Investigation Of Field And Laboratory Methods For Evaluating Subgrade Support In The Design Of Highway Flexible Pavements, Robert F. Baker, William B. Drake
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Four different methods of evaluating subgrade support under flexible pavements were studied: (1) Field CBR; (2) North Dakota Cone; (3) Bearing Plates; and (4) Laboratory CBR.
Approximately 435 miles of flexible pavements in Kentucky were represented. The roads were selected so as to give a wide range in conditions of traffic, soil areas, and design. A total of 185 locations were investigated, and 338 cone tests, 291 field CBR's, and 117 series of plate tests were conducted. There were 178 subgrade samples for which the laboratory CBR test was conducted. Undisturbed samples for future triaxial tests were obtained at 21 …

This is a report of an investigation of a device developed for the purpose of reducing to a minimum the segregation of coarse aggregates during delivery from chutes or conveyors to bins and other storage or transportation facilities.
Producers and consumers are always confronted, more or less, with segregation of materials, but methods toward its elimination have been moderately successful at best. As a matter of fact, the most successful of those methods have been those that required placement and distribution of loads in bins, stockpiles, barges, and the like, rather than the use of mechanical devices for prevention of …

During the last war, with the increased demand for magnesium metal and the general disregard for costs, a number of plants were constructed for the production of magnesium by vacuum metallurgical methods. (Both the Carbothermic Process and the Pidgeon Ferrosilicon Process employ vacuum systems for the production of metallic Mg.)
At the close of the war several of the government built plants were forced to suspend operations because of the economic impossibility of producing magnesium in competition with the Dow Chemical Company. Nebraska Tractor Tests
All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary.
All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University.
Unless otherwise noted, each tractor was apparently in good condition at the end of the testing …

"A study of the literature and field operations indicates conclusively that squeeze cementing operations are performed almost exclusively as corrective measures in completing or working-over wells. The most common use is to correct for faulty cement operations during original well completions. Careful study of field operations indicate that in most cases formations are broken-down at pressures far less than that required to lift the overburden, and that large quantities of drilling mud and cement may be pumped into the well (and formations) at pressures less than that of the overburden. "The problems of a century old levee system have provided excellent research for the Corp of Engineers and others in the design and construction of earth dams for flood control, navigation and multi-purpose projects. A special problem on which valuable knowledge has been gained is that of seepage control. Plane table and pacing methods were used in the mapping of the individual areas, but an automobile traverse was used to tie the independent areas into a composite group that would be useful for the entire zone. All land marks, section corners, roads, fence lines, drainage, and geologic features were plotted in the field and later transferred to a master map.
