During World War II, the Ordnance Department was one of the army technical services. There were a number of technical services including the Chemical Warfare Service, the Army Medical Department, the Corps of Engineers, the Quartermaster Corps, the Signal Corps, and the Transportation Corps. The technical services were bureaus providing weapons, equipment, and services to the Army. They managed the careers of officers in their corresponding branches, and organized special military units. They also ran schools to train individual and military units in their specialties.

It has been arranged to permit analysis and comparison of building trends since 1900, both in the state and in individuals counties. Such a study often reveals areas in which effective educational programs could be developed and indicates the phases of such programs which are needed most.

Unfortunately, complete 1945 figures are not available yet, but space has been left for them so that they may be added when released by the Census Bureau.

Research Projects C-14 and C-15 were set up as purely laboratory studies with the same objective; that is, to study the affect upon the strength and durability of normal portland cement concrete by supplementing portions of standard concrete sand with variable amounts of "Fine" sand (sands passing Size No. 30 sieve). This investigation is not correlated with any Highway Department field projects. Project C-14 was begun June 16, 1944 and test completed April 20, 1945. Project C-15 was begun August 2, 1944 and tests were completed August 1, 1945.

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Research Project C-18 was designed for the purpose of making comparisons of the bond characteristics of commercial and prepared bars of reinforcing steel for horizontal and vertical positions of casting. The data includes tests made for bars cast in concretes of bot low and high slumps. The project was started March 26, 1945, but is not complete to the extent as was originally planned, since only two of the five types of bars employed have been cast in high slump concrete.

Nebraska Tractor Tests

All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary.

All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University.

Unless otherwise noted, each tractor was apparently in good condition at the end of the testing …

"The Bureau of Mines in conjunction with their Electrolytic Manganese Alloys program has developed a series of age hardening copper-manganese-nickel alloys having properties which compare favorably with those of copper-beryllium alloys...An unusual and highly desirable characteristic of these alloys is their insensitiveness to rate of cooling from the solution temperature. Air cooled and water quenched samples will have identical time hardness curves on being aged. Instead of requiring closely controlled conditions characteristic of many age hardening alloys, these alloys cannot be subjected to a thermal mechanical handling which will prevent hardening on their being subsequently heated to the aging temperature. …

"There is no satisfactory method of concentrating the finely disseminated oxide ores of zinc. Gravity methods of concentrating such ores may be used for coarsely crystalline materials in which the zinc material is free at approximately 10- to 35-mesh or coarser. In addition, gravity methods of concentration do not give a satisfactory separation on those ores in which the gangue mineral is small. Fluctuation in the number of farms since the start of the century reflects economic trends, drouth effects and the results of increasing mechanization, particularly since 1935.

The 1945 figures also show the influence of land taken out of production for use as air bases, ordnance plants and ammuition depots. No doubt some of this will be returned eventually to agricultural uses. Since the buildings were removed from this land during the war some new sets probably. will be constructed when individual ownership is obtained again. The following outline and comments are intended to serve as a general guide for future endeavors of the Highway Materials Research Laboratory, and as a basis for discussion among Members of the Research Board. For the most part these will provide a structure within which the details of individual projects may be classified and from which the subject matter for separate studies may be drawn. By preparing such a plan, but recognizing the need for deviation when unforeseen situations arise, it is hoped that the possibilities for maintaining a comprehensive but well integrated research program may be enhanced.

The data presented in this report were obtained in laboratory investigations of concrete mixes, the majority of which were correlated with Highway Department field projects. Practically all of this information has been recorded in vast reports on individual studies, but here these are combined and summarized in order to facilitate comnarisons between the results from tests similar in nature, and to provide wider distribution of these results.

Of the four research projects considered three were devoted to tests on beam specimens prepared in the field and sent to the Research Laboratory for analyses. The fourth was purely a laboratory study …

This thesis presents results on methods used to produce a hard surfaced wood product. The methods involve the parting of the wood fibers on the surface by a special serrating tool, followed by surface impregnation and final curing. The serrations on the wood surface produce an artificial grain upon curing. A preliminary investigation was made to improve the rot-resistance of wood by gaseous treatment. Results of such treatments show some limited success with formaldehyde on yellow poplar and warrant further study. An investigation was made to find a substitute for teak wood used on submarine decking. A number of combinations …
