Automatic Waterers For Day Old Chickens, P Smetana, W. Ward Jan 1961

Automatic Waterers For Day Old Chickens, P Smetana, W. Ward

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ONE of the most tedious and time consuming tasks on a poultry farm is the provision of water to chicks from day old up to the age of three or four weeks.

Most poultry farmers use half-gallon glass fonts with metal bases for the first few weeks, until the chicks are old enough to use the automatic watering system usually situated along one wall of the brooder house.

This cumbersome glass font system can be replaced by the cheap and easily installed automatic watering system described below. This system has already been adopted by several local poultry farmers.

Weed Control In Cereals : Aerial Spraying Trials, G R W Meadly Jan 1961

Weed Control In Cereals : Aerial Spraying Trials, G R W Meadly

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

SPRAYING cereal crops for weed control is now standard farming practice in Western Australia. Almost 500,000 acres of cereal crops, mainly wheat, are sprayed each year, and approximately three-quarters of this area is treated by aircraft.

Recent trials have shown that aerial application of 'extra low" volumes of hormone-like herbicides, with oil or water solvents, does not damage cereals if spraying is done at the right stage of growth.

Effects Of Solids On Friction Factor In A Sand-Water Mixture, Frank J. Capek Jan 1961

Effects Of Solids On Friction Factor In A Sand-Water Mixture, Frank J. Capek

Masters Theses

"At the present time various industries in both the United States and Europe are very interested in using pipelines as a means of transporting solids. The pumping of solids in pipelines isn't new, however, many of the pipelines in use today were constructed on an empirical basis. This is primarily due to the lack of knowledge concerning the flow properties in fluid-solid mixtures and slurries. With this need for fundamental information in mind, the author made a study on the effect solids have on the friction factor in fluid-solid mixtures.

In this paper various percentages of fine and coarse sand …

Getting The Best From Your Sewing Machine, O. Evans Scott Jan 1961

Getting The Best From Your Sewing Machine, O. Evans Scott

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

"NEXT to the plough, this is perhaps humanity's most blessed instrument." (Louis Antoine Godey.)

In some homes the sewing machine is the most sadly neglected and ill-used servant. It is often left set up, exposed to dust, dampness and scratching, used as a table and otherwise abused.

It is not right to have a machine stitching imperfectly and noisily and used for long periods without maintenance when a little attention can keep it performing quietly and efficiently.

A New Type Of Seed Bed Cover For The Market Garden, R R. Bell, M. Hardie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ALL market gardeners use seed beds in their gardening programme. However, the basic design of seed beds and covers has not greatly altered over the years.

The availability of cheap good quality plastic materials has now shown the way to improvements in the design of this type of gardening equipment.

A Rational Approach To The Estimation Of Evaporation And Evapotranspiration From Climatological Data, Jerald Emmet Christiansen, B. B. Patil Jan 1961

A Rational Approach To The Estimation Of Evaporation And Evapotranspiration From Climatological Data, Jerald Emmet Christiansen, B. B. Patil

Reports

Many attempts have been made to derive mathematical expressions relating evaporation and evapotranspiration, or consumptive use, to climatological data. IN the United States, the Blaney-Criddle formula is probably the best known for estimating consumptive use (2 and 3). Blaney (1) has also suggested that this formula is suitable for estimating evaporation as measured with a Weather Bureau pan. Other well known formulas are the Penman formulas (10), the Thornthwaite formula (15) and the Hargreaves formulas (8). Halkias, Beihmeyer and Hendrickson (6) suggest that water requirements of crops can be determined from atmometer data. Lowry and Johnson (() in an early …

A Geophysical Investigation Of An Area In Christian County, Missouri, Edwin J. Ballantyne Jr. Jan 1961

A Geophysical Investigation Of An Area In Christian County, Missouri, Edwin J. Ballantyne Jr.

Masters Theses

"A vertical intensity magnetic survey of 144 square miles in Christian County, southwest Missouri revealed an 825 gamma anomaly having a closure of 9 square miles. A three mile gravity traverse across the magnetic anomaly detected a positive gravity anomaly in excess of six mllligals.

