A Study Of Lime And Fly Ash With Regard To Soil Stabilization, James F. Hardymon Mar 1958

A Study Of Lime And Fly Ash With Regard To Soil Stabilization, James F. Hardymon

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The paving of roadways originally developed from the inadequacy of natural soils to support vehicles and pedestrian traffic. Thus a pavement serves as a nearly rigid covering which distributes otherwise highly concentrated surface loads over wider areas of the underlying soils, Most natural soils are deficient for direct roadway service unless such a covering is provided or unless the soil itself is solidified, concreted, or otherwise reinforced, Attempts to compensate soils for these inadequacies in order to minimize the thickness of pavement needed have developed into a specialized aspect of highway design and construction known as soil stabilization.

Comparative Laboratory Evaluation And Field Observations Of A Modified Class I Base, Loren H. Strunk Feb 1958

Comparative Laboratory Evaluation And Field Observations Of A Modified Class I Base, Loren H. Strunk

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A number of materials and methods have been used in the continuing search for a satisfactory initial bituminous treatment. Towards this end, three traffic bound roads were given initial treatment, in the summer of 1956, with three inches of Kentucky a Standard Class I Base mixture. The large size coarse aggregate -- either No. 36 or No. 48 stone -- in this mixture made the material difficult to work, however, and caused severe segregation during handling. Although a well integrated mixture of the type could have been compacted to about eight percent voids, the excessive segregation left many areas of …

Structural Analysis By Minimum Strain Energy Methods, John B. Heagler Jan 1958

Structural Analysis By Minimum Strain Energy Methods, John B. Heagler

Professional Degree Theses

"Analysis of structure has its conception for the engineer early in his formal education and follows a set sequency from solving for equilibrium in simple beams and free bodies to more complicated solutions for stresses and deflections in multiply redundant structures.

Difficulty arises for the engineer when he loses the sequence of the subject and finds himself memorizing formulas and methods of solution without a clear and concise understanding of the underlying fundamental principles involved in arriving at these formulae and methods of solution.

The Aircraft Structural Analyst finds himself in a relatively new field of engineering structural design. Here …

An Engineering Soil Survey Of Fayette County, Kentucky, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The need for soils data in the site selection, design, construction and maintenance of any major structure is generally appreciated by the engineer. The "rule of thumb" methods often used in developing smaller structures can prove unsatisfactory, or even disastrous, when applied to larger projects.

Spilitic Rocks And Mineral Deposits Jan 1958

Spilitic Rocks And Mineral Deposits

School of Mines and Metallurgy Bulletins

The principal results of research work on spilitic rocks and mineral deposits carried on since 1945 are briefly summarized. Emphasis is placed on the influence of the results on the theories of rock and ore genesis, particularly the change of "philosophy of exploration" based on the existence of hydromagmatic ore deposition. A re-classification of magmatic mineral deposits is offered.

Effect Of Concrete Shrinkage On Stresses In Reinforcing Steel, C. Raymond Nowacki Jan 1958

Effect Of Concrete Shrinkage On Stresses In Reinforcing Steel, C. Raymond Nowacki

Masters Theses

"Shrinkage is one of four phenomena that are considered as causing volume changes in concrete, the other three being creep, temperature change effects, and possible chemical disintegration. While all four are interrelated, the volume change due to loss of moisture is associated with the term shrinkage. Creep is the time-dependent change in volume resulting from external loads. A rise or fall of temperature will produce an expansion or contraction of concrete but also will affect the rate of shrinkage by increasing or decreasing the rate of moisture evaporation from the surface of the concrete.

In the design of concrete structures, …

The Development Of A Device To Replace The Oil Well Dynamometer, Jerry Bernard Overton Jan 1958

The Development Of A Device To Replace The Oil Well Dynamometer, Jerry Bernard Overton

Masters Theses

"The mechanical dynamometer is recognized as being a valuable tool in measuring resultant forces acting on the polished rod of an oil well pump. The dynamometer is used extensively to determine loads, torque, and horsepower. "It is also used to determine pump action and trouble-shoot for any seemingly abnormal pumping condition."

