantially reducing nonlinear interactions, latency, and optical damage while enabling transmission regimes inaccessible to conventional solid-core fibers. Despite rapid advances in antiresonant hollow-core fiber attenuation and power handling, one of the largest remaining barriers to widespread adoption is reliable integration with the existing solid-core fiber ecosystem. …
Flow Field Characterization Of The Hyperreact Vitiated Hypersonic Wind Tunnel, Erik R. Fernandez
Flow Field Characterization Of The Hyperreact Vitiated Hypersonic Wind Tunnel, Erik R. Fernandez
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Reliable interpretation of hypersonic ground-test data requires knowledge of the thermochemical state delivered to the test section, especially in combustion-heated facilities where the gas is chemically altered before nozzle expansion. This thesis investigates the HyperReact vitiated hypersonic wind tunnel using the effective specific-heat ratio, γeff, as an experimentally inferred indicator of the coupled chemical and gas-dynamic behavior of hydrogen-air vitiated flow. HyperReact produces high stagnation temperatures through hydrogen-air combustion before expanding the mixture through interchangeable converging-diverging nozzles. During this expansion, temperature-dependent specific heats, molecular-weight changes, finite-rate chemistry, and internal energy relaxation can modify the relationship between Mach number, pressure ratio, …