Calculations showed that a Precambrian hill large enough to cause the observed magnetic anomaly would outcrop at the surface. Because Precambrian rocks are known to be buried under a sedimentary layer, this hypothesis was rejected.

Theoretical anomalies of several geometrical bodies at calculated depths were visually compared with the measured magnetic and gravity profiles. A …

Effect Of Boundary Layer Control, Through Spiral Cuts, On The Film Coefficient Of Convective Heat Transfer, Nicholas W. Barre Jan 1961

Effect Of Boundary Layer Control, Through Spiral Cuts, On The Film Coefficient Of Convective Heat Transfer, Nicholas W. Barre

Masters Theses

"This thesis is experimental investigation into the possibility of obtaining an increase in the forced convection heat transfer coefficient for a pipe by passing the fluid through a narrow spiral cut in the pipe.

Different spiral pipes with pitches of two, four, eight, ten, sixteen, and twenty inches were used; however, the width of the spiral cut remained unchanged at 3/16 of an inch. Several mass flow rates for water were used up to a maximum of 1536 lbs/hr for each run.

One of the objectives was to find which pitch would give the highest heat transfer rate for a …

A Study Of The Transient State Of Transpiration Cooling, William C. Wolkenhauer Jan 1961

A Study Of The Transient State Of Transpiration Cooling, William C. Wolkenhauer

Masters Theses

"This thesis is a successful attempt to show a new approach to the transpiration cooling problem. Transpiration cooling has long been known as an effective way of removing heat from porous material.

It is shown here that transpiration cooling from a porous material, assuming a temperature difference between the coolant and the porous material, is less effective than where the coolant within the pores is assumed to be at the same temperature as the material adjacent to the pore. Previous investigators made the latter assumption.

The specific problem considered here is that of a uniform, porous plate with constant physical …

Preliminary Study Of An Optimum Vibration Absorber For A Multi-Mass System With Multiple Excitation, John Raymond Burrows Jan 1961

Preliminary Study Of An Optimum Vibration Absorber For A Multi-Mass System With Multiple Excitation, John Raymond Burrows

Masters Theses

"The object of this thesis is to demonstrate, by the use of a modern digital computer, a fast, efficient method to eliminate or minimize undesirable stress conditions in a multimass vibrating system with multiple excitation. The condition desired is obtained by the addition of an optimum tuned and damped dynamic vibration absorber, for one critical speed only.

Maximum stress is the criteria used for design here and not amplitude as has been used previously by all other authors.

This solution requires the applied torque to be reevaluated as an average torque and a number of half integer harmonics. This method …

The Analysis, Construction, And Calibration Of An Electronic Vibrations Amplifier, Jimmie D. Howard Jan 1961

The Analysis, Construction, And Calibration Of An Electronic Vibrations Amplifier, Jimmie D. Howard

Masters Theses

"Vibrations analysis necessitates having a device capable of performing some initial phase of detection. The vibration amplifier presented in this thesis performs such an initial aid to analysis by detecting amplitudes of vibrations of varying magnitudes and frequencies. This is accomplished by utilizing a Piezoelectric crystal vibration pickup to obtain an acceleration wave form. Two operational amplifiers perform integrations of the acceleration to obtain displacement. A calibrated meter within the device provides a method of determining magnitudes of displacement. Recording instruments such as the Brush recorder or an oscilloscope may also be used"--Abstract, page ii.

Isothermal Decomposition Of Austenite (In 1.4% Tungsten Steel) At Subcritical Temperatures, Samir Moustafa Riad Jan 1961

Isothermal Decomposition Of Austenite (In 1.4% Tungsten Steel) At Subcritical Temperatures, Samir Moustafa Riad

Masters Theses

"An experimental investigation was conducted in order to study the relationship between temperature, time and the decomposition of austenite in Tungsten steel of a given composition - and to plot the T-T-T Diagram for this steel.

The steel was prepared, homogenized and cut into identical specimens for further heat treatment and metallographic inspection. Precautions were taken to prevent these specimens from decarburizing during any heat treatment.

This experimental work may be divided into three main parts:-

I. Determination of the critical temperature range; i.e. the range of temperature Ae1 and Ae3 above which austenite is stable and below …