Although it is desirous to periodically make dynamometer studies, it is also very time consuming. Because of high labor costs, it has been almost discontinued by many companies. The author became convinced that a less costly method of obtaining the same information could be developed. This method was the …

Operational Characteristics Of A Small Sewage Oxidation Lagoon, Karlheinz C. Muhlbauer Jan 1958

Operational Characteristics Of A Small Sewage Oxidation Lagoon, Karlheinz C. Muhlbauer

Masters Theses

"With the rapidly increasing population in the United States the adequate disposal of sewage has become one of the major technical problems which the sanitary engineer has to solve. In most areas it is no longer acceptable practice to discharge domestic sewage or industrial waste products directly into streams or lakes because of the resulting pollution of the water, which may later be used for drinking or recreational purposes. Many larger cities have, therefore, adopted some method of sewage treatment which renders such wastes safe and unobjectionable before they are discharged into a lake or stream. Most of these methods …

Performance Parameters Of Low-Density Ammonium Nitrate Base Explosives; Experimental Results And J. Taylor's Method, Mohammad Azhari Warga-Dalem Jan 1958

Performance Parameters Of Low-Density Ammonium Nitrate Base Explosives; Experimental Results And J. Taylor's Method, Mohammad Azhari Warga-Dalem

Masters Theses

"Ammonium nitrate has been known to the explosive industry for a long time. Compelled by the ever increasing mining costs, in 1954 "Akremite" was introduced to the market. It is a simple carbonaceous ammonium nitrate mixture and is the cheapest explosive available to the open-pit operators.

During the following years considerable amount of research was done, resulting among others with the introduction of ammonium nitrate-hydrocarbon mixtures as an explosive. During the Second World War research was done toward the refinement of the hydrodynamic theory. Several methods of calculating the detonation velocities of the explosives were introduced: Brown (1942), Kistiakowski and …

Methods To Improve The Metallurgy Of Bolivian Tin Ores, Oscar Davila-Michel Jan 1958

Methods To Improve The Metallurgy Of Bolivian Tin Ores, Oscar Davila-Michel

Masters Theses

"Tin is a rare element; among the base metals it is one of the rarest. Although it was one of the first metals used by man and has been used since prehistoric time, the ore-dressing and metallurgical methods of tin are inefficient and very wasteful.

The only tin deposits of importance in the Americas are located in Bolivia, South America, and it is in Bolivia that the problems of tin metallurgy are greatest. More than 50% of the tin that is mined in Bolivia is lost in the tailing dumps of the beneficiation plants. In a country where the export …

Design Of Distillation Solvent Recovery System, Donald Empson Puyear Jan 1958

Design Of Distillation Solvent Recovery System, Donald Empson Puyear

Masters Theses

"With the advent or the atomic bomb during the summer of 1945 the opportunity for engineering colleges to provide an integrated course of study in the field of nuclear engineering was presented. This opportunity has been greatly enhanced by a policy of the Atomic Energy commission, granting funds to selected institutions for equipment necessary for successful instruction in this field. The Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, realizing the opportunity presented, has established a course of study in nuclear engineering in which the departments of Ceramic, Chemical, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering and Physics are taking an active part.

That portion …

Analysis Of Mining Mechanization In The Fluorspar Mine, Southern Illinois, Marangin Simatupang Jan 1958

Analysis Of Mining Mechanization In The Fluorspar Mine, Southern Illinois, Marangin Simatupang

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study is to analyze the underground mechanization in the fluorspar mines in Southern Illinois. The mining mechanization in this district is confronted with manifold problems which are typical of most small or medium size mines.

The ore reserve in each mine is not very large. The method of development had to be planned accordingly such as not to exceed the depreciative capacity of the deposit.

The ore bodies consist of thin bedded layers or small veins. This thickness controls the sizes of the equipment to be used.

The mining operations always lack skilled equipment operators. In …

Design Of Liquid-Liquid Extraction System, Mehdi Rahmani Fard Jan 1958

Design Of Liquid-Liquid Extraction System, Mehdi Rahmani Fard

Masters Theses

"The unit operation of liquid-liquid extraction has developed enormously in the last 20 years and is now recognized as one of the most important techniques for the physical separation and refining of industrial liquids. For years the conventional apparatus used for liquid-liquid extraction has been towers employing countercurrent flow of the liquids and equipped with various means to increase the interfacial area.

The countercurrent column consists of a tower through which flows a continuous phase while countercurrent to this flow is a stream of droplets (the dispersed phase). Provision is made for dispersing one phase with a settling region at …

Rheological Measurement Of A Starch Suspension As A Dilatant Fluid, Earl Edward Pape Jan 1958

Rheological Measurement Of A Starch Suspension As A Dilatant Fluid, Earl Edward Pape

Masters Theses

"The measurement of the rheological properties, consistency of viscosity and fluid type, necessary for system design calculations, has fallen behind the industrial applications for non-Newtonian fluids. In the petroleum industry in particular, the process of well flow stimulation known as Hydraulic Fracturing utilizes the properties of various non-Newtonian fluids to carry sand at high flow rates to the formation to be fractured. Other non-Newtonian fluids in the petroleum industry are Bentonite clay drilling fluids, whose unique gelling properties are helpful in suspending drill cuttings when the circulation of the fluid has ceased. In Newtonian liquids and gases the consistency is …
